    1. [GACARROL] Benefield, Joe, N.J., Hardie, Bill, Susie . . .
    2. Kemis Massey
    3. Hello, Last year in July one of my cousins, Madge Evans of Lagrange (Troup County), GA, past away. Madge was the only child of Fred and Dessie Benefield Evans. Madge had never married. She raised show dogs. In the last years before her death, her best friend's daughter always took care of Madge's dogs. She agreed to take the dogs upon Madge's death. Madge left her everything. Angel being the wonderful person that she was, contacted my Aunt and ask if we would come get the personal things as she felt they needed to go to family. We were the only family she knew to contact. I took my mom and her two sisters to Lagrange for personal stuff. Because I've been working on the family history for a couple years, I was given the task of identifying the pictures and other things. I have sorted the pictures in family piles (I've looked at these pics probably 20 times and see a different person each time). Now for the reasons I sent this email. First, I found a small leather bound notebook. At first glance I thought it belonged to a child, with the scribbling and drawings. A second look determined it was a ledger. . for plowing and how much they were paid. It should where they bought meat and sold vegetables. Some of the dates ranged from Jan 1907 to Oct 1908. But the jewel in the book is the name and dates of birth of the Benefield girls (this would be the same info one would find in a family Bible.) Second, bring me to the list of names I found on some of the pictures. The dates range from 1956 - 2000. I know some of the pictures are older than that, but they are not dated so I can not say when they were taken. Pictures are of: The Benefield Girls: Mattie, Susie, Lena, Eula, and Dessie ages 2 – 9 (?) As adults Sue Kelly (?), Lena Gibbs, Eula Cash, and Dessie Evans BENEFIELD, JOE BENEFIELD, N.J. BENEFIELD, HARDIE BENEFIELD, BILL (UNCLE) BENEFIELD, MATTIE BENEFIELD, SUSIE BENEFIELD, LENA BENEFIELD, EULA BENEFIELD, DESSIE BENEFIELD, BESS BENEFIELD, BUTCH CONLEY, JEAN CASH, EULA EVANS, DESSIE EVANS, FRED GIBBS, LENA GIBBS, HARRY NASH, CRAIG NASH, RONNIE BOX, BERNICE AGE 13 1958 BOX, BENNY AGE 7 1958 ANDREWS, DANNY ANDREWS, DONNA appears to be the wife of Danny ANDREWS, JIM ANDREWS, NELL HOLLAND, MATT JOHNSON, AARON CARR - birth pictures of twins are dated Mar 2000 CARR – picture Christmas card 2000 If these are members of your family email me at: [email protected] as I want the pictures given back to the correct family. 1. [GACARROL] LIFE-ONE HUNDRED AND TWO YEARS AGO.
    2. Kemis Massey
    3. from another email list: "I thought this might give some of us a better understanding of the lives of our ancestors... Blessings, Bob RE Speese ONE HUNDRED AND TWO YEARS AGO................... >From a book called "When My Grandmother Was a Child" by Leigh W. Rutledge, which begins, "In the summer of 1900, when my grandmother was a child..." The average life expectancy in the United States was forty-seven. Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was ten mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the US was twenty-two cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home. Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. The five leading causes of death in the US were:1.Pneumonia and influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke. The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Only men could vote. One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist , "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. Punch-card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census. Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were about 230 reported murders in the US annually." happy family hunting, kemis Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie

    1. [GACARROL] James Roberts family
    2. michelle ganus taggart
    3. I have been trying to straighten out my Roberts line. According to my information, my William Franklin Ganus married a Mary Matilda Roberts (abt. 1879 or 1880), whose parents were Mary Meadows and James (M or W?) Roberts. I have been looking through wills and probates and have learned that there was more than one James Roberts in the area and I've become increasingly confused as I try to work my way through these documents. Is there anyone else working on this family---or one of the James Roberts families? If so, I would really like to "talk" with you about what you know about these family(s) and would of course be glad to share what I have with you. thanks, Michelle Ganus Taggart shellt @xmission.com

