    1. [GACARROL] Boyd land purchases/Meriwether Co., GA/1830-1923
    2. These were taken from the Grantee Index, from 1827 to the present, books located in the office of the Superior Court Judge, Meriwether County Courthouse. For those who are just beginning, the Grantee is the person who received, or purchased, the land. The Grantor is the person who sold the land. Since I was looking for specific Boyds, I didn't write down the acreage and land lots for the first few, until I realized how helpful this information might be to others. I did write down the deed book and page number, the district and date of filing/record. The first entry is the earliest recorded Boyd transaction, that is, the first Boyd who bought land in Meriwether County. Many of these Boyds moved to Carroll county, died and are buried there. In most cases, the date of instrument (the day the two persons actually sat down at the table and made the deal) was a few days before the deed was filed. However, in some cases, it was years before. Again, I did not get all the dates of instrument. When running the letters/numbers together would be confusing, I put a dash (-) between them. But most of the books are abbreviated (i.e., J434 would be book J, page 434). I hope this may help some of you (like me) who are trying to separate all the different Boyds in Meriwether, most of whom came from Newberry Dist., SC. Mine specifically is the family of Robert Boyd, who married Rosannah Stewart, and died in Meriwether County in 1846. Most, if not all of Robert's children who were with him in Meriwether, moved to Carroll. You may find copies of these original records at the Meriwether Courthouse, on microfilm at the Georgia Archives, or most likely on microfilm at your local LDS Family History Center. The deed book and page number should point the way. The first two entries will show the format I used. Happy hunting and good luck! -- Judy Kilgore BOYD, John, purchased land in the 10th Dist., from LEVERETT, Duncan, recorded/filed 25 Dec 1830, Book A, p. 414 BOYD, John, purchased land in the 9th Dist., from HANNER, James A., rec orded/filed 10 Mar 1834, Book C, p. 165 BOYD, Milton, purchased land in the 8th Dist. from MOORE, William, r/f 8 Sep 1834, C353 BOYD, ROBERT, 9th Dist, from BUTLER, John (estate sale), r/f 25 Sep 1834, C377. Date of instrument on this transaction was 7 Jan 1834. The land was an entire land lot (no. 269, 202.5 acres) and Robert purchased it for $250. John Butler of Elbert County drew the land in the 1827 land lottery and it was originally in Troup County. John died and the land was put up for public sale by Martha Butler, his wife and executrix, as ordered by the court, and Robert was the highest bidder. This transaction also may be recorded in Elbert County probate records as part of John Butler's estate, as that is the way the deed begins ... "Georgia, Elbert County ..." However, it was recorded in Meriwether since that is where the land was located. In Robert's will, this is the land he described as leaving to his heirs ... "Lot. No. 269 in the Ninth District, formerly Troup now Meriwether ..." The land is located in the Upper Ninth District, in the extreme northeastern corner of the county, almost adjacent to Pike County. I have a copy of this deed if anyone wants one. Most of my Boyds were in that section of Meriwether County (upper 9th). It is near Mt. Carmel Methodist Church. If so, the John Sr. above would probably be John "Waggoner Jack" Boyd, the colorful rascal described in George Hugh Boyd's book, "Our Boyd Family, Allied families ...." and whose family connected to the DeGraffenried line.) Mine were gone by 1860, having moved to Carroll County, but apparently some still owned land there up until the late 1800s. I believe the Boyd/Edge transactions involve Carroll County Boyds. -- JK

    3. Dianne, Hi. I have some tombstone pictures from Carroll county and Douglas county. I don't have them scanned yet, but I'd be willing to scan what I have and send them to you for the project. I'll have to dig them out of my files, and I won't have time to do so until after the weekend, so if your son can wait a week or so, I'll be more than happy to share. 3. I am Dianne Wood from Coweta County GA. My son is attempting to complete his Eagle project for boy scouts. He is taking pictures of every church in Coweta Co, and becuase I know all the backroads for 5 counties around, is doing some other counties too. We asked for and received freespace from Rootsweb. Ken Johnson from the gagenweb has graciously and thankfully agreed to help me (he's doing it cause I couldn't) put the photos on the website, and upload files. If you have any pictures of churches, wide angle of cemeteries, or any tombstones you would like to donate he would be most appreciative. (you receive credit). He has also taken pictures of barns, houses, and such. And hopefully we can incorporate these into the site. C, 34th Regiment GA Volunteers ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Chris Karr [email protected] August 24, 2003, 4:57 pm 1. Affidavit to be Made by the Widow State of Georgia County of Paulding In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the County of Paulding, Mrs. S.J. KARR, who, being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of G.B. Karr who as a soldier in the service of the Confederate States or Georgia State troops, and served as a member of Company C of the 34 Regiment