Need help with GGGGgrandmother, Mary Y. Standridge 9/1799 born Indian Territy GA. any help???? Carol
My great grandfather was born in Cherokee County. His name was John Calvin Rice. His exact age has been a controversy within the family. He claimed to be only 16 when he entered the Civil War (Co. I, 36th GA Regiment, GA Volunteer Infantry,) but he enlisted as being at least 10 years older than this. In several census records, his birth year is listed as 1843 or 44. This would have been more accurate for being 16 at the time he enlisted. In his pension records, he does not give a year of birth, but his birth year would have been about 1830 or 32, from his statements about his age. His first wife was Martha Kelly/Kelley. I believe John Calvin is the son of Humphrey Posey Rice and Leviny Kuykendall Rice. They had a son John C, born abt 1844. I have been in touch with other descendants of Humphrey and Leviny. We all agree that my John C is probably their son. John Calvin's first 3 children were born in Cherokee Co. In 1880 they are listed in the Murray Co census. Martha and John moved just north of Little Rock, AR by the 1880's. Martha died 1882 and is buried in the Mount Pisgah Cemetery, on what is now Camp Robinson Property in North Little Rock. (There were a couple of Kelley's that mustered into the CSA on the same day as John Calvin.) John married again after Martha died, but had no children that lived to adulthood by his second wife. He married a third time to my great grandmother, Eliza Jane Price Smith. John Calvin died in April 1937 in Stone Co, AR. I am trying to get a Rice family member to consent to the DNA testing to prove that he is related to the Humphrey Posey line. Kay Cooper, Atwater, CA Researching (Cooper, Norman, Coggin, Holleman for paternal lines; Tyler, Rice, Holliman, Jackson, Price, Kuykendall for maternal lines.)
I hope someone can assist me establishing a relationship between Joshua C. ELLIS & William ELLIS. William ELLIS purchased forty acres more or less land in the third district second section of Cherokee County #624 in Aug 1841. The copy of the record is difficult to read, but the name Richard also appears in the record and it appears the land had been granted to Ruben Simmons. My GG-Grandfather was Joshua C ELLIS., who is listed in the 1840 Census or Cherokee County. Also listed in the 1840 Cherokee County Census is a William ELLIS with one male of an age to possibly be Joshua'a father. Joshua C Ellis is listed in the 1850 Census of Forsyth County. He moved to Arkansas in the late 1850's along with his fatther-in-law Hiram Kelly, and brother-in-laws Joseph & Jesse Kelly and their families. My DREAM is to find some document to establish kinship between Joshua & William. Joshua named his first born son William, and Joshua's son Joshua named his first born son William. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Jonelle ELLIS Russell email: ljrussell@earthlink.net
Theron Monroe GAGE (1880-1942) who married Della SAMPLES 5 Feb 1909 was son of Alonzo M and Laura (MONROE) GAGE. Theron and Laura were also parents of D. Harrison Gage born 1878 and Homer Gordon Gage born 1889. When the 1880 Census of Hightower, Forsyth County GA was recorded, Laura MONROE Gage's 62 year old mother Mary KELLY Monroe was residing in the Hightower, Fortsyth County GA home of Laura & Alonzo GAGE and sons Homer Gordon & D. Harrison. The Gages named their third child for Laura's father Theron Monroe GAGE. It is believed that Theron Monroe was born 11 Jul 1814 in Spartanburg, SC. He died 8 Apr 1878 and is buried at Diana's Chapel, Scudder's Cemetery in Forsyth County. I am attempting to document the heritage of Theron Monroe. Mary Kelly's sister married Thomas MONROE son of Jesse & Martha Monroe. Considering the age and birth state, it is possible that Theron & Jesse Monroe were brothers. There is also speculation that they are related to Daniel Patrick Monroe of Dawson County. Jesse Monroe, his two wives, some grandchildren and I believe his son Perry are buried in the Monroe Family Cemetery in Pickens County. Census data indicates some of the Monroes were born in South Carolina. My research has not produced evidence to establish the relationship, if any between these Monroe Families. I hope that somewhere there is a family Bible containing birth and marriage data providing documentation of the various relationships. All suggestions and adivice is welcome. Sincerely, Jonelle Ellis Russell, ggg-grandaughter of Hiram & Elizabeth (McGEE) Kelly email: ljrussell@earthlink.net

The legend about Ballground does have a sort of sports connection. Supposedly the Creek or Cherokee Indians used that area to participate in an athletic event that resembled lacrosse. My g-gf (Fletcher Lowery, b 1849; died 1902) was born there and very possibly is buried in a cemetery in that area. Nancy, I can remember as a child hearing my Dad talk of the times when his uncle would take him to Ballgtround. At the time, I thought it was a sports facility. Only after I was grown I found that it was a town. My Grandmother Rebecca was a Carnes before marrying my Grandfather. The Carnes' have done a pretty good job of keeping track of their heritage; the Price's never took that much interest in genealogy. I am currently working in Florida, so not much chance of moving soon. I had entertained the idea of possibly moving to Georgia after I retire so I could be closer to my "roots" and learn more about my heritage. If I do, it will probably not be all the way to Cherokee County, but close enough for a comfortable drive. Grandchildren are also a powerful force and I have three of them within a few miles. I wouldn't want to move so far north that I couldn't get in the car one day and "go see the kids". Perhaps somewhere in between. Thanks, John John M. Thanks Rita, It's ok if you answer. The Price family is connected through Rebecca Neville who married William A. Price I believe. I recieved most of my information about this side of my family from "The History of Rabun County" and the rest came from the Guion Miller apps the Beck's and Prices filled out. Wm A Beck named his half brothers and sisters (Coffee) in the application. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/plaintext.html for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff ------=_NextPart_000_00B3_01C65423.01294BF0 Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="Re_ [GACHEROK-L] Roll Call Claytons.eml" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Re_ [GACHEROK-L] Roll Call Claytons.eml" From: "bekkac" <bekkac@mindspring.com> To: <GACHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> References: <001a01c652c0$4b9ac330$284ca70c@oemcomputer> Subject: Re: [GACHEROK-L] Roll Call Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2006 19:26:42 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180 Roll Call for the CLAYTONS, Looking for the death dates and burial place for Levi Ranson Clayton who married Nancy Ann (Henson) .
