Any assistance in finding parents for my g2gfather would be very, very much appreciated!! This is all I know about him: THOMAS S. JORDAN (orJORDON/JOURDAN/JOURDAIN/etc.) 1832 - Born - 3 January, Macon, Bibb county, Georgia (according to his obit). Both parents born in GA (according to later census). 1832-1847 - ??????????? 1847 - apprenticeship in "the Advertiser" office (this is from his newspaper obit in Ashland, AL - I am assuming that this means the Montgomery Advertizer) 1850 - I can not find him on a census. 1852 - foreman of the job office that printed the Code of Alabama (Montgomery) 1859 - 10 October, at Wedowee, Alabama, m. Mary Creel, b. 27 February, 1838, Carroll county, GA; daughter of Jordan Creel(s/o George Creel, who was a descendant of John Creel of VA) and Mary(Polly) White (d/o of Zachariah White of MA). 1860 - Randolph Co., AL, Wedowee, Dwelling 17: T.G.W. Jourdan 28 yrs, male, Printer, born in GA, married within the yr Mary " 22 yrs, female, HW, born in GA, married within the yr Cinthia " 38 yrs, female, HW, born in SC FACT: Thomas G.W. Jordan m. Cynthia SMITH in Harris County, GA, July 14, 1853. FACT: Thomas S. and Mary Creel married in 1859. Apparently, either (1) Thomas S. and Thomas G.W. are the same man, and he is a bigamist OR (2) the man listed in the census above is Thomas S., not Thomas G. W., and T. S. is living in T. G. W.'s home with both his wife and T.G.W.'s wife - this being the case, where is Thomas G.W.??? WHO is Thomas G.W.??? Widowed father of Thomas S. who remarried? Cinthia died in the summer of 1860 after a 2 mos. "fever", and was listed as "married", rather than "widow" in the mortality book, so Thomas G.W. was still alive in 1860. 1860 - July 21 - son born in Randolph county, Alabama; Joseph Wiley Jordan. He practiced medicine in Ashland, Clay county, Alabama until his death in 1951 - also served in state legislature in 1930s and was associated with newspapers. 1862 - son, William Dotson, born - d. 1915 (Thomas and Mary adopted a daughter, Mary Dison, during this period, who died at age 7) Civil War activity - Thomas was a courier for the Confederacy between West Point, GA and Talladega, AL 1872-1876 - Worked at newspaper in Opelika, AL 1876-1878 - Published The Coosa News at Goodwater, Alabama with his sons. Coosa county history has a Thomas Jordan listed as a long-term resident of Marble Valley in NW Coosa county - is this my Thomas S., or his father, or one of the other Thomas Jordans? 1878 - moved to Ashland, Clay county, Alabama. Published the second newspapers ever in the town of Ashland. 1894 - 9:15 PM, 6 May, died in Ashland as a result of sepsis following a rooster bite. Given that he was in good health prior, his obit would probably have not been pre-written, so I dare not rely on it too much - but it is, in many cases, all I have. Thomas S. was a Baptist, a Mason - had a Mason's funeral - was active in politics - obit was in the Ashland paper and also in The People's Party Advocate (Democrat). He was known as and referred to as "Uncle" by political friends. He also owned and/or worked as a printer for many newspapers in GA/AL and other southern states, according to his obit. His son, Dr. Joseph Wiley Jordan, has a bio in ALABAMA AND HER PEOPLE which gives no genealogy past Thomas and Mary. Family history has an American Indian somewhere in his lines.
