To all of you who use MSWord doc files: I had my first encounter with a real live virus, W97M/ColdApe, yesterday. I copied a doc file from one of our church PC's and started to download it to my home PC. My McAfee Virus Scanner immediately detected a virus in the file and allowed me to delete it from the diskette. I then took my McAfee install CD to church, installed it on both PC's, and discovered that over half our many doc files were infected and had to be deleted, including MSWord's critical normal.doc file. We now face a lengthy and tedious rebuilding process as even our latest backups of theses files are tainted. There are numerous web pages describing the virus and its effects. One of them says: ". . . infects documents when they are closed. The virus uses a new method of replicating: instead of using traditional methods of copying it's macros around, it uses a new technique called "AddFromString". This made the virus undetectable by several heuristic scanners. " Please be careful in downloading doc files from diskette and the internet. Please, if you don't have a good Virus detecting program, get one and install it. Jerry B.
