My gr grandfather was John C. Rice. My Aunt did the paperwork, but I had to provide her with the Pension Application and the information from the National Archives. The Pension Application was not done in Cherokee Co, but in AR, where he lived until he died in 1937. I found out about the War Monument through someone who belonged to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. If you contact the local chapter in the County where you have an ancestor buried, I am sure they will help you get started.
My guess is Cobb County as well. Acworth's current-day zip codes extend into Paulding and Cherokee and maybe Bartow counties, but I doubt the area considered to be Acworth in the late 1800s extended beyond Cobb's borders. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ivaleine Kay Cooper" <ikcooper@pacbell.net> To: <GACHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 10:51 PM Subject: Re: [GACHEROK-L] Civil War Monuments > If you contact a local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in the > county where you think your ancestor is buried, they may be able to help > you. Daniel does not appear in a comprehensive survey of Cherokee County burials completed about 1997. Since he lived in Acworth, it is quite likely that he was buried in Cobb County. You might try posting a query on that message board. I'm not aware of any particular organization that placed Civil War monuments on veteran's graves at the time of his death, although the United Confederate Veterans organization was very active in the Atlanta area. If the monument was placed well after his death, the Veterans Administration has a program under which it provides, free of charge, brass tablets or marble tombstones for Civil War veterans whose burial sites are known but whose graves were not previously marked. This program has been abused in some cases, because I've seen both family purchased older markers and the newer VA ones on the same graves. W. Acworth is in Northern Cobb county. Near Bartow and Cherokee county lines.
Tracey, I believe that current day Acworth is in Bartow County. Probably one place to find where he is buried is the 7 volume ed. by Lillian Henderson on the Compiled Records of Cofederate Veterans from Georgia. Since he survived the war, it may list where he was buried. I am not aware of any records on placement of markers for CSA Veterans. It was usually a family thing. It would help to know which Company and Regiment he was in. Once you know that then go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/military/civilwar/34th.htm and you can find that info for him from the Henderson works. It is pivotal to know which Regiment and Co, for instance GA 38th Infantry, CoB. Good luck. Hi to All, Who do you contact to find out if a Civil War monument was placed on a grave? I know this is a weird request, but my aunt feels that our ancestor, Daniel Bennett, had this type of monument placed on his grave. He served in the Civil War. He died 2/5/1889 based on the pension papers. We are unsure where he is buried, but his last residence was Acworth, Cobb County, GA (1895). We are hoping to find out whoever places Civil War monuments on graves, will maybe have his burial info. Thanks for any leads, Tracey Nichols Fearless Leader of Cadette and Senior Troop 625
If you contact a local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in the county where you think your ancestor is buried, they may be able to help you. There is paperwork that a family has to fill out on a veteran who does not have a Civil War Monument. The Department of the Army will place them if you know where the veteran is buried. Someone in one of these departments should have the application, if it was filled out. My Aunt filled one out for our ancestor. The Sons of the Confederacy actually did a ceremony to place the stone. Our ancestor was from Cherokee Co, but he drew his Veterans benefits in AR and is buried there.

There were a couple of well known Kelly families in Forsyth County. Not sure about Ellis surname. I was raised in Forsyth Co. Not sure if there is a rootsweb page. If so, it is not very active. There is an historical society and while it is not really genealogically driven, the officers might be able to lead you to someone. Donnie Shadburn lives in Forsyth Co, but sometime he can be difficult to reach. Forsyth was created in 1832 and the county seat is Cumming, GA. Might want to go to Forsyth Co, GA website and/or do search engine on names and Forsyth Co, GA. Jan, I descend from the Levi Rainwater b ca 1780 (NC) hence to Gabriel Rainwater b 1805(SC) hence to Susannah Elizabeth Rainwater b 1832 (SC). I note in some of my old papers that there was a Matthew Rainwater b ca 1790 and eventually migrated to Richmond Co., NC. Do not have records of you Beatman or whether that Michael could be the same one but appears too long a gap there. There is a Rainwater page on rootsweb. It is not very active now, but the Rainwater line has been extensively researched going back into the early part of the 20th century. There is a lot of contentous arguments about some of the research most stemming back to what is known as the Folmar Chart. There is a lady named Susan Chance Rainwater who has a rather large website. Just put her name in a search engine and you should be able to get to the site. The rootsweb board is RAINWATER-L@rootsweb.com Hope this helps. You do not indicate where you come from or where these ancestors were. Sometimes that can provide a lead. Sorry that I can not be more help.
