    1. Merida Philips/Phillips NC>GA
    2. Does anyone on this list have any information about Merida Philips/Phillips b. ca. 1810 in NC? He married and had at least one son before moving to Cherokee county, GA. He is listed on the 1850 Cherokee County Census with wife, Sake (?) and 11 children. One of which was my great grandfather, Marshall b. ca. 1842. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Regina

    3. Donald, Sorry I wasn't clearer in my response. Milton County did lose some of their county records. However, records of the Court of Ordinary (now, Probate Court) and Superior Court from about 1867 through 1931 were microfilmed and are available at the Georgia Archives and the LDS Library in Salt Lake. These include wills, other estate records, marriages and deeds. It's my understanding that some of their original records were transferred to the Atlanta History Center. However, I believe Fulton County still has the originals of many of the records. Some of the clerks at the courthouse may not be aware they have the records as I think the records are off site at their records center and it takes a few days for them to get records from their records center. 3. Joan, are you referring to Federal Census records or county records? I knew that the census records had been microfilmed, but I was speaking about county land deeds, marriage, etc that were lost by Milton Co. I think it was the old WSB personality Aubrey Morris who had told me that story. There were a few at the Fulton Co. courthouse but there were a lot that were missing at one time. I live in NC and have for the past 38 years, but I still visit the Cherokee/Forsyth Co. area and have a lot of relatives there. Don Pruitt

    3. When you are looking from 1850 era in Cherokee Co, GA you need to realize that old Milton Co. was in existence from 1857-1931 when it went bankrupt and was taken in by Fulton Co. To add to our misery the wagon that hauled the county records from Alpharetta to Atlanta seemed to have gotten lost and where never found. There are a few incidental records at the Fulton Co. courthouse but you have to be fairly brave to go there even before the incident last year and now it would be more difficult to gain access. I found some things there in the late 1980's so it may be possible to do that. I had Pruitts and Rainwaters who settled around Hickory Flat around 1840 and they continued to go back and forth between old Milton and Cherokee Co. during the 1857-1885 period. Just thought some of you who are not familiar with the area need to be aware of this. Don Pruitt

Interestingly, the Brooks mentioned in it fit my time frame and my gg grandmother's name. It appears to me that the name of Brooks might be Thomas. Since we don't know my gg grandfather's first name, anything is possible. However, I think my Brooks name might be Doctor. That is all any of my family ever heard him called and they all thought he was a doctor. After researching many families in that time frame who for some reason named their kids with the given name of Doctor, I'm thinking that was probably the case with our Dr Brooks. He disappeared during the CW. His widow, Martha, said he went off to war and never came back. Many Thanks for sending this. Lou Ann

    1. Re: [GACHEROK-L] RE: Bates
    2. Geraldine, I was just looking at the census for 1880 Hickory Flat Cherokee Co. I am trying to pick up clues to my g grandmother's family. I noticed there were a large number of Bates living there. If you need a census look up I will do it for you. Also, I need some advice on my g grandmother. She was Frances E (Franny or Fanny) Wates born abt 1860 GA? She is on the 1880 census I mentioned above married to James W Webb born 1845 SC with the first child Laura J age 3. I cannot find a marriage record for them. I have their death records and Frances says her mother was Sarah father was Charlie and that she was born in TN. I have looked and looked and can't place her in a family with parents of these names. I am wondering if it would be a possibility that her name could have actually been BATES and not WATES. Her son O C Webb gave the info she was 79 when she died. Any ideas from anyone will be so greatly appreciated! I am stumped on this!!! thanks, Mary

