They started in 1890 for Savannah, but all GA birth certificates are only available to a select group (child, parents, etc.) unless death is proven by certificate. Would SKS please tell me what year this newspaper began publication? Thanks. Jim Hills Houston TX
Frank J - Received your response to my inquiry and greatly appreciate the information. Would it be correct on my part to assume that BIRTH CERTIFICATES also start about 1854 for Chatham County (Savannah) Georgia? If not, could you please advise me as to the earliest date for which Birth Certificates are available in Chatham County. Your cooperation and assistance are once again greatly appreciated. Robert D. Lou Dean - Hello: For your information, I have received through the postal mail Death Certificates from the Savannah Georgia office of Vital Statistics without any problem whatsoever. However, these Death Certificates relate to deaths in 1940 and 1943 and subsequent. It is my understanding that Death Certificates may, also, be obtained for a fee of $10.00 direct from the following: Georgia Department of Human Resources Vital Records Service Room 217-H 47 Trinity Avenue, SW Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Robert Peterson
I believe the first ***City of Savannah*** death certificates start about 1854. Keep in mind that compliance was not 100% and Savannah did not include all of Chatham County. Also, these death certificates DO NOT include family data. The fields are: Age, sex, race, nativity, marital status, occupation, Date of death, Place of death, disease causing death, duration of disease, place of burial, name of undertaker, physician. And, as always, they were not filled out by the deceased so everything except the death info is suspect. In 1919 the State of GA started their system with better forms. There were earlier state attempts at death certificates, but compliance was spotty at best. It is my understanding that the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Vital Records Service, Atlanta, Georgia, has Death Certificates subsequent to January 1919. However, for earlier records relating to Chatham County (Savannah) Georgia, the Vital Records Office in Chatham County may be of assistance. Could you please advise how far prior to January 1919, the Vital records Office in Chatham County (Savannah), Georgia may have death certificates. Your cooperation and assistance will be appreciated. Hello, A relative of mine died in Chatham County in 1937. I found him listed in the Georgia Death Index and sent my $10 (along with the certificate # and other information) for the certificate. My letter (but not of course the $10) was returned along with a reply that the individual was NOT listed in the Georgia Death Index. I wrote again and sent a copy of the page of the Death Index in which the person was listed, highlighting his name. They again returned my letter and the copy of the page along with the same reply that the person is not listed in the Death Index. (I don't know what can be the problem, since I have written for many other Death Certificates and have received them.) Anyway, I wonder whether Chatham County has and will send copies of the death certificate of a person who died there in 1937? Does anyone know, and if so, what is the address and the cost? Any help would be greatly appreciated. LouDean

Any Robertsons, Haupts or Lindners buried there?
Yes, this is the same family! This is the first information I've received on Laura's family...I only knew that she was from Effingham County...this is very exciting!! Is this part of your family? If so, and you're interested in the Fleetwood family, I would be happy to forward "lots" of research that I have compiled. If not, and you run across any other information that connects to this line, I would just love to hear from you. Thank you so much for writing...I look forward to hearing from you...again! Re: The Index of Surnames at GHS The Index does not capture all of the names featured in the SMN. I routinely find 'missing' people and events when I survey the papers, page by page. But the Index is a dandy place to start.
At the GA Hist. Society there are indexes to Savannah newspapers. The ones covering the 1800s have a "Surnames" section that is just perfect for finding your folks. Toward the beginning of the 1900s, the indexes drop the "Surnames" section. The GHS also has the newspapers on microfilm as does the Public Library.