of Ga Volunteers, that he enlisted in said service on or about the 13 day of May, 1862 and was in the Army up to May 1865. That while in the Army, he was on the 1 day of August, 1863. He died in Jan. 1899 on the 27th day. The effects of Injury occurred while in Service, in August 1863. He had started to his Command and at the R.R. Crossing at Powell Station in Coweta Co., Ga, he was struck by the Engine and badly hurt. His right arm was broken. His skull was fractured from which injury he never really recovered. He went back to his command but was never able to do but litle Service. He complained al the time of his heart. Was never able to do but little labor of any kind and I am satisfied that the injury he received was the cause of his death. Deponent further swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier during his term of service in the Army, and that she has never married since his death; that she became his wife on the 12th day of Jan 1854 and that she was born in the State of Ga and since said date she has not lived in any other State or locality. Deponent, as the widow of said deceased soldier husband applies for the pension provided by Act of General Assembly of Georgia, approved December 23rd, 1890, for the pension year ending February 15th, 1898, and herewith tenders the proof of her right to receive the pension granted by said Act. Sworn to and subscribed before me, this the 21st day of Dec. 1899, F.P. Henderson Post Office Ordinary. Signed, S.J. Karr (Her mark). 2.Power of Attorney, State of Georgia, Paulding County I, Mrs. S.J. Karr hereby authorize R.A. Chiles, Ordy. of Paulding Co., to receive and receipt for the pension allowed and request that he remit same to me at Dallas, Ga. By hand. Witness my hand and seal this 28th day of July 1902. Executed in presence of R.A. Chiles, Ordy. Mrs. S.J. Karr (her mark). 3. Certificate of Ordinary of the County of Applicant's Residence State of Georgia, County of Carroll. I, S.J. Brown, Ordinary in and for said County of Carroll, State of Georgia, hereby certify that I am acquainted with Mrs. S.J. Karr, the applicant for a pension in this case, and know from my own knowledge (or from positive proof presented to me by reputable witnesses)that she resides in this County, and that she has resided in the State of Georgia continuously and has not lived out of the state. I also certify that the witnesses, to wit: Jasper Williams, W.F. Couch and W.B. Caldwell, whose testimony she presents to sustain her claim, are know to me to be truthful witnesses, entitled to full faith and credit as such, and that the full text of the affidavit was read to and understood by them before same was signed. I am fully satisfied that this claim is made in good faith, and I have caused the applicant and the witnesses to read or hear read, the proofs they sign. In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed this seal of my office, this 4th day of Sept. 1902. S.J. Brown, Ordinary. 4. Statement of three Witnesses: Wm. B. Caldwell and W.F. Couch said, under oath and from their own personal knowledge that: "Mrs. Sarah Jane Karr, now a resident of the County of Paulding, State of Georgia, is the widow of G.B. Karr, who was a soldier in Company C of the 34th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers." They stated that they did not know, personally, the cause of death of said, Green B. Karr, "but the reports and rumors in the Settlement was that he died from effects of hurt rec'd. while in the Service - Said hurt being caused by accident being on his return to the Army was hurt by being run into by train at Powell's Station, causing loss of the use of one arm and seriously injuring his head to such an extent that his mind has been impaired ever since, also his physical health, rendering him unable to do full manual labor up to time of his death." 5. Affidavit of Mrs. Sallie McGee: I reside at Powellville, Coweta County, Georgia, and was well acquainted with Mr. Green B. Karr during his lifetime. During the war, I know he was a soldier and had been to the army of the Confederacy and had come home on furlough. He lived near Powellville and was there to get on the train to return to his command when his furlough was out. When the train came on which he was to start back to the Confederate Army, he was hurt by the train. He attempted to pass in front of the engine before the train stopped, and was struck and hurt in his head. He was carried into my house and I saw him. Before the wound was dressed, Mrs. S.J. Karr, his wife, carried him home. Above affidavit sworn to and subscribed before Orlando McClendon, Ordinary, Coweta County, Ga. 6. State of Georgia, Paulding County: Personally came before me, F.P. Hudson, Ordinary of said County, Wm. H. Beall and W.O. Hitchcock, both known to me as reputable Physicians of said county who, being severally sworn, say on oath, that they have carefully examined Green B. Karr, deceased, and that said Karr was woundedby crushing in of his skull, the indenture being about two and one fourth inches long which pressed directly down on anterior portion of brain; the same rendering him incapable of any business, his mind being permanently injured, and he had hernia of right side which was permanent and disabled him for life and caused his death, which occurred Jan. 27th, 1899. The said Beall has treated deceased for seven years and was present when he died and states positively that the above injuries were the cause of his death. Sworn to and Subscribed before me February 20th 1900, F.P. Hudson, Ordinary. Signed W.H. Beall,MD W.O. Hitchcock MD. 7. Information included in "Questions for Witnesses": (A)W.F. Couch and W.B. Caldwell resided in Carroll County and had known Sarah J. Karr since 1849. (B)W.B. Caldwell was in the same Company as Green Karr and W.F. Couch was in same Brigade. (C)Green Karr performed regular duty until he was captured in 1864 and sent to prison.