These are some names in Brickyard Cemetery on Hwy 204 (Abersorn Extension), about 3 miles west of I-95 in Chatham County. Since I have a lot of CARTERs buried there, was wondering if by checking on the WISE names I might find out something about the CARTER lines. WISE, Sr. William Alvin, b.12-18-1921, d. 5-12-1972 WISE, Ellie Horning, (private) WISE, Unknown (fem.), no dates WISE, William H, b. 1945, d. 1989 WISE, Jr. William H, b. 1970, d. 1997 WISE, Jr. Harris, b. 2-25-1923, d. 2-27-1993 WISE, Reona C., private WISE, Mary Etta, b. 9-24-1896, d. 12-7-1972 WISE, Sr. Harris, b. 7-25-1895, d. 4-16-1959 WISE, William Henry, b. 10-13-1862, d. 6-30-1942 Am wondering if the Reona C. WISE is for CARTER. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC
At the GA Historical Society, on the right-hand side of the lower room, just before you get to the microfilm readers. The ones on the shelf start in 1858 and go up to at least the 1950's with a few small gaps. frank J. -----Original Message----- From: juan456 [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2001 7:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GACHATHAM] Re Savannah Georgia City Directory CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE IN SAVANNAH I CAN FIND THE CITY DIRECTORIES FOR THE 1930S,,THANKS JOHN, IN ATLANTA ,GA -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, June 20, 2001 6:55 PM Subject: [GACHATHAM] Re Savannah Georgia City Directory > >Hello - > >In a review of the Savannah (Georgia) City Directory for the year 1890, I >noticed that the occupation for an ancestor was listed as > > BARKPR > >Would some kind list reader please advise me the full name of the occupation >and what duties, i.e. job, it performed. > >Your cooperation and assistance will be greatly appreciated. > >THANKS in advance for your time and efforts. > >Robert D. Savannah MORNING NEWS 31 October 1870 Death of P.G.M. James L.Haupt Our community was pained yesterday by the announcement of the death of one of the old citizens of Savannah, James L.Haupt, Esquire, which sad event took place on Sunday morning at 3 o'clock, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr.John W.Wilson, on York Street, near Jefferson. Mr.Haupt was a descendant of one of the old families which settled this portion of the South, and was a son of the late John Haupt. The deceased occupied many prominent positions, among which we would mention that of Secretary and Third Assistant Chief of the old Savannah Fire Company, Trustee of the Ltheran Church, City Assessor, and Past Grand Master of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Georgia, a position to which he was elected in 1866, after serving as D.G.M. from 1863. In 1867 he was elected Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of the United States. The four Lodges and Encampment of the Order of this city, and the members of the Grand Lodge of the State, will attend his funeral. Mr.Haupt was born on October 29th, 1816, and was consequently aged 54 years and one day at the time of his death. Our city, in the death of Mr.Haupt, has lost a useful citizen, one who was always willing to act well his part in whatever position he was called upon to fill, and who now, that he is dead, will be mourned by many friends. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Savannah MORNING NEWS 27 August 1861 OBITUARY Died, in this city, on the 19th instant, of Diptheria, MARY SUSANNAH POSEY, aged nine years, youngest daughter of the late B.B.Haupt.
My grandmother was Olive Haupt Wilson (B. 8-3-1871) married to John Wescott Rourk (B. 5-10-1865). Her mother was Catharine Marion Haupt (B. 12-12-1840) married to John Winburn Wilson (B.11-10-1925.) They were all from Chatham County. Thanks,it was valuable anyhow. I belong to Ancestry and had not looked recently. I spent the evening looking at interesting details I didn't know. Had you not made me look, I might not have seen them. Carolyn
You were right in assuming that it was free because when they post new sites they are supposed to be free for 10 days. I do belong to Ancestry.com but did have to login in order to view the Savannah Directories. I was able to find information on some of my families that I did not have before BUT, I have photo copies from the Georgia Historical Society of actual pages of the Savannah City Directory for those years with my main surname I research and when I put in that surname I get a "no records found" which would be incorrect. Happy Hunting, Marie
Hi! I have found this list by roundabout means, after using the SSDI, Ellis Island site, [email protected] list, etc. My first cousin never saw her father. Her mother "booted" him out of the house, not allowing him to even see his second child (my guess is the problem was hers, not his). Now this cousin of mine wants a lot to know more about her father. It seems fairly certain he is deceased. Anders/Andres/Andrew HETLAND was born, perhaps around April 1903, in Norway (something like Haugestund -- I have the exact spelling at home). I only absolutely know that he was born before 1909. He and his first wife settled in Pennsylvania. He appears to be the Andrew HETLAND found on the SSDI, that died in Georgia in 1964. There even seem to be descendants listed in the phonebooks in the area. We are going to pursue these ones. We were provided, kindly, with the GA Death Index for Andres HETLAND. Why am I writing you? 1. To see if anyone is researching this name, or is a relative, friend, etc., of anyone of this name in the area, and can help us. 2. To see if anyone has any kind of database or access to a database that would list Andres and maybe even his second family, etc., in Chatham County, GA. Ellis Island lists an Anders HETLAND as a crew member on two ships, the Kinghorn, and the Jan, in 1918 and in 1924. He served at sea for 5 years. One of the points of departure was Philadelphia, PA, but they went to Cuba and to Italy, and wound up at New York. Thanks for any help you can possibly provide. Vince Summers
When I posted, I thought it was a free site, but when I checked it from a different e-mail, I realize that it isn't free and that you have to be a member of Ancestry.com to access the directories. My apologies to everyone on the list. Susan Marshall