    1. [GACHEROK-L] DOOLY
    2. Howdy I have one Dooley in my file but no dates or info on her. Wonder if anyone has info for me. Her name is Lily Elizabeth Dooley who married James Harvey Baldridge. their daughter Bonnie Mae Baldridge married Edwin M. Kisselburg in 1941. Any info out there? Jan Kisselburg Rebecca, Yes, we have corresponded briefly in the past on the Bannister line. They married into the Dooley/Dooly family in Forsyth Co. GA. Augustus Williams was a son of Jonathan Middleton Williams from Rutherford County, NC. Augustus and wife, Sarah Whitesides Ledbetter, moved with her family, Johnson Ledbetter, to Lumpkin County, GA about 1838. I have some, but very little, information on your connection, the Lawson family. I knew they connected, but I do not have much, other than knowing their was a connection. If your Williams from SC are connected to the family of Augustus Williams it would be a very distant cousin, and so far I have not found any connection between the NC and SC Williams families. Not that there is not a connection... just that I have not found it. Sorry I can't help there. I understand about all those county lines being so close and what county every thing is located in that corner of those adjoining counties is very confusing. I have been there, but that was years ago, and on our tour of cemeteries I never knew what road we were on, or what county we were in, because they are all so close to each other. Isn't Shiloh cemetery located in that small area where the counties join and not far from the Forsyth/Dawson county line, but over in Cherokee County? Do you know the road it is located on? Looking forward to hearing from you, Flora ----- Original Message ----- From: <rbannister@comcast.net> To: <GACHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 1:35 PM Subject: Re: [GACHEROK-L] Shiloh Methodist Cemetery -WILLIAMS, LEDBETTER & DOOLY > Flora, if I'm not mistaken, we have corresponded on the Dooley line. This area of Cherokee County has confused many a researcher, I assure you. I was raised there and I have to think twice sometimes. To completely research families there you have to cover four census districts -- Conns Creek in Cherokee County, Yellow Creek in Dawson, Dug Road in Pickens and Hightower in Forsyth. The church cemeteries are even more confusing -- in a five mile radius there are at least half a dozen possibilities -- Shiloh, Ophir, Mount Vernon, Lebanon, Yellow Creek, Mica, Conns Creek -- and I'm probably forgetting some. > > I have a (barely) working knowledge of many of the families in the area since they were either my family or collateral lines in some way. Amanda Myra Williams, daughter of Augustus married my 3rd great uncle, Sion Jacob Lawson. I have tried for years to determine the origin of that Williams family. I have a Williams line in the Pendleton District of South Carolina who moved to Cherokee County but I haven't found any connection between these two Williams families. I'm not at my personal computer to look up the census, but I think Augustus was living in the Conns Creek district in 1850. > > Can I give your email address to a Ledbetter researcher? 3. Hello Martha, Thank you for the information on both the Williams and the Ledbetters. I do not know of a connection to your Williams, but I will keep your information and if I find any connections I will contact you right away. On your husband's Ledbetters..... I feel sure there is a connection way back there. I need to get my Ledbetter information out and look at it again. My Ledbetter's were originally out of VA. I descend from Richard I, then Richard II and then Richard III, and his son, Johnson Ledbetter who ended up in Lumpkin County, GA. Do you have the book, "Ledbetters from VA"? I'm sure we can make the connection with the information in that book. My Richard Ledbetter III moved from VA to Rutherford Co. NC, then he moved to Lumpkin County with his son, Johnson and his family about 1838. Richard III is buried in Dawson County. He was reported to be 103 years old when he died. 2. Shiloh Church is in Cherokee County about a 1/4 from the Dawson county line. Do you remember Stancil's store on Yellow Creek Road? Shiloh Church Road is about a 1/2 mile south of the store. The Dawson county line is about another 1/4 mile or so from the Church. The road is called Shiloh Church Road at the intersection with Yellow Creek Road but it changes to Cowart Road after you cross into Dawson County. To give you perspective, to reach the Forsyth county line, you travel about another 1 mile south on Yellow Creek Road to Ophir Church (Old Federal Road) and turn east -- the Forysth County line