    3. There was no obituary with either of these names, but there was one possibility: November 7, 1913: Mrs. L.C. Rice died at her home in Powder Springs last Thursday. Her remains were interred in Fields Chapel cemetery Saturday. She is survived by a husband and one daughter. (Victoria Correspondence; Page 1, col 3 and 4). Died October 30, 1913. Age 60 years on tombstone. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ivaleine Kay Cooper" <ikcooper@pacbell.net> To: <gacherok@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 17, 2006 10:00 AM Subject: Re: [GACHEROK] Obits >I would be interested in an obituary for Humphrey Posey Rice or his wife, > Leviny Kuykendall Rice. 3. The license is taken out in the county the bride is from. This isn't always true---my grandmother's license came from my grandfather's county. But his father was the JP that married them, so I feel sure they pulled a few strings. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Ginafaith@aol.com> To: <gacherok@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 12, 2006 11:03 AM Subject: Re: [GACHEROK] Early Georgia Marriages > Don, I'm not sure about Cherokee county, but if they have them on file, > like > some courthouses, the application for a license is what you need. 2. Don, I'm not sure about Cherokee county, but if they have them on file, like some courthouses, the application for a license is what you need. It has all kinds of information on it, including parents names (sometimes) if the bride or groom were underage. Very few courthouses have these back that early and if they did have them then, lots were burned when Sherman marched through. You might give the courthouse a call and ask them if they have any old applications. Also, I'm thinking that the license is given in the county that the couple actually planned on getting married in. Anyone else know any differently? Regina

The lower part had the same names and the name of the person who actually performed the ceremony. 3. Lainee, I don't know if this will be helpful, or not - but my ancestor was James Craig who married Susan Hopgood on September 11, 1845 in Cherokee County. Your Ann Craig was married to Elisha Wittamore on March 6, 1849. Their marriage was in the Cherokee County marriage book B. Unfortunately, parents are not recorded in the early marriage records. The only other Craig in Cherokee County during that time frame was a William Craig who was of an age to be the brother of James. I wonder if the three are siblings? My James Craig listed his place of birth on one census as NC on another as SC. The marriage record is the first I have of him. He spent his life in the Sallacoa Valley area where Cherokee, Pickens and Bartow Counties merge. He moved a bit and was in the Cherokee and Bartow Census. For the 1860 census, he and Susan are listed in one part of Cherokee county and due to an error possibly with the filming, his children are on another page in another part of the county. Errors did happen, so maybe Anne was just overlooked in the 1850 census. 3. Carole, Thanks so much for your quick response! I don't know how much help I can be...but every census record I have on Annie is that she was born in NC...the only one I can't find her on is the 1850 a year AFTER she married Elisha, one suggestion being that she was the person giving the info and another that she was possibly indian and hid from the feds? 1840 and 1850 census has Elisha in Cherokee County, 1860 Sharp Mountain District of Pickens County, 1870 and 1880 put Elisha in the Yellow Creek District of Dawson County. Annie died 1873 in Alcorn County, Mississippi...but Elisha and children are still in Dawson County: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Notes from Families of Alcorn County by Margaret Vanstory. Elisha T. Whittemore was born about 1815, in South Carolina. It is not known when he moved to Georgia, but he was living in Cherokee County, Georgia in 1850. His first wife's maiden name was Coward. Children from this union were James, born about 1844; Emaline, born September 25, 1844, Lafayette, born about 1846; and Martha, born about 1848. His second wife was Annie Craige, who he married March 6, 1849. Children from this union were Julia A., born about 1856; Sarah A. 'Sally,' born March 1857; and William R., born December 15, 1860. It is not known whether Elisha died in Georgia or Mississippi. Part of the family moved to Alcorn County, Mississippi between 1870 and 1872. Annie died December 28, 1873, and is buried in the Sardis Cemetery, Emaline, Julia Ann, Sarah and William settled in Alcorn County, Mississippi. Julia A. Married Andrew W. Yarber about 1871. Their children were Eliza A., born about 1872, Paralee, born about 1875; and Charley A., born about 1878. They many have had other children. It is believed that Julia Ann and Andrew Yarber moved to Texas. Sara A. Whittemore married albert Garney Toller on October 29, 1878, in Alcorn County, Mississippi. Theri children were Annie C. Born August 1879; James N., born January 1888; Julia L., born June 1890; Ethel born Jluy 1894; and William, born 1899. Sarah is buried at Sardis Cemetery in Alcorn County, Mississippi, but has no marker. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am willing to bet that they were siblings! Just a matter of proving it! Annie and Elisha didn't name any children James but they do have a William. Daughter Sarah named one of her sons James...not that any of this means much! LOL I am just at a loss where to go from here! 3. Lainee, If they married in Cherokee County in 1849, the record would have remained in Cherokee even after the formation from Cherokee of later counties. Have you requested a copy from the court clerk there? Some of Georgia's early license forms requested the name of one or both parents, but not all. Someone else on the list will probably be able to tell you if the one used in 1849 did, but I can't recall. She doesn't appear in the 1850 census anywhere....certainly not in her husband's home. The only ones there are Elisha and his three children from previous marriage: 1850 Cherokee County, GA Census E.T. Whitmore 32 M Farmer 300 South Carolina James N. 6 M GA Nancy A. 4 F GA Lafayette 2 M GA I further understand that the area of Cherokee County that they were married in could have been the part of the county that later became Pickens (formed 1853 from Cherokee and Gilmer)because in the 1860 Elisha and Annie are living in the Sharp Mountain District of Pickens County and not sure but I guess the bond could be there: 1860 Sharp Mountain District, Pickens County, Georgia Census Elisha Whitemore 45 M Farmer 300 150 SC Ann 40 F NC James 16 M GA Lafayette 14 M GA Martha 12 F GA Julia A. 4 F GA Sarah 2 F GA Permelinda 65 F NC And then in 1870 they are living in the Yellow Creek area of Dawson County: 1870 Dawsonville Post Office, Yellow Creek, Dawson County, Georgia Census Elisha Whittemore 51 M W Farmer 100 100 GA Anna 46 F W Keeping House NC Julia Ann 14 F W At home GA Sarah 13 F W At home GA William 8 M W GA Thanks in advance for any and all information on the Craiges, Lainee Denton-Jones
