    2. A very kind man is sending me a copy of a letter written by my ancestor, James Bond Grant, written immediately following the first Bull Run battle at Manassas, Virginia. James was a private in Company 'B' from Savannah, and the letter is reputed to be an excellent account of Company B's participation in the battle. Hopefully it will include references to other men in the Company from the Savannah area. Jim Johnson

    3. We are hoping to be in Savannah towards the end of this coming week. Would one of you know where we would most likely find city directories for any or all years between 1910 and 1927? Jesse Alexander Newsome (born c 1875, GA) is on the 1910 Fed census in Chatham Co with his wife, Fannie Wimberly Newsome and their four children (William, Sarah Ellen, Louise and Margaret.) However, we lose him after that. No record of him again until he's listed as deceased on William's marriage license in 1927. We know where he's buried (Lyons, GA) but the headstone has no dates and we haven't been able to get burial info from the local funeral home, or city clerk's office. We are told that the cemetery does not have an office. With any luck, the city directories might give us a clue as to if he died in Savannah or somewhere else. At least narrowing that 17 year stretch would give us a better shot at ordering a death certificate. So, if someone might tell us where to look for the directories or suggest another strategy, we'd be very grateful. 2. I am looking for information regarding the Port Authority for the Port of Savannah.  Is there a web site that is searchable or an address to contact someone for help?  When did ships begin entering the US at Savannah?  Her's the Georgia Ports Authority URL. http://www.gaports.com/ptsavannah.html As for the second question, ships probably began entering the US at Savannah as soon as the city was founded in 1733. 1. [GACHATHAM] TURNER, FELL, BLAKEWOOD, SHICK, RICKER, HOLLAND (long)
    2. I have started looking a little harder into another family line…BLAKEWOOD/SHICK/STROBHART. Ann Winefred BLAKEWOOD, (b: April 1, 1821 in St. Luke Parish, SC, m: July 14, 1864 in Hardeeville SC, W.J.E. Fripp, Pastor M.E. Ch., Father: James B. BLAKEWOOD, Mother: Hannah Ritter SHICK) married first: Edward E. F. RICKER, a carpenter who died of pneumonia on January 30, 1854 in Purysburg SC then she married: Thomas Morgan TURNER b: Abt 1811 in Philadelphia PA, Profession: Pharmacist (was this man the Mayor of Savannah at one time?) Thomas M. TURNER was first married to: +Sophia Marshall FELL, b: September 1801 in GA d: November 1859 in Savannah GA m: March 8, 1831, Father: Isaac FELL, Mother: Elizabeth (Betsey) SHICK (daughter of John, but I'm not sure which one). Thomas and Sophia had the following children: ..... 2 Sophia M. TURNER b: Abt 1835 ..... 2 George TURNER b: Abt 1837, Profession: Lawyer ..... 2 Mary TURNER b: Abt 1843 ..... 2 William M. B. TURNER b: Abt 1846 ..... 2 Amanda L. TURNER b: Abt 1837 This gets even more mixed up: Sophia Marshall FELL was first married to: William R. Holland (b: Abt 1798 in SC, d: September 1824) on April 6, 1821. He was a druggist. I am not sure if there were children from this marriage. They lived on Broughton St./Heathcote I saw a posting on the Genforum board, by a Deborah Turner Lanier, but it was an old posting and her e-mail address had evaporated, so I could not get in touch with her. She mentioned in the posting that her family was from Savannah. Does anyone on the list know her? Does anyone on the list know of the people mentioned above? Susan Marshall [email protected]

    2. Bob Carter
    3. Am looking for someone that might be able to do a lookup for me on the 1860 Chatham County, GA census. Not sure of the parents names, but the children would be Robert CARTER and brother Ben, or Benjamin. In 1860, Robert would be about 4 yrs old and the 1870 sensus he'd be 16 years old. Ben should be about 3 years younger than Robert. Robert married Josephine LIGHTSEY in September 5, 1875 and is on the 1880 census as having a brother "Ben" living with him as well as his wife Josephine and his 2 yr old daughter Mary. This is from an E-mail I got from Marty MORGAN a couple of weeks ago. Any help on this would certainly be appreciated. I'd given up trying to do any search on my own direct line to Robert since we'd not known if he even had any siblings. Don't know of his parents either. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC
