    1. [GACHATHAM] Savannah Deserters
    2. Savannah Morning News 12 January 1863 The following named men are published as deserters from the Battalion Savannah Volunteer Guards, etc. 1. Bryan P.Basset : from Company A; enlisted as substitute for W.C.Mitchell, September 2. 1862; 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 1/2 inches in height, dark complexion, blue eyes, black hair; born in Charleston, So.Ca, and by occupation when enlisted a machinist. He deserted December 8, 1862, and is supposed to be now in Augusta, Georgia. He usually wears spectacles. He has lost three fingers from his left hand, and is frequently called "Jack." 2. John Makin :from Company A; enlisted March 18, 1862, for the war; 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 1/2 inches in height, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark hair; born in Ireland, and by occupation when enlisted a baker. Makin has a slight stoop and seems older than stated in the description. He has a wife in Savannah. 3. J.G.McGruder from Company B; enlisted on 17th March, for the war; 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 1/2 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair; born in Columbus county, Georgia, and formerly belonged to the 1st Georgia Regulars. He is supposed to have gone up the country. He has recently been calling himself "John King" in Savannah. 4. M. O'Connor from Company C; enlisted April 12th, 1862, for the war, 31 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair; born in the county of Kerry, Ireland; by occupation a shoe-maker. He has a wife and family in Savannah. Deserted on the 23d December, 1862, being at the time on detached duty with J.M.Conroy at Savannah.
