    1. Help! Do You Know Michael Brown?
    2. Ed Grady
    3. Does anyone who researches the Brown name in Savannah know of a Michael Brown who was "of Savannah" between April 4, 1829, and October 11, 1834? On those two dates he deeded slaves and land to Hart and Saul Solomons (and the second date includes Saul's wife Esther) in trust both times for the children of both brothers. These men lived in Beaufort District,SC, and the records from Beaufort District were burned with Columbia during the war. I descend from Saul and records are so hard to find. Carolyn Ramsay

    1. JOSEPH MANIGAULT
    2. Edward L. Manigault
    3. Dear List: I have recently discovered that a "long-missing" relative, Capt. Joseph Manigault, lived in Savannah for many years before his death there, June 17, 1911. He had been on Gen. R. E. Lee's staff in 1861 & 1862, was Assistant Adjutant General in the Confederate Army, and lived at one time on "Shubra" plantation on the Savannah River and later bought land on "Pennyworth" Island. Can anyone suggest the proper sources for death certificates, wills, possible marriage license, etc. ? I live a considerable distance from Savannah and will have to write for documents. Is there any on-line source of census or any other applicable data? I would certainly appreciate any help. Edward Manigault

    3. Nancy, there are no Fleetwood surnames found in the EFFINGHAM COUNTY CEMETERY BOOK. We are presently preparing an updated edition of this publication. At the present time there are no burials by the name Fleetwood and the new edition will simply add those buried since the first edition which was about 5 or six years ago. Not to say that they could not have expired here in this county. There are still many unmarked sites, as well as old cemeteries that have crumbled away or some that may have not been ever uncovered. 1. Effingham-Savannah Family
    2. Nancy Fleetwood Miller
    3. I am searching for the parents of Green Fleetwood who was born in 1810 and died in 1856. Theoretically, this would mean the parents would have married before 1810 and would have been born around 1790 or before. According to "family stories," Green and his brother, John, were orphaned when they were about 10-12 years old. Both boys married girls from Effingham County: Green married Mary Morgan in 1832 and John married Mary [Margaret] Thompson in 1840...both girls are from Effingham County. I have found extensive information on the Morgan family. Green and John show up in Savannah in the 1840 Census, where they raise their families (John had no children) and where they establish careers as harbor pilots and ship captains. Family legend also has it that the first Fleetwood to settle in Georgia was John Fleetwood. Supposedly, he made his home among the Salzburgers. I have no documentation of this, but since Green and John married girls from Effingham and there are no traces of Fleetwood's in Savannah before they show up there in 1840, it does seem probable that they were living there. I need some help trying to find information on the Fleetwood family in Effingham County. One idea may be to search Effingham cemeteries, but I don't know where to begin. I'm sure there must be many documents that I could pursue, but I need some help identifying and developing a plan. I am not at all familiar with researching Effingham County. I really appreciate any advice or help! Nancy Fleetwood Miller

    3. I just spoke to the staff at Bonaventure. I live close by in Effingham and visit there quite often. Yes, they are indeed pleasant and helpful, as well as so very knowledgable of this famous old burying ground. But, I asked about the the index cards and this needs to be clarified somewhat. Those index cards do not contain burials prior to 1800's. She kindly checked for me, anyway, as I am looking for the burial site of Abraham Gable who died in 1790. His will confirms this date. She did check and there is no such surname recorded there. She, like myself believes that he would have been buried in Old Colonial Cemetery. I have of course, already checked there, also finding no such surname. But the burials there are still quite questionable as many of the old stones were unmarked or damaged by others over the years. Who will ever really know the number of those from that period whom were really buried there? To continue on, this wonderful and patient woman also checked Laurel Grove Cemetery for me, and did locate 3 burials that might be connected, but are much too late for the actual info that I seek. All of this being so important in my Gable research! One of these burial was for a JOHN GABLE, a name used repeatly in my gable line. But this one being buried in 1864. Much later that my Abraham or his son John. But then who knows, I must follow this up. A question arose that I thought some of you might be able to help me with. 2. Linda, i just read your post and noticed that you're searching Donnelly from Ireland and Savannah. My gr gr grandmother was Anne Theresa Donnelly from Ireland (Co. Louth) who married Anthony Palmer (somewhere) and lived in Savannah. I was unable to locate any information on her in Ireland, have no idea where she and Anthony met (no marriage in Savannah) and don't know what ship and with whom she came to this country. Any possibility there's a connection. Mary Ellen

    2. Judy Canant - Hello: Received your inquiry relating to the EADY surname of Savannah, Georgia. It appears as if the surname EADY is very, very common in the Southeastern part of Georgia and the adjacent part of South Carolina. Hence, rather than forwarding to you substantial information which is useless to you, could you please furnish to me some guidelines for use in editing the information which I have. Date and place of birth, date and place of death, full name, and similar information will be a big help. As mentioned in my prior message, I do not recognize as being related to my EADYs any of the names reflected as being buried in the indicated lot. Possibly, the cemetery office could furnish to you information relating to those buried in the applicable lot and their relationship to the others buried in the lot. I have used this approach in other searches with some success. Look forward to hearing from you. Robert D. Peterson e-mail address: [email protected]

    3. Hi Judy and other Listers, I purchased the following book last summer at the Chicamauga Battle Site. This was a very moving experience and recommend a visit. The book is CAMP FIRES OF GEORGIA'S TROOPS, 1861-1865 By William S. Smedlund. I purchased in preparation for my Savannah research but have got "Hung up" so to speak in Cheshire England and have not started on Savannah as yet. However I've remained on the Ga and Savannah list in order to watch for someone searching the same names. In the book it states......Camp Colston Chatham County, Georgia The camp is probably located on the parade grounds behind the city park. An ad in the Savannah Morning News. dated 23 December 23, 1863, for a strayed horse from the camp of the 57th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, asks that the finder return the horse to the camp of the 57th Ga Vols. in the rear of the park. (See Camp Lawton) Georgia Troops: 57th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry, 12/14/1863 I checked Camp Lawton and it was located on the parade grounds to the rear of the city park, now Forsythe Park and gives a 2page description of Camp Lawton. I also checked the index for Proper Names mentioned and did not find any Gables. However, the book does not list everyone, just the leaders. It does give information on how to locate a relative, using the various films etc. I hope this helps in some way, Linda Bowman Researching Atkins in Savannah GA, SC and VA Donnelly in Savannah Ga and Ireland Pritchard in Savannah Ga and Cheshire England Allen in Ga, Ala and Miss.