    1. [GACARROL] BROCK & DAVIS, Carroll co. GA, 1800s
    2. Richard
    3. David N. Brock, b. 7 Jun 1829, d. 17 Mar 1899 in Texas married Mary E. Davis, b. 19 Nov 1831, d. 6 Jun 1910 in Texas, abt. 1850 likely in Carroll county GA. He was a C.S.A. soldier from that county. He is thought to have had parents William Brock and Mary E. Davis likely married in Carroll county GA. William obviously must have died prior to 1846, Mary re-marrying George Watson on 12 Nov 1846 in Carroll county GA. She, without William but with some of her children, appears in the same household in the 1850 Carroll county census. Perhaps George had also died shortly after their marriage. Mary's family had moved to Henderson county Texas prior to the WBtheS, her elder brother William having been a C.S.A. soldier from that county and later being its sheriff for several terms. He had lost his right arm in battle and had attained the rank of sergeant in the C.S.A.. He is buried in Henderson county as are many of his other family members. David and Mary, along with their adult children and many other unrelated families moved to the newly formed Cullman county AL in late 1800s. Several of their children had married prior to moving to AL. Their only daughter, Sarah Jane had married Berry T. Rains, having one son Robert, but she died from a fire prior to the family move to AL. Mary was the daughter of George R. and Jane (unk) Davis. He died in Feb 1863 but it is not known if as a result of the War Between the States. Jane had moved to Texas and died there 23 Feb 1886 where she is buried iin Henderson county. I am seeking earlier information of each of these earliest persons and families above indicated. Surely I am not the only Carroll county family researcher that is working on any or all of these family members. -- Richard Brock 6726 River Mill Drive Klein (Houston), Texas 77379-4161 ph: 281 251 8682 e/m: [email protected]