(D)Green Karr was captured on Hood's advance into Tennessee. (E)Sarah Jane Karr owned no property except 40 acres of land, the income of same was about $10.00.(F)Sarah Karr's physical condition was bad - unable to earn a support. 8. Information included in "Questions for the Applicant" (A) Mrs. S.J. Karr was 68 years old in February of 1901, born in 1834 in Coweta County. (B) G.B. Karr was born in December of 1833 in Coweta County and she married him in 1851. (C)Since the death of her husband, she had made a living by farming and rental of some property. (D) She owned 40 acres of land, 1 cow, 1 mule and wagon. (e) She returned $215.00 of Real and Personal property in Paulding County in 1899 and 1900. (F) She applied for a pension in 1900 on the Invalid list and in 1901 under the Indigent Widows' list. Both applications were denied - the first because Green lived after his injury and they were considered "affluent" with their 40 acres, and the second becuase she still had the property. 8. Additional Comments: Also included in the attached Pension Application is a copy of the marriage license of Green and Sarah and an affidavit by R.D. Cole, Sr. who stated that he saw their marriage and that the Mrs. S.J. Karr who submitted the Pension Application was the same woman he saw married to Green B. Karr. The second application was filed on July 28, 1902 and Sarah states, under oath, that At the time of his death, as a resident of Paulding County, Ga., under the Invalid Pension Roll of the State of Georgia, Green was allowed a pension of $50.00 per annum. This income stopped at his death and Sarah had to rent some of her property and picked cotton when she could to earn her support. In 1902, she had no income because she could no longer work and was unable to rent the property. One of the witnesses named in her Pension Application, Jasper Williams, was the husband of Green's sister, Rachael Karr Williams. W. F. Couch, I believe, was Sarah's brother. 3. Attention all members. By now all of you know that most computers are under attack by a new worm. I have already removed over 500 messages today that contained the new worm. This is a reminder that discussion of virus, worms, and other attacks of this nature are not to be discussed on this mailing list. There are list for that purpose, and much good information can be gained from them. Our purpose and goal is to discuss genealogy and history of the county, and how it all relates to our ancestors and their families. Please, lets keep it at that. Wyndell Taylor List Manager

You've gotten stuck with a mass-mailing virus, called Sobig-F with the "F" tagging it as the current version of a virus that has run through versions A through E since January. Simply delete the email without opening the attachment, the Internet service providers say. The virus will fade from distribution after Sept. 10. Once opened, Sobig automatically launches an email server. It reads all the addresses in the user's email files and starts sending out infected mail.

Ragan, a citizen of said county who is entitled to full credit and who being duly sworn says: My name is W.W. Ragan. My Post Office is Bremen, GA. I am well acquainted with the applicant, W.W. Skinner. He enlisted in Co. C 56th GA Inf. in Carroll County, GA on or about the 15th of May 1862. He served faithfully in said company and regiment till about Feb 15, 1865. At that time he was given a furlough or leave of absence to go home in Carroll County, GA for 10 days from Opelika, Ala. I was in command of Co. C as a Lieut. and gave him the permit or furlough which was duly approved by the higher officers. This was about Feb 15, 1865. Applicant never returned to his command but his failure to do so was accounted for by his commanding offiers by reason of the fact that at the time of the surrender April 26, 1865 and for some time before, it was impossible for one living at Bowdon, GA or in that vicinity to get to his command in the 56th GA Reg't. Sherman's Army covered the whole country and completely blocked every way out for travel. Applicant's absence from the surrender was considered altogether honorable and no hint of disloyalty was ever lodged against him. I can certify that Mr. Skinner was a true Confederate Soldier. W.W. Ragan. Nov 30, 1912 State of Georgia, County of Carroll Affadavit of Witness as to Service of Applicant: Alfred W. How long within your own personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with tis Company and Regiment: A little over three years in Co. C. 56th GA. 7. When and where was his Command surrendered or discharged: At Greensboro, NC. April 26, 1865. 