I wouldn't pay $5 a visit. I'd spend the $35 to become a member, read the GA Historical Quarterly that comes with membership, visit a lot more than seven times to get my money's worth, and while I was there I'd put on the white gloves again and actually hold the naturalization papers my greatgrandfather completed to become an American. On second thought, maybe I'd give whatever they asked, or even more. I agree with you Frank the white gloves are quite an experience. Also as a member of GHS copies are cheaper and there is a discount on books you buy as well. The GA Historical Quarterly that is published 4x a year is excellent. I received mine last week. Directions to Bonaventure Cemetery traveling south on I-95. From I-95, take the I-16 exit, East, The sign will read Savannah/Macon, the first exit will be west to Macon, the second will be East to Savannah. Take the GA-204 Exit, Exit number 165, ( 37th Street) go to the third red light and turn right on Martin Luther King Blvd. Go a few blocks to the first red light, this will be US 80, Victory Drive. Turn left on Victory Drive and travel around 3.29 miles to WHATLEY AVENUE. ( The First red light after you pass a Bank of America Bank and enter into Thunderbolt, GA) Turn left on Whatley, travel Whatley about one long block to stop sign, make left traveling to first stop sign and Bonaventure Gate is on the right. The distance is about 6 miles from your exiting I-16. Hope this helps, Fred
Based on some information sent to me by Richard Byrd (Thanks Richard!!!!!!), I'm wondering if anyone on the GACHATHAM list has information about the following organizations and their members? - Forest City Lodge 16 - Junior Order - United American Mechanics - Savannah Council 17 - Daughters of America According to the obituary in the Savanah Morning News, my grandfather, Robert Franklin CARTER Sr, was a member of these organizations when he died March 23, 1933. He was a fisherman and reportedly lived near the Hwy 204 bridge at Bryan County line on the Ogeechee River. Also, it lists one of his brothers as Edward J. CARTER of Ways, the name of which was later changed to Richmond Hill. If anyone has information on Edward J. CARTER or on any of the above named organizations, would appreciate hearing from you and will be happy to share what I have as well. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC
The best way is to get on the web at www.maps.com and enter your destination. It's a great tool. The easiest way to stay on main roads is to get off on Hwy 80 East off I-95 and stay on it until you get to Bonaventure Road on your left, just before you go over the Wilmington River bridge. You'll go thru some ugly parts of west Savannah (slums), but there's not a lot of road changes. Hwy 80 inside of Savannah is called Victory Drive named for the war dead, and is lined with palmetto trees and azeleas. Someone in Savannah have a better route? Bob Carter (H. V. Bob, excellent suggestion on the most direct route to Bonaventure Cemetery from I-95. A map would definitely help. You will go through west Savannah before you get to the section of Victory Drive where you turn left on Bonaventure Road. Follow Bonaventure Road - the Cemetery will be on your right. Hello, Can anyone give me explicit directions on how to get to Bonaventure Cemetery? I will be coming from SC on Hwy 95. Thank you in advance Susan Martin
I found the following site which seems to have good info: http://home.att.net/~Local_Catholic/CatholicUS-AtlantaGA-NC-SC.htm There is a "Catholic Cemetery" in Savannah located on Wheaton Street. She became a nun at an early age and worked in the Savannah area. She was known as Sister Mary Antonia Madden and her secular name was Mary Bridget Madden. Can anyone on the list tell me the name of the Catholic establishments in Savannah at the turn of the century and what cemeteries they used? Hubert Madden is reported to have died in St. Joseph's Infirmary in Atlanta but is probably buried next to his daughter.