    1. [GACARROL] Paynes in Douglas/Carroll counties, GA
    2. Seeking descendants of Fleming Caleb PAYNE, b. 20 Jan 1854, who died between 1913 and 1920 in either Carroll or Douglas County, Georgia. Burial place is unknown. Would like to share family information. Our family called him "Uncle Cale." He was a Baptist minister and farmer and lived in the Fairplay area of Carroll County. History books list his preaching assignments in Carroll County as Bethel Baptist (1892-93), Mt. Pleasant Baptist (1892-1897), Abilene Baptist (1901), and Consolation Baptist (1912-1913). Married first to Ella Williams (in 1875) and second to Retta Exom or Elam (in 1897). Children, all with first wife, were: Charles R. Payne Robert Homer Payne m. Fannie Tyson Roxy V. Payne m. Steve Clawer William Jasper Payne m. Jewel Johnston John Payne m. Mollie Pope George Washington Payne m. (1) Lula Beatrice Noles and (2) Cora Geneva Griffis Rilla Payne m. Alton Brock Joseph J. Payne m. Birtie Freeman Some of these children are known to have lived in Douglas County. William Jasper Payne was the mayor of Douglasville in 1933. Cale was the twin brother of my great-grandfather, Joseph Joshua Payne who married Louisa Elizabeth (Lou) Boyd. Joseph and Lou are buried at Powell's Chapel in Carroll County. Here is Cale's story as we have it so far: Cale, a twin, was born Jan. 20, 1854, in Monroe County, Tennessee, to William Jasper Payne and Mary Ann (Polly) Wood(s). His parents were married Jan. 21, 1852 in Monroe County and lived in the Sweetwater area in the northeast section of the county. Mary Woods Payne was the daughter of Joel Wood(s) and Mary Sellers whose ancestors came from Pennsylvania to Tennessee in the late 1700s. Joel Wood was the son of Mary Price and the Rev. Richard Wood, a Baptist minister of some renown in Eastern Tennessee. William Jasper Payne is thought to be the son of Fleming and Evaline Payne who also lived in Monroe County until they moved to Whitfield County, Georgia, sometime before 1860. Cale had four brothers and sisters by 1860 ... an older sister, Elizabeth, b. 1852; his twin brother Joseph (listed as Joel in the 1860 Monroe census); Rachel Saphronia, b. May 1856; and James C., b. 1858. Sometime after June 1860 when the Monroe census was taken, Cale's parents moved to Carroll County. The reason being, probably, that his Woods grandparents had already moved to Carroll between 1850 and 1860. Joel Woods, Mary Payne's father, may have been gravely ill as records show his will was made in late 1860 and recorded, following his death, in October of 1860. So the Payne family move from Tennessee to Georgia was probably made between July and September of that year. Whether they intended to move here permanently is unknown, but stay they did, and settled in the Fairplay area of Carroll County. In May of 1861, Cale's father, William Jasper Payne, joined the Civil War effort, enlisting with Co. I, 19th Ga. Regt., the "Villa Rica Gold Diggers." His uncle, Joel Woods, Jr., and cousin, William Woods, also fought with this unit. Within the next year, Cale's father was gone --- the victim of a fatal bout with the measles while he was serving with the Confederate Army in Richmond, Virginia. Joel and William Woods also perished in the Civil War. Cale's father, William Jasper Payne, was buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. In the meantime, back in Carroll County, Cale's mother gave birth to another daughter, Hannah Jane, born about 1862. In 1863, Cale's mother joined the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, which was then in Carroll County and now is in Douglas. A Nancy Jane Woods, thought to be Cale's aunt, the wife of his Uncle Nathan Woods, also may have joined a few weeks earlier. It is not known how long Mary continued her membership at this church. Cale's mother apparently was extremely poor and could not afford to keep all her children at home. So she "farmed" them out to other families. By 1870, Cale and his brother, James, were living with the Levi Turner family as farm workers, and Joseph was living with William and Elizabeth Williams. The three girls, Elizabeth, 17, Rachel, 14, and Hannah, 8, remained at home with their mother. By 1880, Cale and all his brothers and sisters were married and living in Carroll County. Elizabeth Payne married James F. Williams in 1870, Rachel Payne married James Knox Polk Richards in 1875, James C. Payne married Mary Elizabeth Pope in 1877, Joseph Joshua married Louisa Boyd in 1877, Hannah Jane Payne married James Thomas Maroney (year unknown), Cale, himself, married Ella Williams in 1875, and, perhaps assuming responsibility for his mother's welfare, provided a home for her. All the brothers and sisters lived near one another in 1880, except Rachel, who lived in Douglas County. Joseph and Cale had both followed in the footsteps of their preacher-great-grandfather, Richard Wood. But, while Cale continued in the Baptist tradition, Joseph became a circuit-riding Methodist minister. Tragically, Joseph died with typhoid fever in September of 1891, right on the heels of the death of his infant son. Gooly Ross Payne, in June of that same year. In 1895, Rachel Payne Richards' husband put her and their six children on a boat bound for Texas and they settled in Shelby County near the Louisiana border. Cale apparently missed his sister, as he is said to have been a frequent visitor in the Richards home in Texas. Rachel and James Richards' children's descendants still live there. Both Rachel and James, and several of their children, are buried at Sardis Cemetery in Shelby County. Cale's mother, Mary Payne, applied for a widow's pension and was granted one in 1895. She received $60 per year for 1895, 1896 and 1897, and was deceased by 1898. We do not know exactly when she died or where she is buried. Cale's wife, Ella, also died sometime before 1897, and his brother, James, also died in 1897. Cale remarried Retta (Henrietta) Exom or Elam. My aunt, Milie Payne White, said of Ella that she was a wonderful mother to Cale's children and treated them as if they were her own. She described Cale as a very sweet man, and very emotional. Another relative said he seemed to take all the burdens of his congregation upon his own shoulders. Whatever the case and for whatever reason, this sweet, emotional man took his own life sometime between 1913 and 1920, and Retta is shown in the 1920 census as a widow, living alone. She is thought to have died in 1935, according to Georgia death records. Cale's death shook the family badly, and no explanation of his act is known to this day. Of all the children, these final dispositions are known: ELIZABETH Payne Williams died in 1928 and is buried at Powell's Chapel Methodist Church cemetery in Carroll Co. beside her husband, James F. Williams JOSEPH JOSHUA Payne died Sept. 30, 1891 and also is buried at Powell's Chapel beside his wife, Lousa Elizabeth Boyd. FLEMING CALEB's burial place is unknown. RACHEL SAPHRONIA Payne Richards died Aug. 2, 1922, and is buried at Sardis Cemetery in Center, Texas beside her husband, James Richards. JAMES C. Payne died 23 July 1897 and is buried at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Carroll Co. beside his wife, Mary Elizabeth Pope Payne Richardson. HANNAH JANE Payne Maroney died in 1911 and is buried in Etowah County, Alabama. I would love to meet descendants of Cale and his children in hopes of finding out if family stories told to them reveal anything of the family's earlier life in Tennessee. Research in this area is proving to be extremely difficult. Also would like to find out where the descendants are living and how they have fared. I will be happy to share family information from my line through Joseph Joshua Payne. Most of us are still in the Atlanta area. Thanks, Judy Fowler Kilgore Newnan, GA

