Dear Bill (and Carole), Thank you for your kind words. The credit for this excellent work (and its reprint) belongs to the author/compiler, Clint MCCALL, also of FL. This is a genealogy site. 2. If not for the efforts of folks like Bob, making their research available to us, many of us would not have as much data as we presently have. I, for one, find it slightly difficult to visit the library or the courthouse in Statesboro, seeing as how I live in Orlando, Florida. Gleaning information from books such as the one Bob has created is a welcomed alternative, especially if it includes hard source information. And I see absolutely nothing wrong with a person seeking a small measure of remuneration for their efforts. After all, paper and ink ain't free no more. Hi there. In early Savannah, c. 1734, there was a William Bradley family. William had 4 children that I know of. One of the daughters, Martha, married Isaac Young, Jr., and died in Savannah in 1799. Her sister, Jane, married Col. John Barnard. William Bradley also had two sons, William, and Richard. William was associated with the Colonial Government, and was back and forth between Savannah and South Carolina. He died in 1766 and his will was made in Red Lion Square, London. Seems like his wife's name was Sarah, so your Sarah could be a grandchild of his. One of his sons was a surgeon in London, and I don't recall much about Richard. There is a great deal of information about this family, which does, somehow, connect with the Oates family, and Tondee, and so much of it can be found in the Colonial Records of Georgia and the Earl of Egmont's Journal. The Colonial Records are quite voluminous, but try to find an index to make the job a bit easier. I hope it is a match for your Sarah! I'm sorry I can't help more. Perhaps this will stir up some good history here on the list. Anybody game?<g> Carole Farr Drexel gdrexel1@airmail.net ----- Original Message ----- From: <IJaybug@aol.com> To: <GACHATHA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2003 9:57 PM Subject: [GACHATHAM] sarah a. bradley > looking for parents of sarah a. bradley born abt 1816 in ga,she md james n. > goodman 12/18/1834 in wilkinson cty ,ga,she states on census her parents were > from sc, somehow these to people connect to the carraway oates family, in > 1850 they were in henry cty, ala. in the home of john r. oates, son of > carraway oates, idella >
Dear Researchers, After being away from my e-mail a while and scanning over recent messages, particular clarification was needed with respect to the reprint announcement below. An anonymous response (no indication as to who "I" and "me" of the statement might be, other than an e-mail address) to the message below indicated that "I thought this was a Genealogy group..........not an advertising list. This to me is outrageous. So much for genealogy, right?" I recently tracked down the book at the Statesboro Regional Library (SRL), so that I could better gage my own purchase of the book (my wife's line of MCCALLs which spread throughout south Georgia and beyond). In this volume (and in a preceding paper* which establishes error that we have "inherited" in a long-cherished secondary source for the origin of our MCCALLs), the author demonstrates that there is no substitute for scholarly, documented genealogical research if our real aim is to establish some measure of truth about our ancestors and the lives that they led. The author seeks to build the descendancy report of Francis MCCALL from available primary evidence to the extent possible, and identifies secondary sources when their use was necessary. What more can we ask? These products ARE real genealogy (as opposed to trading undocumented genealogical rumors); letting us know about their availability for reading at a library, as well as for outright purchase (at cost or otherwise), is a great service to true genealogical research, and should be recognized as such. Those interested should contact me directly at the address listed below. The following paraphrases the original announcement: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: Descendants of Francis McCall of South Carolina From: Clint McCall Date: 20 December 2002 Re: Publication Availability Notice Title: “Francis McCall and Some Who Follow… A Descendant Compilation” Background I had computerized L. C. (Mac) McCall’s book: “Robert and Mary Lanier McCall - South Georgia Pioneers and Some of Their Descendants”, and Mac had amassed additional research since the publication of his second edition. We had agreed to collaborate on a new book combining his efforts with my research and the computer ability I brought to the venture. With Mac’s sudden passing, his daughter, Mary Ann McCall, very generously made Mac’s research available to me and more than 1,800 additional McCall and allied family members were made part of this new compilation due to Mac’s efforts. Content Of special interest