Patrick, When did your grandfather and his brother work at Brown's Farm? I'd heard of Brown's Farm before, but had forgotten the name. My great grandfather, Warren T. Wilson, worked as a guard for the county chain gang. I'm not sure what years he worked there total, but the 1930 census shows he was a guard at that time. Henry, Thanks for the info. Kensington Farm must be the dairy where my grandfather worked as a young man and also other relatives worked there. Many of the dairy workers must have lived nearby because when I found my grandfather on the 1930 census, many of the men living in the same vicinity listed their occupation as dairyman. Just a FYI for anyone interested in Von Waldner's, there is a Von Waldner who owns Putt Putt on Mall Blvd. He says his family has lived in Savannah for years and years. Just a FYI, he could probably help with any questions about the family. Patrick p.s. Peter, My GG Grandparents are buried in the "old section" of the Catholic Cemetery. They also have no headstones. I was told by my grandfather, that allot of those headstones were moved or stolen. He remembers when he was young going out and cleaning the tombstones out there. My GG Garndparents at one time had headstones, but who knows what happened. They were from Ireland also. Thomas Welsh and Lizzie Ellen Welsh, who married in Savannah,GA in 1890. Her last name was Murphy. If Welsh or Murphy is in your Irish lines let me know. I go out to the Catholic Cemetery at leat once a week, can look up a headstone with digital pic. if you would like. Write to the Savannah Catholic Archdiocese (I do not have their address handy, but I'm sure you can get it through the internet. I got a lot of information through them, they have baptism records and death records which give parents names if they have them. They were very helpful. I did send a small donation. Good Luck, Marie

Our family were friends of the Von Waldner's who owned and operated the Springfield Dairy -- early 1930's to probably 60's.
The Von Waldner's were associated with Sealtest in Savannah and owned the Yum Yum (ice cream) Shoppe on White Bluff Road. My cousin drove a milk truck for them, but the real good news is that my sister and another cousin both worked in the Yum Yum Shoppe after school in the 1970's. Ahhhh....to be the big brother with a driver's license to a sister who works in an ice cream store....those were the days. :-) Frank J. Hello, all. My name is Ms. Daryl Jenkins - I live in Atlanta - but was born and grew up in Savannah - and have subscribed to this group for some time. My grandparents, Edwin and Lida Mae Jenkins, had a dairy, Jenkins Dairy, which consisted of around 100 acres on White Bluff Road from the 1920s to 1942. According to my Aunt Eleanor (I just called her for this info), there was a conglomeration about 5 dairies on White Bluff. A Greek man by the name of Manilla Thomas, owned the dairy next to ours and our dairy was sold to him in 1942. Next to Mr. Thomas was a lady by the name of Mrs. Page who owned another dairy. Both the Thomas and Page dairy were smaller than ours. Across White Bluff Road was a dairy owned by the White's and next to the White's was a dairy owned by the Pitchlor family (Spelling could be incorrect). Also in the area was the Harm's Dairy. Hope this info helps someone out. If anyone needs to dig further, I will ask my Aunt to try to rack her brain. Warm regards, Daryl
Please keep an eye out for Gustav Miller. He worked as a dairyman in Savannah from 1830's to 1850's. Thank you, Caroline Byng Washington State