8. Skinner Georgia, Carroll County Personally appeared, Jas. T. Barnes, who is a citizen of said county and state and worthy of credit, who being duly sworn, says: My post office is Carrollton, GA. I was a member of the same company with W.W. Skinner. We enlisted and served together from enlistment in 1862 till about March 1865 when he was given a ten days' furlough home. I knew him intimately and well. I was Orderly Sergeant of the Co. at the close. I called the last Roll, at the surrender at Greensboro, NC. April 26, 1865. I know that there was not a truer southern soldier than Wiley Skinner. He was in every important engagement of the regiment from Baker's Creek when he was wounded till he was sent home on ten days furlough about the last of February or the first of March 1865. He was always on hand ready and willing to perform any duty required of him, and was not the man to stand back when danger faced us. I personally knew that Wiley Skinner was not absent without leave, that he was on furlough, and that his absence at the surrender was recognized by his superior officers and comrades as unavoidable, as it was generally conceded that from the current reports in circulation and which were believed to be true, that all kinds of transportation from where his command was in West Georgia had been cut off by the enemy and that the railroads had been torn up by Sherman's Army. I believe he would have joined us if he could. I can't think that one so faithful to the cause of Jeff Davis for three years or more would willfully absent himself at the last. He was never and is not now spoken of as anything but a true Condederate Soldier. J. T. Barnes Oct 31, 1914 Letter to Honorable J. W. Lindsey, Atlanta, Georgia written by G.W. Merrell, Notary Public and J.P. in Carrollton, Georgia, regarding the pension application of Wiley W. Skinner: Dear Judge, I want to ask you to file the enclosed evidence with the papers sent yesterday of Wiley W. Skinner. He came today at 12 'oclock, 15 miles, and brought the Orderly Sergeant of his Company and I took the affadavit from each. I was not in the same service with the applicant but know something of his service. He enlisted in Co. C 56th GA in May 1862. I did too. I know that he was a faithful soldier and in many battles. I was present at the surrender. Wiley Skinner was not, but his Captain and officers said they thought he had good reasons for being absent as they knew he would be there if he could, and that they thought that he had been cut off as many others were. I know that his failure to return was recognized as entirely honorable and he was such a good soldier. I think I know that he ought to get a pension. The word came to the company that he went to Newnan to come to us and that he couldn't get transportation as the railroad had been torn up between there and North Carolina where our regiment was. He was present a short time before the surrender. He was given a short furlough, perhaps six or eight weeks before. I am returning herewith W.W. Skinner's application and proofs. I think, with the affadavit of his old comrade A.W. Duke the defects requiring amendment are cured. In the first place, applicant was not absent without leave. He was at home on furlough but it had expired, just a short time before the surrender. He reported to the nearest post, Newnan. The officer in command Col. Griffin whom I have been unable to locate, kept him two weeks, trying to get him transportation, and then sent him home and told him to report to a Lieutenant which he did. This Lieutenant gave him no orders, simply told him to wait til he went back and could go back with him and his squad. The Lieutenant and his squad were captured by the Yankees . This fact goes to show that while he was making every effort to get back, he was cut off from his command by the actual presence of the enemy. Besides this fact, the affadavit of Lieutenant W.W. Ragan shows that he was in command of the company at surrender; that Skinner had a furlough duly approved; that Skinner was a faithful soldier; that his failure to return was accounted for by his commanding officers because for some time before, it was impossible for one living where he did to get to his command because of Sherman's Army covering the whole country, and completely blockaded every route of travel. The applicant's absence was considered entirely honorable. I can certify that Mr. Skinner was a true Confederate soldier. All of his witnesses have sworn to the same, and that no hint of shirking duty was ever made against him. Now, if his commanding officer and his comrades say he was all right, ought that not be sufficient, in the absence of any counter charges or evidence to the contrary. I think and I believe you do, that every presumption should be in favor of the soldier who shows faithful allegience and service for the length of time this man did, and if there is a doubt about it, he should have the benefit of it, the same as a ??? who is charged with robbing a hen roost, don't you? From the objection on the application, it seems that a mistake was made, for W.W Skinner, the applicant, was not a deserter. J.E. Fletcher was at home sick on furlough. A.A. Widener was at home wounded on furlough. Lieut. W.W. Ragan was at the surrender A.W. Duke was present at the surrender Most of them are on the Pension Rolls. I know every one of them well, and know them all to be good men. Pardon me for writing so much. I will rest assured in my own mind that you will do right, and that you will weigh the matter well. Your friend, G.W. Merrell. ************************************************************ Submitted by Candace GravelleAugust 2003 This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 13.5 Kb
