    1. [GACHATHAM] Savannah photo: part 2.
    2. William A. Mills
    3. Chatham County Researchers: Yesterday (17 May 2001), I posted a message pertaining to an old photo card that I have of Savannah, GA, from about the turn of the century. I scanned it sort of large so that the details could be viewed. A few of you have asked me to upload a smaller image that could be printed out easier. It is now online at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=953251&a=12954639&p=48641660&Sequence=0&res=high Take care, William Mills Perry, GA [email protected] ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! My > >system is cl > Hello :-) Hopefully we won't have the virus problems within our list members here on the Chatham list. I'm on a couple of lists through yahoogroups and the viruses are making the rounds there! I hope everyone has a virus scan program installed on their computer. These newer viruses are extremely sneaky. In case you don't know how they work, here's a very simple explaination. Someone unsuspecting receives an attachment on an email; they open the attachment and .....BAM...the virus invades their computer (this is if they DONT have a virus scan program installed and current!) These newer viruses get into the address box of your email program and they find a message and 'attach' the virus to an old message and send it out to everyone in your address book. You don't even know it is happening until someone writes to you telling you that YOU"VE SENT THEM A VIRUS_INFECTED ATTACHMENT! Let me be very clear in stating that these viruses do NOT come in through a mailing list such as rootsweb. Rootsweb does not allow attachments in the emails so there is no way they are coming in through a list. They are getting into the computers of the members and then being sent from member to member through the address book of the email programs on your computers. Until these viruses are cleared out completely, I would advise NOT opening any attachments without positive proof that the sender did actually send you something in an attachment. Even if one comes into your computer, as long as you don't OPEN the attachment, you are safe. On one of the lists at yahoogroups, it's been a mad house. I received a total of 19 virus-infected attachments in one day alone! Thank goodness for Norton Anti-Virus. Like I said the new viruses are sneaky. They will take this very message and use the same subject line and you will think you are just receiving another email from that person's private email address. However, there will be an attachment and if you will scroll down to the end of the message you will see this written : >Look to the attachment This is a dead giveaway that it's a virus!!! Delete it immediately and you'll be okay. Regards, Nancy E Parr---Hostess

    3. The old photo was taken between Whitaker and Bull Streets facing East on Oglethorpe Ave. The Independent Presbyterian Church is on the right. This view is from the side, the Church faces Bull St. Betty

    3. Chatham County Researchers: I was recently looking thru a box of old papers and things, and found an old postcard type photo of Savannah, GA. It looks like one of the first souvenir postal cards which came out in the 1893 to 1898 era. This particular one is of Oglethorpe Avenue in Savannah, GA ... complete with the mis-spelling as "Oglethrope". The back says: Handcolored Series No. 5654. Adolph Seige Pub. Co., St. Louis - Leipzig. Printed in Germany. Souvenir Card. The photo is much larger than a regular postcard, and is about 5 1/2 X 7". There is a fold down the middle of the card. I assume that the card was supposed to be folded in half, and then placed in an envelope for mailing. Or, maybe it was supposed to be folded so the the photo portion was on the inside when it was mailed. I'm not really sure :-) I have uploaded a scanned image of this old card at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=953251&a=12954639&p=48641661&Sequence=0&res=high I scanned it sort of large so that you can see all of the details of the building. Take care & happy hunting! William Mills Perry, GA [email protected] ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 3. Thank you for sharing the photo. Where on Oglethorpe Ave. was the picture taken? It doesn't appear to be in the area of the police department, maybe around Bull St.? I've been away so long I'm sorry to say I do not recognize the building. Maureen ----- Original Message ----- From: William A. 2. OK, here's one way to find out about Savannah city directories. Go to www.familysearch.org. Select Family History Library Catalog. Search by PLACE (e.g. Savannah part of Georgia) Being as the LDS folks film just about everything public, the FHL Catalog is great place to see what's publicly available. And, if you order the microfilm for a few dollars, you can read Savannah city directories without leaving your hometown. :-) Frank J. I'm interested in Stephen Hattrich, a tailor at 213 Charlton Street, & his father-in-law Charles Ludwig Schreck. On another line, I'm looking for Hart Solomons and his sons Edward W. and Samuel Solomons. Hart would have died before 1840. Another relative of this group is Michael Brown from the 1820s. I can't seem to get down to Savannah. Guess I will eventually.
