    2. Mary Ellen, Thanks for the tips. My problem is that I don't have the money to spend to order a bunch of CDs and books. I have gone to the S.C. Archives, which is 40 miles from here. It's a great source for our S.C. connections, but of course only has a smattering of books on Chatham County, Ga. According to my wife's grandmother, she was not put in an orphanage. Thanks again, Jim DuPlessis, Camden, S.C.

    1. Re: [GACHATHAM] Lufburrow mystery
    2. Have you tried looking at the 1850, 1860 and 1900 census for all the Lufburrow's? Also, if the mother was working, she may have put her child into an orphanage. You might ask on the list if there was any Luthern orphanges in Savannah at that time. (My gr. grmother had to put my grmother in one but it was Catholic). Does the Luthern Church have records on their members? Savannah has a city directory that goes back to the 1850's, someone might help you out by looking up the name during the 1880's. It'll tell you who's in the household. Did you check for a will? Land records? Have you checked for marriages records? I don't think any of this is online so you may end up either ordering from the LDS or asking someone to look for you. Mary Ellen

    1. [GACHATHAM] Mercer-Olmstead's 1st Georgia Regiment
    2. I have put the rosters of the GA 1st Infantry Regiment (Mercer- Olmstead's) on line on my Civil War in Georgia site. This regiment was made up of 11 companies and 1797 men - all from Chatham county. They spent most of the war in the Savannah area, other than a stint in Virginia, then back to GA and SC for the Sherman invasion. 1. [GACHATHAM] Lufburrow mystery
    2. March 7, 2001 I've reached a deadend in searching for my wife's Lufburrow ancestors. My wife's paternal grandmother was Helen Lufburrow, born in Savannah Oct. 1, 1888 and died in Greenville, S.C. April 7, 1978. The story Helen L. told was that her mother [nope, don't know that name either] married a Lufburrow who died shortly before Helen was born. He was wealthy but his adult children excluded Helen's mother from any inheritance. Thus, Helen's mother afterward worked as a governess on some large estates in the Savannah area. Helen was very involved in the Lutheran church. The only Lufburrows I've found in Savannah include a Matthew M. Lufburrow, who was born 1787 in Monmouth County, N.J., died in 1865 and is buried at Savannah's Laurel Grove Cemetery. His wife was Mary Gregory Lufburrow, born 1796 in Goldsboro, N.C., died 1886 and also buried at Laurel Grove Cemetery. This couple would be the right age to be Helen's grandparents, or greatgrandparents. There is also an 1874-75 diary account by Fannie White, then a 14-year-old in Savannah that refers to "Mrs Levietta Lufburrows, her teacher in S. S., as well as mine, Mrs Levie teaches a class in the Lutheran & Baptist S. S., I am in her class in both S. S. Eliza is only in her class in the Baptist S. S. I like Mrs. Levie very much; she is a young widow, only married 3 weeks when her husband died. I spent a right nice afternoon with her & Eliza, she gave me a bouquet of flowers our of her garden. " The Mormon FamilySearch site shows a Matthew Lufburrow who married a Levietta S. Russell Nov. 12, 1872 in Savannah, but nothing more. I'm guessing this Matthew could be a son, or grandson, of the couple buried at Laurel Grove and perhaps a brother of Helen's father. Does anyone have any information or suggestions? 1. [GACHATHAM] Census
    2. CAROLYN RAMSAY
    3. Tim, THANKS !!! In the first segment I found both Samuel and Edward W. Solomons for whom I have watched this list for at least two years! Not only did you give me their births, but you also gave me a big clue for the birth of their father Hart Solomons who also lived in Savannah and told me the boys were born in SC (I'm sure that was Beaufort District). I guess I will have to get down to Savannah before long to look at other records. Beaufort District,SC, is a burned county, thanks to Sherman, and I can't find old records there. 3. Another one I'm not sure made it to the list: I've started posting the 1850 Chatham County census online. The 1850 census consisted of 1979 households. I have the first 36 households posted. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gachatha/cens1850.htm Well now it is 56 households as of today. Feedback please! Tim Stowell [email protected] Chattanooga, TN

    1. [GACHATHAM] SEEKING Frain and Variant Surnames...
    2. Karl T. and Wendy Mayfield
    3. Dear List, I am seeking the FRAIN family residing around Savannah. I noted on the SSDI that there was an Eleanor FRAIN and a William FRAIN both residing in Savannah. And the Georgia Death index gives also several names, but nothing I can make a connection to. The 1870 Fed Cen. Savannah lists a FRAIN, John wife Anne possible relations to FRAIN, Richard Alexander living in Augusta Georgia. Son Walter S.(aunders) FRAIN Emigrated through Savannah 1861 from Wexford Ire. I loose track of John after 1870. No one residing with him besides Anne... There is only 1 other possible connection of a Sanders Joseph FRAIN born in Newton Co., GA (son of the above Walter) but I loose track of him after 1880. Does anyone have any information that might lead to this missing family?? (I feel like Blue in Blue's Clue's... A Clue A Clue? Where Here??) HELLLLP! <G> Hugs Wendy

    1. Re: [GACHATHAM] Does anyone know of BALFOUR Ferries?
    2. In a message dated 3/1/01 12:51:24 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << Subj: Re: [GACHATHAM] Does anyone know of BALFOUR Ferries? Date: 3/1/01 12:51:24 PM Eastern Standard Time From: [email protected] Reply-to: [email protected] To: [email protected] I live in Hayden Lake Idaho, and have been on the Balfour ferry near Nelson British Columbia. Can I look for somethin in particular for you? Becky >> Thank you for the response, Becky. I had hoped that the Balfour Ferries were near Savannah, and because I couldn't get into that site, it was hard to tell what it was all about. Now, at least, I do know where the Balfour Ferries are. (boo-hoo). My Robert BALFOUR, drowned off the Savannah Bar in 1837, and he was not a resident of Savannah, but still a resident of Scotland. He had a young son named Robert Charles BALFOUR who ended up in the Episcopal orphan house. I have not yet found a wife for Robert who drowned. Robert's older brother, John BALFOUR, died four years later in Boston, MA. I don't think he was a resident there. They travelled a lot by water, and with the help of someone on this list, I found the name of the small ship that sank off the Savannah Bar in 1837 - The MAGISTRATE. I have not found another thing on that boat. I have now found a LOT on my BALFOUR family in Scotland, thanks to parish records. I mean, MANY generations. Robert's parents were in Melrose Parish in Roxburghshire, Scotland, where Robert was born. His father was The Rev. William BALFOUR and his mother was Mary MEIN. (MEIN is a Sept of the Clan MENZIES). The family, however, was originally from Markinch, Fife, Scotland, and through parish records I have gone quite a ways back, now. Interestingly, my Robert BALFOUR (who drowned) was the nephew of John BALFOUR, who was on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Darien, GA, as well as involved in legal cases, making me believe he was a lawyer. He and Robert travelled a lot, together, coming into Savannah from 1800, on, from Charleston. I haven't found any clues in Charleston, either. Isn't it interesting to find so much on early records and not enough on more recent records. Oh, well......I am still looking. Thanks again. Judy (Presnell) Canant
