Betty, Did you get any info on your Hammond? My great grandparents were also from Chattooga county. Their names were Miles R and Catherine (Curry) Hammond. He was born in 1823 and died in 1902 and was in the construction business. I read an article that said he was exempt from the civil war because of his interest in milling.
