    2. Candace Gravelle
    3. In connection with researching Abbeville County, South Carolina families who went to Heard County and Carroll County Georgia area ca 1848-1850 timeframe, found the following information on the HANVEY family of Abbeville County, SC who moved to Carroll County, GA by 1850 with some of the family moving to Heard County, GA by 1860: >From "Abstracts of Old Ninety-Six and Abbeville District Wills and Bonds (publ.1950 by Pauline Young) an estate record is noted for William Hanvey in 1849: " Estate of William Hanvey July 1, 1849 - - Estate administered by Wm. Bradley, Jas. McCaslin. A. Kennedy bound unto David Lesley, Ordinary of Abbeville District, the sum of $600. Susan Hanvey, wife. On Jan 7, 1851, Susan Hanvey of Carroll County, Georgia appointed George Hanvey of Abbeville Dist, SC as her attorney. Settlement was made Jan 21, 1851. Present was Susan Hanvey, widow; absent parties/heirs noted as: Thomas, James, Edward, William, Oliver, Wright, Mary A. and Samuel T. Hanvey. These are some excerpts from an article in "The Heritage of Abbeville County, South Carolina" (publ. 1995 by Don Mills and the Wallsworth Publ. Co.) " William C. Hanvey Family - - -William C. Hanvey lived his entire life in Abbeville County, SC. He was born on July 1791 and died on March 14, 1849....He married Susan Carter on March 31, 1815. Susan was born on May 18, 1794 in Virginia and died May 26, 1863 in Carroll County, Georgia.....William C. Hanvey was a farmer and planter of modest means as was indicated by the amount of personal property listed in his estate papers. Nothing much is known of William C. Hanvey, but there is his family Bible which survives. The Bible records William C. and Susan's marriage date and chronicles the births and deaths of his children and some of his grandchildren. Susan Carter's parents are unknown......Susan moved to Carroll County, Georgia by the summer of 1850 and was living in the house next to her son Thomas Hanvey. Her occupation was listed as seamstress in the 1850 census and her younger children Wright Joshua Hanvey, Maryann Hanvey and Samuel Teague Hanvey were still living at home. By 1860, Susan's children had all left home and she was living with her son Thomas Hanvey. The civil war was a bitter time for the Hanveys. The family were avid supporters of the Southern cause and almost all served and many died in it's service. In fact, one son, George McDuffie Hanvey, is said to be the first person in Georgia to volunteer his services to Governor Brown of that state and even before that he has offered his service and that of his militia company, the Newnan Guards, to the Governor of South Carolina. There is a copy of a letter to Governor W.H. Gist of South Carolina dated Nov 8, 1860. The letter was dated before South Carolina became the first to secede from the Union. Ultimately, George Hanvey's company did become the first to be accepted in the service of Georgia, Company A 1st Georgia Infantry (Ramsey's). The following letter written by Susan Carter Hanvey just three months before her death details some of her feelings about the war. In the letter, Susan speaks of the many deaths in the family, and it is ironic that the tragedy is not complete, because her son Thomas Hanvey and son-in-law William A. Walker, both of whom she speaks of in the letter, were to be killed later in the war. The letter is presented here just as it was written, with no changes either in spelling or punctuation: Georgia, Carroll County Jan 14, 1863 Dear Son, I take the pleasure of answering your kind letter that came to hand some time since though sickness and death has kept me from answering it sooner. I was proud to hear from you and family though grieved to hear of Susan's death but believe me we have nothing but trouble in our land. I also have the painful task of chronicling the death of your brother William. He died the 7th of the month after lingering for several months, he had been in service some 19 months. Ned my children are nearly all dead and I am left hear to see all the trouble of this unholy war. Your connections here are all gone. Siss old man is gone he is the Capt. of his company and is a great deal thought of by all his men and officers. He has been home on sick furlough though has been gone again and is now at Vicksburg, Miss. Siss is left with three little children, though William left her plenty to live on he hires a negro woman to stay with her she has a good home to stay at and is doing well he hopes. I am living at Thos. the connextion are all well. She sent her best love to you and children and says write to her. I want you to write to me soon with all things this leaves me in tolerable good health and hope it may find you and the children in good health and doing well. Excuse a short letter as I had no news to write. Write to me soon and often and be sure to come to see me one time more but my best love and wishes for you and the children. Your mother until death, Susan Hanvey To E.L.H. Edward Lain Hanvey Abbeville District, South Carolina P.S. Direct your letters to Enon Grove, Heard County Georgia and I will be sure to get them as that mail is taken to Sisses house. S. Hanvey There is no doubt that the deaths of her children weighed heavily on Susan. The additional blow of her oldest son Thomas being killed on April 4, 1863 probably hastened her death which occurred on May 26, 1863.
