Dr. Allen Jefferson AUSTIN and Dr. Laban Turk AUSTIN, Sr. would have most likely attended medical school in GA between 1820 and 1870. Does anyone know what medical schools were in existence in GA during those years? Thanks for your help. Bob
Andrew Jasper Austin, born in Pike Co. supposedly joined the AL Company F, 39 Inf ,CSA at Phenix City, AL and was later wounded. Can any one tell me where I can find some history on this unit? After the war he married Mary A. E. Pollard in Muscogee or Chattahoochee Co, GA. He then lived in Troy, Pike, AL. I would also appreciate any info on the marriage date and place as well as any info on Mary Pollard and her family. Thanks Bob
Can anyone lookup for me a marriage between Virgil L. BURGAN and Maudie Bernice (maiden name--BONNNER) STRICKLAND. Dates should be September 13, 1954. Thanks, S Grondin sgrondin@mindspring.com
Greetings List Members, I am interested in the family of William A. AUSTIN, b. 1776, SC and Laban Turk (Labon, Labourn, L. T.) AUSTIN, (my gggf) b. GA cir 1802. If he is the son of W. A., as I suspect, he was probably born in Colombia Co. Wm. A. is known to have lived in these GA counties, in succession, as the land opened up: Columbia, Hancock, Baldwin, Jones, Muscogee, and Chattahoochee. It is believed that he also lived in Crawford County, as Laban Turk married there in Jan 1824. Wm. A.'s oldest son, Allen Jefferson, got married in Crawford Co. about two years later, Dec 1825. About 1827-30 Laban Turk moved to Pike Co., AL and Wm. A. moved to Muscogee Co., GA. There is known later interaction between the two families and there is commonality in given names between the two families. I am trying to verify the relationship of Laban Turk and Wm. A. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I plan to make a camping trip to all counties starting in April 2001. I would appreciate any suggestions on the sources , in addition to court houses, the sources of local records available; genealogy libraries, news papers, etc. Thanks, Bob Austin Huntsville, AL.
The Reeses and Deans were in Muscogee Co in the 1850 census. By 1860 the area where they lived was part of Chattahouchee Co. After the CW most of those still living went to Texas. Reese Genealogy 1. We are entirely too quiet - let's have a ROLL CALL!! Please send in the name of your ANCESTOR who lived in the county in the subject line of a post to this list. In the body of the post, please tell what you know about that ancestor, including as much info as you have about his line. If you had more than one ancestor living in this county, please send in separate posts for each! Carol C-H <cch@netdoor.com> http://www2.netdoor.com/~cch/
My g2gfather, Wiley Jackson CANNON, was b. February 18, 1817 in NC. On September 30, 1835, he m. Anna Moriah KING, in Talbot County, GA. On February 08, 1859, in Muscogee county, GA, he m. Harriet Elizabeth BROWNING. On August 13, 1861, in Chattahoochee county, GA, my ggmother, Elizabeth CANNON, was born. When/where did Anna die? How many children did she and Wiley have? There was one daughter in the household several years older than Elizabeth - was she Anna's daughter, or Harriet's by a prior marriage? I can find nothing solid about Harriet prior to her marriage to Wiley, so am totally in the dark as to the parentage of this other child. Any assistance would be much appreciated - obviously Harriet is one of my brick walls, but I would also like to fill in some gaps about Anna, and the child. Carol C-H <cch@netdoor.com> http://www2.netdoor.com/~cch/
My grandmother told me her mother was "part Indian". My grandmother's mother was Elizabeth CANNON, d/o Wiley Jackson CANNON and Harriet Elizabeth BROWNING. Elizabeth CANNON married Joseph Wiley JORDAN. Because other relatives in the line told me the Native American ancestor was in that JORDAN line, I have been digging there - to no avail so far, in that the lines I have been able to find and trace go back from west-central GA to early VA (CREEL, DODSON, WHITE, COCKERHAM, etc.). Joseph Wiley JORDAN's father, Thomas S. JORDAN, is one of my three brick wall g2gparents, though, so I was assuming the NA was in his line. Tonight, as I was thinking about my grandmother, who died in 1989 at age 102, I clearly heard her say, as she said to me so many times, that her _mother_ was "part Indian". When I questioned her about