Frank, Thanks so much for writing. We've been working on Jesse Newsom(e) for so long that we welcome a fresh perspective. The good news is that we know he's buried in Lyons City Cemetery, Lyons, Toombs Co., GA. The bad news is that his headstone has no dates. The cemetery has no records. There is no death certificate at the Toombs Co courthouse. The local monument supplier and funeral home don't have records before 1931. We don't even know if he died in GA or somewhere else because he's buried next to his brother-in-law who died down here in West Palm Beach, FL. Jesse's not on the Florida death index, nor the North Carolina death index (where his wife was living in 1927 before she and the children moved to Florida.) There are three remote possibilities on the GA death index. Thought if someone up there happened to be looking at directories, they might scope out a couple for us. I go to genealogical libraries in Palm Beach and St. Lucie Counties, if anybody needs anything from Florida. Pam Pamela Newsome Marietta Palm Beach County, Florida ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Johnston" <[email protected]> Rather than check 18 city directories for a missing person, it might be more productive to check the WPA books on the 3 largest cemeteries, Laurel Grove, Bonaventure, and Catholic. Pam - Hello: If you receive a response to your inquiry relating to City of Savannah, Georgia, City Directories, I would greatly appreciate it if you would furnish to me at the e-mail address set forth below the applicable name and address, and hopefully the applicable e-mail address, as I would like to contact the person for a look-up of certain of my ancestors who resided in Savannah during the time frame. Your cooperation and assistance will be appreciated. Robert D. Peterson e-mail address: [email protected]
Pam, Rather than check 18 city directories for a missing person, it might be more productive to check the WPA books on the 3 largest cemeteries, Laurel Grove, Bonaventure, and Catholic. The death date would be listed. These books are available on microfilm from a Family History Center. Check the catalog at FamilySearch.org for details. Our trip to Vidalia and Savannah was cut short unexpectedly and it may be a while before we can get away again. We are trying to nail down a death date for Jesse Alexander NEWSOME during that time frame. He and his family are on the 1910 fed census in Savannah: NEWSOME, Jessie A. (may also be listed as Alex) NEWSOME, Fannie R. (Frances) Ellen S., age 12 Louise, age 10 William, age 7 Margaret G. age 6 If Fannie suddenly turned up listed by herself, it might give us a date to work with, anyway. Of course, to complicate things, Newsome can be spelled without the "e" and also as Nusom, Newson, etc. Thanks so much. Thanks to all!!!! Think we'll have to make a trip up there! Sounds like an interesting cemetery. Ginny in Florida
The best way is to go east on Hwy 80 (Victory Drive) like you're heading to Tybee Island. Look for the historical signs pointing you to the left before you get to Thunderbolt, which is the last stop light you have before you cross the Wilmington River. Although I'm from Savannah, I've never known the street names to use to give directions, but can get you there in the dark if I have to. :-) Bob Carter (Jenkins H.S., class ' 64) Greensboro, NC ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2001 4:47 PM Subject: Re: [GACHATHAM] Cemetery Question > But can someone tell me where? The Bull Run battle letter arrived today and is better than I was expecting, though I was told it was excellent. It's very long and very detailed...a few of the names are difficult to read, and hopefully descendants of these people will be able to make sense of the spelling. The historian who sent me the letter suspects there may be more of his letters buried in the Savannah paper, and perhaps some of the drawings James did while a soldier in Virginia. We have a few of these drawings...children, camp scenes, the unfinished dome of the US Capitol, and interesting birds. As the letter is very long, I may split it up into installments. Jim Johnson
Hello: Recommend that you read the following book which you can probably obtain from your local public library either directly or as the result of an Inter-Library Loan: Title: HISTORIC BONAVENTURE CEMETERY Authors: Amie Marie Wilson and Mandi Dale Johnson Published by: The Georgia Historical Society Publisher: Arcadia Publishing 2 Cumberland Street Charleston, South Carolina 29401 ISBN: 0-7524-1231-0 Good Luck! Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah 330 Bonaventure Road. Surrounded by marshes and a river, this cemetery's lush vegetation swells over its entrance. Resting on the site of a former plantation house, its numerous granite and marble tombs cradled by ancient oaks dripping Spanish moss are the backdrop for John Berendt's Southern Gothic tale, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, that has brought so many tourists to this cemetery's paths that the owners of the sculpture featured on the book's cover have moved it to keep it safe. (Tombstone Etiquette) For now, you can see it in the Telfair Museum. A Stranger's Tomb near the entrance is used as a temporary site for deceased Savannah visitors waiting to be returned home. Residence of composer Johnny Mercer and poet Conrad Aiken.
But can someone tell me where? I would like to see if I can write the cemetery to see if other family members are buried there. This is on my father's line and I know very little about them. Thanks so much! Ginny in Florida