is less than a 1/2 mile from the intersection. The Pickens county line is about 2 miles north of Stancil's store. (My mileage estimates are rough -- I'm really bad at estimating miles. I typically think of distances in terms of minutes. In these cases I've described -- you could literally travel through all four counties in the span of 10 minutes or less.) I have a bit of information on Amanda Myra Williams' descendants for two reasons -- Sion Jacob Lawson was part of my Lawson line and their son Augustus Lawson married my great-grandmother Ida Roper Bannister's sister, Elizabeth Roper. -------------- Original message -------------- > Rebecca, > > Yes, we have corresponded briefly in the past on the Bannister line. 2. Flora, if I'm not mistaken, we have corresponded on the Dooley line. Elizabeth Dooley Banister, daughter of James Dooley and Ruth Giley Anderson is my 3rd great-grandmother. First -- I am positive the cemetery you are seeking is Shiloh Methodist. If I'm remembering correctly, he's a descendant of Sarah Whiteside Ledbetter's brother. 1. Re: [GACHEROK-L] Shiloh Methodist Cemetery -WILLIAMS, LEDBETTER & DOOLY
    2. Martha Ledbetter
    3. Flora, My Williams family is as follows: Richard Williams, born 1781, married Lucy Bogas in 1803-04. His son Newton Keen Williams, born 1804 married Sarah Jones. Richard is from Surry Co., NC, and was a Quaker. He was disowned in 1804 for marrying contrary to the discipline. I find that they came from Blount County, TN, to Union County, GA. Newton and Sarah, his second wife then came to Cherokee County. They are both buried in Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery. Newton and his first wife, Jane Coope, had three sons and Newton and Sarah Jones had three sons. All six sons came with him to Georgia. They are as follows: Francis Marion, who eventually went to Lumpkin County, McKindre C., who went bact to TN, Lorenzy Licurgus remained in Cherokee County, Asbury Nelson went to old Milton County, GA, Dewitt Sanford went to Iuka, Mississippi, and William Penn went to Boaz, AL. Dewitt Sanford Williams is my great grandfather. He married Martha Jane Beard from Union and Cherokee County. It seems that the Beards, Williams and Gurleys moved together from Union County to Cherokee County. Since Richard was a Quaker, I can trace the family back to 1665, through the Quaker records. I find Joseph Williams, born 1665, in Baltimore, MD. As for the Ledbetter line, I married a Ledbetter from Mississippi. My maiden name is Williams. I have traced this line from MS to AL to Daniel Ledbetter born abt. 1792, in GA, and then to Joel born in SC, and then to Rev. Henry born 1721, in VA. If any of this helps, I will be glad to send more details. I'm sure there is bound to be some connection to these folks. 1. Re: [GACHEROK-L] Shiloh Methodist Cemetery -WILLIAMS, LEDBETTER & DOOLY
    2. Flora
    3. Rebecca, Yes, we have corresponded briefly in the past on the Bannister line. 3. Rebecca: My gr grandfather, Wm Samuel Puckett, had three siblings who married into the families of three of the surnames you listed that you are also researching. The eldest sister, Mary Ann Puckett, married Wm Lawrence Hogan, II, in Randolph Co. AL & lived in Haralson Co. GA. Another sister, the youngest, Mittie, married Peter E. Hembree. I don't know where they lived but I found Mittie & her in-laws in the 1880 Troup Co. census. Her husband wasn't listed in the h/h in that census. A brother, James Tillero Puckett married Eliza Clementine Duke in Cherokee Co. AL & they lived their lives in Upshur Co, TX. These Pucketts were the children of Andrew Jackson Puckett & Frances (Roberts) Puckett who married in 1837, Coweta Co. GA. There were other siblings too & they married Fuller, Grubbs & Duncan/Dunkin. Would you happen to have these folks in your records? The family lived in various counties in GA, AL & TX, including Cherokee Co. Thanks, Diane P. 3. Martha, I am searching for Augustus WILLIAMS, who married Sarah Whiteside LEDBETTER, daughter of Johnson LEDBETTER. I am also looking for a daughter of Augustus WILLIAMS, Sarah, who married Frank Fox DOOLEY/DOOLY. My information says Augustus WILLIAMS, his wife Sarah WILLIAMS, and their daughter Sarah DOOLEY and her husband, Frank Fox DOOLEY, are all buried at Shiloh Methodist Cemetery in Cherokee County, GA. I am related to the WILLIAMS family, the LEDBETTER family, and to the DOOLEY/DOOLY family in Cherokee Co., in Lumpkin Co., in Dawson Co., and in Forsyth Co., GA. I see your name is LEDBETTER. Perhaps we are working on the same line of WILLIAMS and LEDBETTER. Would love to hear from you on your lines and exchange information.