it, she would never get specific, and seemed to get very defensive, but did imply that one of her mother's parents was Native American. Her mother's father, Wiley Jackson CANNON, was s/o Jackson and Elizabeth CANNON , who came from NC. Her mother's mother was Harriet Elizabeth BROWNING, b. 1828. I know nothing about Harriet's birth family - she is another of my three brick wall g2gparents. Perry BROWNING who is listed in the census for the area has a daughter about that age who was listed as Elizabeth on the census, and I am currently trying to see if this could be my Harriet Elizabeth. Wiley Jackson CANNON and Harriet Elizabeth BROWNING were married in 1859 in Muscogee county. Their first child, my ggrandmother Elizabeth. was b. 1861 in Chattahoochee county. Wiley Jackson CANNON is listed on church rolls and such, but I find no listing for Harriet. Wiley and Harriet and their four children, all of whom were b. in Chattahoochee county, moved in the 1870s to Tallapoosa county, AL, where Harriet died in 1878. Is anyone researching a BROWNING line in the area? Guidance, connection, assistance, information or any other form of help would be much appreciated! On page 174 of "Lincoln County Georgia -Early Marrages", it shows Harrison THOMAS married Sarah E. House (lic) May 3, 1843. I could never figure the Lincoln county connection. In a "History of Chattachoochee County, GA", ....Harrison THOMAS, a native of Virginia, and resident of Upson Co. GA....(Virginia and Upson Co. both are dead ends). This may help you---On page 325 in the book "30,638 Burials in Georgia" it shows HOUSE, Mariah b.6-14-1802 d.1-8-1860 Ft. Benning, Muscogee County. Page 326 of the same book shows HOUSE, William (the father??) b.4-22-1796 d.9-6-1859, Ft. Benning, Muscogee County

Also, Lincoln county was once part of Wilkes, and I have that Mary was born in Lincoln County. Happy Hunting! This is a dead-end for me, too.

Posted on: Chattahoochee County GaGenWeb Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Chattahoochee/298 Surname: House, Thomas ------------------------- Per N.K. Rogers "History of Chattahoochee County, Georgia", published 1933, page 344, 345: William and Mariah HOUSE had 2 dau: (1) Mary E. (b 25 Apr 1821, d 8 Mar 1897) md Nimrod Nelson HOWARD (b 10 Dec 1817, d 14 Jan 1884); and (2) "Evaline who m. Harrison Thomas, a native of Virginia, and resident of Upson Co. Ga. in 1827 when he had a draw in that land lottery. Harrison and Evaline House Thomas had only one dau. who d. young at their home near Cusseta. They reared five sons viz: Malcolm, m. Lucy Stokes; Alvah m. Clara Watkins; Charles, Lafayette and R. K. Thomas." Per Rogers page 275, when Alvah D. THOMAS md Clara WADKINS 4 Dec 1878, the marriage was performed by J. O. A. COOK, a Minister of Gospel. There's always the slight possibility that it was the same church that the Thomas's attended and that the grave could be in that church's cemetery. Page 382 has extract of will for William HOUSE, dated 13 May 1858, probated October term 1859. Mentions wife Mariah, daughters Mary Elizabeth HOWARD, Sarah Evaline THOMAS. Executers sons-in-law Nimrod HOWARD and Harrison THOMAS. Is all of this old news, or does some of it help?
Hi John: I descend from Nancy Cobb born about 1837 in Houston Co, GA, according to the 1850 Chattahoochee Co, Ga census. She had a brother Benjamin Cobb listed with her. They were residing in the household of a cousin. I suspect Nancy and Benjamin were children of James M Cobb, also on the Chattahoochee Co census of 1850. There are several James M Cobbs in the county. This one supposedly was born about 1797 in Georgia. His first wife (I do not know her name) was the mother of Nancy and Benjamin. After here death, James M married a McNaughton/McNorton who died in 1849. There were children from the second marriage, too. Nancy married in 1855 in Chattahoochee Co to Samuel K Howell, son of Bryant D Howell and Mary his wife. Samuel died in the Civil War. You also mention Bagley. I descend from the Bagleys of North Carolina. My Bagleys came to Franklin Co, Georgia in the 18-0's. After the father died the adult children moved on to Forsyth and Gwinnett Co, GA. I do not know the lineage of the Bagley in Chattahoochee. I suspect he is related to mine in NC and Eastern Georgia. MIC Mic Barnette writes a genealogy column in the Houston Chronicle.
