At the GA Hist. Society there are indexes to Savannah newspapers. The ones covering the 1800s have a "Surnames" section that is just perfect for finding your folks. Toward the beginning of the 1900s, the indexes drop the "Surnames" section. The GHS also has the newspapers on microfilm as does the Public Library.
