Michelle: Let me know what you find concerning the township of Melville. I was told that Melville was re-named Lyerly, post some military campaign (Civil War?) and was named for a military officer, Lyerly. I'm not certain if the township was the present Lyerly, or if it was the area which lies south of the Mosteller Creek crossing, on GA-114. I suspect that Chattooga County Historical Society Archives contain the answers. Will re-associate with them when schedule permits... Did you determine locale of Foster's Store, mill, tannery, et al? We just returned from family re-union with my brother and sis-in-law (Naval Commanders, from the D.C. area), in Helen, GA. Photos are on www.cartogra.com . Prior to our trip, I found a fellow in PA who deals in heart-pine. I intend to strive to determine market value of the available resources. When I screened his site, I found that he gets upwards of $16.00 / S.F. for resurfaced heart-pine and goodness only knows what he pays for the incoming material. Stay in touch. Were your Dovers connected to Simpson Dover by any chance? Simpson and his family appeared in 1830 Habersham Co., GA Census. By 1840 census they had moved to Walker Co., GA (now Catoosa County) to an area called the Dogwood Valley near Ringgold. 1850 Walker Co. Martin Camp, Simpson Dover, Thomas Bryant, Henry Martin, and perhaps one or two others who had married his daughters came with him. He had a single daughter, Miss Nancy. James Martin came to the county in 1834 and married her. In 1836 Dooley and his two sons and Henry and James Martin moved to Arkansas. In 1838 they moved back. About two years after they moved back James Martin and the Doolys moved to Alabama." Pat
Searching for parents of Brittian Jones of NC. married Pamelia Ann Hill on 12-26-1839. She was b.Greenville, SC. No record of her parents. Brittian and Pamelia lived in Laurens Co. SC, then came to GA, maybe to Peach Co. and their son Joel Hill Jones settled in Chattooga Co. and married Tennessee Filmore Anderson. Also searching for Tennessee's parent's names. Believe they came from NC. Children of Brittian and Pamelia were: James Alexander Jones, Martha Ann Jones, Susannah Martrulia Jones, John Warren Jones, Benjamin Franklin Jones, William Edward Jones, Isaac Thomas Jones, Joel Hill Jones (my line), Mary Jane Jones, Isaac Green Jones, Mary Elizabeth Jones. Any help finding parents names appreciated.
I have read, for several weeks, the interest in Chattooga Co, GA. I research the Samuel Shipman/Martha Sparks families who lived in Lyerly 1885 through 1910. Samuel lived in the area previously at Racoon Mills village (around 1855-60). Was this the site of a former Indian emcampment? Will share any data I have on Shipman or Sparks. Martha
There is a 6 page section on the history of Raccoon Mills in Bob Baker's Chattooga: The Story of a So & It's People. The book can be obtained through inter-library loan. Yes, it has an indian heritage. Michelle
