    3. Bill, I just visited your web site and it's very well done. The history of the police force is interesting. My gg grandfather, George J. SMITH, served in the early 1870s, so he's not listed on your site, but I enjoyed looking at it. Thanks for sharing. It seems to be certain folks gets information > and what ever I ask no one seems to know anything about the family. They did > live there, was poor, and I am sure never did anything to be remember but > they did exsist. The way that I look at our early ancestors, they are the seeds of our existance that were planted and tended with loving care, tilling and clearing the land for future generations to come, to have a better life than they had. They were very brave people to leave their families and come down south to a wilderness to settle the area. They were very hard workers, who were not afraid to work hard, and take care of large families. Just imagine how it must have been to take care of such large families...I don't think many of us would be very rich, if we had anywhere from 8 to 12 children, to take care of today. I am sure that they were active in their churches, communities or special meetings of Spiritual guidance to worship and commune with their God or Higher Power. I highly respect and have the highest amount of admiration for all our early ancestors...they were too busy working, to write histories...I am sure they had many interesting stories to tell. That is most likely how they chose one representative to represent the group as a "Whole." Eleanor >

    1. Re: [GACHATHAM] Savannah Police Department
    2. Hello: I have noted that recently there have been numerous e-mail postings relating to the Savannah Georgia Police Department in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Several messages mention "books" applicable to the Savannah Police Department in the indicated time frame. I am very much interested in the Savannah Police Department in this time frame. It would be appreciated if the applicable list members would forward to me the complete title and author of these books in order that I may attempt to obtain these publications either on the basis of a library loan or as a purchase. My interest centers on the following individual who I believe was a member of the Savannah Georgia Police Department in the late 1800s and early 1900s: ANTONIO MATTHEW DOMINICK If anyone having access to the above indicated books could do a look-up for me of the name Antonio Matthew Dominick, I would truly appreciate hearing from you at your convenience. Your cooperation and assistance will be appreciated. And, many thanks for your time and efforts. Peter e-mail address: rpeter8370@AOL.com

    2. Just a FYI for Police info. seekers: The Savannah City Directories list Police Officers in the front of the books. I have seen this from 1880's to early 1900's. I saw this because I was looking for my GG Grandfather who was a Fireman, unfortunately they don't list all the fire fighters, mainly officers. Good news for Police seekers, they list all the Police Dept. Also at the GA. Historical Society I have seen a file of the early Police Dept. and they have great pictures and references. 3. Here are a few more ideas: - City directories for each year - More indexing of cemeteries - Marriage and death records - Links to Civl War rosters There's probably a ton of things we all can do or thing about, but staying on the list and staying in touch is a good one. . . . like our meeting at Tubby's over Labor Day. :-) Bob Carter Greensboro, NC
