    1. RE: [GACHATHAM] German Lutheran Church (Pastor -vs- Reverend)

    3. The German Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church of the Ascension are the same church. Rev. Stephen Albion Mealy was at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension 1824-1839. The title Reverend goes to one who has been ordained. The position of Pastor usually indicates the head of a congregation, as one could be ordained and not have a church of his own. My time was limited, so I was going for some of the "easier" sources that I recognized at the time. I'm especially interested in the AMBOS and SEMKEN members who attended this Church. These people are all relatives of mine who lived and died in Savannah. If you should happen to stumble across any of these in the future... thanks in advance! Take care, Peter Nesbitt

    3. In this particular message it is title vs. position. Many times you will see them interchanged as the persons title. Very seldom these days do I see Reverend used anymore. A shame I feel it holds a higher respect than Pastor - but that's my personal opinion. There are a few places that still use Reverend regularly in their practices. They are the more traditional in their lifestyles. 1. [GACHATHAM] Catholic Cemetery
    2. Several weeks ago someone was kind of enough to e-mail me that they were going to Savannah and were going to look-up the graves of my great and great grandfather whom are buried there Jacob and Thomas Crapps/Crappse. They were very happy to be able to do this. They were going to take a picture and mail it to me of which I am very appreciative of. Shortly after they e-mailed me of their willingness to do this I had a computer problem and had to re-install everything which caused me to lose my saved e-mails. I do not know who this person was now and I in turn never heard back from them. If the person I am referring to subscribes to this list, please let me know the results. Thanks again, Marie [email protected]

    3. I just returned from a genalogy trip to Savannah, where I spent many hours at the Georgia Historical Library and the Bull Street Library in the downtown area. Many of my relatives were listed in the City Directories... some had occupations listed as "works". Do any of you know what exactly this means? That the person literally "works"... is involved in boating "works"... any ideas? Thanks, Peter Nesbitt

    3. Pam, A few years ago I needed a death certificate in Savannah. The Health Dept. folks couldn't find it. They sent me a list of everyone with a close name. The list was produced from their database of death certificates going back to the mid-1800s. So, if Jesse died in Chatham Co. the Health Dept. may be of assistance. Frank J. -----Original Message----- From: Pam [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 16, 2001 6:44 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GACHATHAM] Savannah City directories 1910-1927 Frank, Thanks so much for writing. We've been working on Jesse Newsom(e) for so long that we welcome a fresh perspective. The good news is that we know he's buried in Lyons City Cemetery, Lyons, Toombs Co., GA. The bad news is that his headstone has no dates. The cemetery has no records. There is no death certificate at the Toombs Co courthouse. The local monument supplier and funeral home don't have records before 1931. We don't even know if he died in GA or somewhere else because he's buried next to his brother-in-law who died down here in West Palm Beach, FL. Jesse's not on the Florida death index, nor the North Carolina death index (where his wife was living in 1927 before she and the children moved to Florida.) There are three remote possibilities on the GA death index. Thought if someone up there happened to be looking at directories, they might scope out a couple for us. I go to genealogical libraries in Palm Beach and St. Lucie Counties, if anybody needs anything from Florida. Pam Pamela Newsome Marietta Palm Beach County, Florida ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Johnston" <[email protected]> Rather than check 18 city directories for a missing person, it might be more productive to check the WPA books on the 3 largest cemeteries, Laurel Grove, Bonaventure, and Catholic.