to descendants of Francis are source document copies that show how the Francis McCall of Mecklenburg, NC was misidentified as our ancestor some seventy years ago. Our Francis lived in South Carolina. Also worthy of note is how Ettie Tidwell McCall identified the children of Charles McCall and how our ancestry is based, not upon source documents, but on a Family Tree drawn by Rev. George Robert McCall in the 1800’s. A significant discovery impacting the family history is that the State of South Carolina has no record of Charles McCall serving as a Revolutionary Soldier and the early Effingham County land grants to Charles were not “bounty grants” at all; they were “headright” grants. Our early family facts have been misreported all these many years... This spiral-bound compilation is produced by Family Tree Maker software on acid-free paper and contains 565 pages. The report is indexed by name and contains McCall records from numerous sources. Also included are a bibliography and several reference material appendices along with many sketches of our pioneering forefathers. The compilation contains a report of known burial locations with an indicator of which tombstones have been photographed. Cost This is a not-for-profit venture. The book fee of $45 per copy is to help defray the expenses of accumulating and disseminating this information. Postage and handling are included in the fee. Hi Everyone I've added the following databases and records to http://NaturalizationRecords.com/ this week: *~*~*~*~*~* GEORGIA http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ga_natpet.shtml Index to Naturalization Petitions for the Eastern (Savannah) Division of the Southern District of Georgia This is another index I created for online NARA digitized images. The earliest is dated 1783, the latest 1858. I have extracted arrival dates and ship names for all individuals (where available) and these are included with the index. Instructions are provided so that researchers can easily view the online images at NARA. Here's an example of what you might find in the index I created: The naturalization declaration and petition of Richard D. Fox. , 12/01/1843 [2 images: Sailed from London England arrived New York 21 April 1837 on Ship Gladiator. Living Chatham Co. GA] Using the online instructions to view those 2 images noted will provide more details. *~*~*~*~*~* As always, *all* records on NaturalizationRecords.com are FREE to use. Please let each page load completely and scroll down to view the records. Feel free to pass this message on to anyone you think might be interested. Good Evening, Please let me take this opportunity to make a statement to the list. I was not aware that Rootsweb had sent out the letter asking that the list members not send posts concerning the current situation. Call it ignorance on my part; whatever you like, but I did not know. At the same time, I should have know that my sending the speech could have been contraversial and could create problems on the list. As List Hostess, part of my duties are to keep things flowing smoothly and not to let personal feelings get in the way of our genealogical research. Our List Owner and myself both have an agreement that we do not tolerate 'flaming' of list members and I am appaled that my posting of the speech created a situation that lends itself to friction on the list. As List Hostess, it is never my intention to create problems on our list. I love my position of Hostess and am terribly sorry that this has created tension and even caused some of our list members to actually think of leaving. For those reasons, I am truly sorry for sending the post to the list. I appreciate the private emails from those of you who had positive comments and thanked me for posting the speech. I also appreciate the private emails from those of you who objected because you explained your reasons and made me realize that I should have sent the speech to individuals privately and not to the entire list. With that said, let's move on to the subject of genealogy and put this behind us :-) Warm Regards, Nancy E Parr, Hostess
Nancy, Thank you for sharing this speech. I am passing it on to others who share these views and value our military. My son is a Marine Corp Officer who is presently in Iraq fighting for their liberty and freedom from oppression. I get little sleep but spend a lot of time in prayer. Jimmy's letter to me this week expressed appreciation for all the prayers being offered for him and for our military. Let's support our military and our leaders with prayer. Alberta Lane

I received that message from several other lists I'm on, and am surprised to see a post such as yours from the list hostess. not meant to be unpatriotic or anarchistic, but please, don't stir up all that stuff; my email is already busy enough with my *intended* political mail. thanks. kirby

