Samuel Miller was born in SC about 1722; his father was reputed to have come from the Islands to SC. Jim
Jim, Are your Millers connected to mine? My Andrew and Samuel were born in or near York PA, and migrated to Savannah between 1847 & 1851. Philadelphia is not very far from York. I also have another Miller line from Philadelphia. Susan Marshall [email protected]
It took 7 years, but I finally made contact with a cousin from the Miller Bond Grant branch of the family. As luck would have it, he has the Grant Family Bible, and I was able to fill-in many blank spaces for lots of kin from Savannah and Philadelphia. I also learned of plantations and such I didnt know existed. Miller's obituary indicates that he graduated West Point and was involved in the construction of Savannah's Civil War fortifications and the pontoon bridge the troops used to evacuate Savannah by. In the 1870s he was an engineer on the James Eads St.Louis Bridge, then returned to Savannah. Venables Bond's fate has been an old mystery, but the Bible records that he died at Savannah 19 October 1819. His wife, Nancy Ann Miller, died at Savannah 28 July 1828. Searching for a missing 3rd great grandfather, Alexander Turner, I may have found him in the Macon area circa 1815, where his estate was being adinistered by son, Joseph and a daughter? with the last name of Cowart. Jim Johnson

Rich and Gerald, What years/century did Wm. Cone live? I have been trying to find out something about a Mary CONE who md. my ancestor, Samuel PAVEY. He was born about 1710. (This information is "family tradition" ... no documentation.) It could be that one of his brothers (Joseph Pavey/Pevey) was hired by Oglethorpe as a Ranger/Victualler in Savannah & Augusta in the 1730's. Thanks. Hi..... I have lived in Thunderbolt, Ga. all my life and remember a Rev. Shelley who was pastor of St. Lukes Lutheran Church on Mechanics Avenue in Thunderbolt for fifteen years. He died on February 14th of 1946 in the parsonage next door to the church. I remember seeing him that night through the screen door sitting in a chair and the next day we found out that he had a heart attack and died. Joe Wilharm, Thunderbolt......

I have a copy of a Diary written by an Uncle - George Pournelle, who was a ME Minister and wrote the Diary at the request of his Bishop. He gave the name of his father as John. He never called his mother by name, but she was received into the Church at a town outside of Baltimore. Hhe gave the names of his 2 brothers: John and William. The son John was born ca. 1797 in Baldwin Co., GA per the 1860 Census of Chatham Co. George b. 1801 NY and Wm. (my direct) b. 1803 Long Island , NY. The diary said his father died in the Late War with the British (War of 1812) died near the end of the War (I guess 1815) at Camp Jax. The family was living in Savannah at that time, later they removed to Sandersville, Wash. Co., GA. Do you suppose Camp Jax is Fort Jackson. I have never been able to find a reference to his death. Any reference to his death would be greatly appreciated. I have looked in books listing the soldiers in War of 1812 - he was not listed. Thanks, Mary

The Public Library on Bull Street has both, as well as the Georgia Historical Society. The Bull Street location is easier to use as they have more microfilm readers and "elbow room" in which to work.
The Ice House is closed, but there's a zillion others.
My aunt and uncle have lived in Charleston since the late 40's I believe. I think the name of a place they brought me once was called, The Ice House. I am not sure of name. But really good food. Line went around building with people waiting to get in! Yes, go to the main library on Bull Street. Good luck with your search. Mary Ellen, ps. also go to the Ga. Historical Society on Drayton St.