    3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/carroll.htm We have a new Bible on-line! I've posted it in both Carroll and Warren County. Linda, this is a wonderful addition, and especially since you added some notes about this family. I don't think we have the Sharp Family cemetery on-line. If you would type up the information that you have and even the "possible" burials (just mark them as "no tombstone"] so everyone will know this is just a possibility. Then maybe others will add their family information. This would hold true for any cemetery in Carroll Co. Please add as much info on the "relationships" for everyone that you can. Thanks. Virginia

    3. While it will be later on in the Fall before I have time to update my webpage that contains the muster rolls of the 1st Georgia Reserves (Fannin's), I'm delighted to be able to let you know that I now have the original enlistment muster rolls for Companies A, B, C, & D. These original muster rolls contains some vital genealogical data not normally found in the men's military records if they were in the regular army. Each company muster roll contains the following: (1) man's name (2) rank (3) date & place of enlistment (4) amount of time of enlistment - duration of the war (5) age (6) height (feet & inches) (7) complexion (8) color of eyes (9) color of hair (10) occupation and (11) place of residence at the time of enlistment. I'm especially thrilled to be able to learn where they were residing at the time of enlistment because it will be invaluable to those of us doing genealogical research and hopefully will lead us in the right direction for tracking down our roots. Best regards, Jane Ashley Benson http://www.geocities.com/csareserve1/index.html

    2. Hi -- I received the following e-mail from a contact in Carroll Co. today (6/18/02) in response to the posting below to the Carroll Co., GA-L in January 2002. "Valerie: I had a response to the Arrington-Davis Query from a former neighbor who is now in a retirement home. She knew the Davis family. They did live on Main Street which is now Colledge Street. (Route 166). They then lived on McElroy Street. Neither house is still there. They moved to Atlanta after 1930. One of the girls graduated high school in 1929 and the other one in 1930. Vesta married Willard Copeland but they separated. She married again but she did not know to whom. Velma married a Golden from Bremen but they also separated. That was all she could remember. Hope this helps. Helen" Good Luck!! 1. [GACARROL] Henderson County NC Estate Records 1838 - 1900
    2. I am posting the following for the author of a new genealogy book. These are records that have not been available before now. Henderson Co.,NC was formed in 1838, and in 1861 Transylvania Co., NC was created out of Henderson Co., NC. So abstract for Henderson Co., NC from 1838 to 1900, and Transylvania Co., NC from 1838 to 1861 when Transylvania Co., was still part of Henderson Co., NC If you will email her names you are looking for she will tell you if the book will be beneficial to you. ------------snip------------- These valuable records have been in Raleigh NC since 1960 and never available in any printed form before now. Estate records, or probate records, were generated when a person died without a will. The court settled the deceased estate and in doing so generated a tremendous amount of documentation. These documents usually listed the widow/widower, heirs (children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters), sometimes where the heirs lived, names of slaves who were sold to settle the estate, dower issues, inventories and accounts. In fact, estate records give much more information than a will. I have published an abstract of these records. There are over 750 su r names listed and over 5000 names. The amount of information is truly phenomenal! Click on the URL below to review the book and for ordering. If you will email the name you are looking for I will tell you if the book will be beneficial to you. <A HREF="http://ksummers55.home.mchsi.com/">http://ksummers55.home.mchsi.com/</A> Kathleen Summers Her email address is --- <[email protected]>

    2. Hi, For the 1827 Lottery John Eldridge (illegit) was living in Captain Pearson's District in Twiggs County, Ga, won Dist. 9, Lot 85 in Carroll County, GA. Jane Elridge (widow-RS) was living in Captain Pearson's District in Twiggs County, GA, won Dist. 1, Lot #135 in Carroll County, Ga. However, about this time a Reverend Peter Eldridge and a Daniel Eldridge moved to Meriwether County, GA and are on the 1830 Census. Trying to find a connection to these two deeds in Carroll County, GA. Did they not move and sell to someone else? And how or why did Reverend Peter Eldridge and Daniel Eldridge move to Meriwether County, GA about this time? Is there a connection to these families and these lottery winnings? Thank you.