More than 1,200 people attended including featured speakers Chief Justice Roy Moore, Adjutant General Mark Bowen and Alabama State Auditor Beth Chapman. Attached is a copy of Mrs. Chapman's speech, which resulted in five standing ovations, tremendous applause and an encore. It's a short read and well worth it. I hope you enjoy it as we continue to "Stand up for America!" Stand Up for America Rally Speech By: Beth Chapman I'm here tonight because men and women of the United States military have given their lives for my freedom. I am not here tonight because Sheryl Crowe, Rosie O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Jane Fonda or Phil Donahue, sacrificed their lives for me. If my memory serves me correctly, it was not movie stars or musicians, but the United States Military who fought on the shores of Iwo Jima, the jungles of Vietnam, and the beaches of Normandy. Tonight, I say we should support the President of the United States and the U.S. Military and tell the liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippy, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and music and whine somewhere else. After all, if they lived in Iraq, they wouldn't be allowed the freedom of speech they're being given here today. Ironically, they would be put to death at the hands of Sadam Husssein or Osama Bin Laden. I want to know how the very people who are against war because of the loss of life, can possibly be the same people who are for abortion? They are the same people who are for animal rights but against the rights of the unborn. The movie stars say they want to go to Iraq and serve as "human shields" for the Iraqis. I say let them buy a one-way ticket and go. No one likes war. I hate war! But the one thing I hate more is the fact that this country has been forced into war-innocent people have lost their lives - - and there but for the grace of God, it could have been my brother, my husband, or even worse my own son. On December 7, 1941, there are no records of movie stars treading the blazing waters of Pearl Harbor. On September 11, 2001; there are no photos of movie stars standing as "human shields" against the debris and falling bodies ascending from the World Trade Center. There were only policemen and firemen - -underpaid civil servants who gave their all with nothing expected in return. When the USS Cole was bombed, there were no movie stars guarding the ship - - where were the human shields then? If America's movie stars want to be human shields, let them shield the gang-ridden streets of Los Angeles, or New York City, let them shield the lives of the children of North Birmingham whose mothers lay them down to sleep on the floor each night to shelter them from stray bullets. If they want to be human shields, I say let them shield the men and women of honesty and integrity that epitomizes courage and embody the spirit of freedom by wearing the proud uniforms of the United States Military. Those are the people who have earned and deserve shielding! Throughout the course of history, this country has remained free, not because of movie stars and liberal activists, but because of brave men and women who hated war too. However, they lay down their lives so that we all may live in freedom. After all - "What greater love hath no man, that he lay down his life for his friend," or in this case a country. We should give our military honor and acknowledgement and not let their lives be in vain. If you want to see true human shields, walk through Arlington Cemetery. There lie human shields, heroes, and the BRAVE Americans who didn't get on television and talk about being a human shield - they were human shields. I thank God tonight for freedom - - those who bought and paid for it with their lives in the past - - those who will protect it in the present and defend it in the future. America has remained silent too long! God-fearing people have remained silent too long! We must lift our voices united in a humble prayer to God for guidance and the strength and courage to sustain us throughout whatever the future may hold. After the tragic events of Sept. 11th, my then eleven -year-old son said terrorism is a war against them and us and if you're not one of us, then you're one of them. So in closing tonight, let us be of one accord, let us stand proud, and let us be the human shields of prayer, encouragement and support for the President, our troops and their families and our country. May God bless America, the land of the free, the home of the brave and the greatest country on the face of this earth!
Can someone please tell me where the First Militia District is in Chatham Co. What streets; what does it include? Is it a military area? My great grandparents were living there in the 1900 census. Thank you, Caroline
Pam, if they got married in Folkston , Ga they didn't have to have a waiting period of 3 days, or get permission. Only a few Georgia towns were that way. What town did they get married in in Georgia? Interesting. Bettye
