Roll call? I am searching for info on the Dobbs, Dabbs, and McKinney families of Cherokee and Cobb. Also as a side line the Gregory family. Cate Chapman
Roll Call, I am looking for information on two Wood families (kin?) 1. Randolph and wife Elizabeth Wood (parents of my great grandfather Richard Wood). and 2.William Wood, wives Nancy Riggins, Rhoda and Elizabeth Norwood. William and Elizabeth Wood and family were in 1850 Cherokee Co, GA Census. William Wood's sons Jesse Green Wood and John Bibb Wood were in 1860 census in Marion County, AL. William was killed by one of his other sons in 1857 in Cherokee Co, GA. I've still got some unanswered questions about my Cherokee County ancestors. I've gotten good results from earlier posts and a lot of folks have provided valuable clues. If the list administrator is willing to allow it, perhaps now is a good time to do a "roll call." Ask everyone reading the board to write up their "wish list" of ancestors they are researching and the information they are looking for about them. I've seen a roll call really rejuvenate a site. What about it, list administrator? W. Hello, I'm looking for any information or anyone else who is researching Samuel Howard. I know that he obtained land in Muscogee during the 1827 Land Lottery. I believe he was in Jasper County at the time. According to recently discovered estate records, I have found that he had land in Muscogee, Marion, Decatur and Cherokee Counties. After his death (abt. September 1843), the majority of his family moved to Meriwether County. I would greatly appreciate any information anyone might have of Samuel or his family (listed below). Thanks so much! In my county/town there is a Veterans Service Officer. He assists families with veterans' services which includes assisting in submitting application for grave markers, if needed. These officers have access to VA records that the general public doesn't have. If there is one in your county (or the county where the marker was placed) he/she may be able to help find out the location, and possibly the information which was submitted on the form. bekkac, I sent an email to you; however, mindspring bounced my reply back. You would need to clear my email address before I can send the info on Claytons in Cherokee Co, GA. Regards, Don Pruitt
-- Veterans Administration takes care of the markers - a family member actually does the requesting and paperwork, etc. Go to VA website and -- Select Markers -- That's for all wars. You can also look at the national cemeteries online if they are buried in a National Cemetery. Hope this helps. I am thinking that Alfred M. is Alexander's brother...there is also a Powell...think they are all brothers. Alfred M. was captured and later joined the North...I have his confederate records, but not his northern ones yet. Alexander and Powell were both killed. I have both their Confederate records. Alexander died at Culpepper Courthouse and Powell died at Fairfax Courthouse. What I don't have is a burial place for any of them.
Looked in the records and found an Alfred M. Colbert who initially enlisted in GA 20th, Co F on July 6, 1861. Transferred to GA 28th, Co F in 1862. Does not list death for this person. Did not find an Alexander Colbert for Cherokee County. It really depends on a number of factors surrounding their deaths. If they died of disease or wounds, they could have been buried at the site of their death or the family could have claimed their body. If they died in a prison camp, they were probably buried there. The good news, if there can be any good news, about their death in a northern prison camp is that most of the cemeteries have been designated national cemeteries and the database of burials is on-line at the following web site: http://www.cem.va.gov/hm.htm Most soldiers who were captured in the early months of the war were only imprisoned for a short time until they could be exchanged. Later in the war the infamous camps like Fort Delaware and Rock Island started to fill up in the north, like Andersonville did in the south. -------------- Original message -------------- From: PogosBill@aol.com > I have two soilders from Cherokee County that died within six months of > joining the Civil War. Alexander Colbert joined in Cherokee County...was sent to VA with the 20th GA Infantry. He died within six months of joining at the Culpepper Courthouse in VA. It had been turned into a troup hospital. He died of Typhoid. This was in 1861 and I doubt his widow had the money to bring him home. I guess they just buried them in a field nearby. Just was wondering if any markers were around to show where they were buried....typhoid took so many lives, I am sure it was among many others who died there.
I have two soilders from Cherokee County that died within six months of joining the Civil War. They died in Virginia. Would they have been buried there? Is there some way to find where they were buried?

Hi If your ancestor was from either Cobb or Cherokee county, it is likely that he was part of the 40th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd or 52nd Infantry Regiments under Generals Barton and Stovall, often referred to as Stovall's Brigade. There is an association of descendants of these regiments that is quite active. It is called General Barton and Stovall's History-Heritage Association. The website is www.generalbartonandstovall.com. There is tons of information on the website and Gary Goodson and others in the club are very helpful in research. My grandfather and his brother were part of the Ga 41st and they are buried at Sixes and Enon Cemetaries in Woodstock. They both have markers, but I'm not sure when or how the markers were placed there. Good luck in your search. I was wondering if a person needs to get the actual Civil War records from the National Archives to have a monument placed on a grave of an ancestor? I have James W Webb who I have found records on but do not have the ones from the National Archives. Since he was my great grandfather I would love to have a monument placed on his grave. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Mary
Do you know what proof the family has to have of the man's service?? I've found a marker in one of my lines for a grandpa for whom I can find no service record. Is it possible the family put it on there with no proof????????
