The Haralson Co Historical Society will be recognizing the Early Settlers of Haralson Co during a series of special programs at their regular monthly meetings beginning in February. A different Family or Families will be recognized each month during this special series. The first family to be recognized will be the Caleb Goldin family. Caleb and his family came to this part of the state about 1827, almost 30 years before Haralson Co was formed. A plaque will be presented recognizing this Early Pioneer Family. Please make plans to be at the February 12 meeting at the Old Courthouse on the square in Buchanan at 7 p.m. If you would like to nominate an Early Pioneer Family to be recognized at a future meeting, send an e-mail to gahchs@bellsouth.net with the name of the Early Settlers, date they moved to this area (present day Haralson Co) and why you think they should be chosen. Yancey, I don't have anything documented for David Moseley's parents or siblings and interested in what you have found on them. Were you able to link the two David Moseleys (from Heard County, GA and Coweta County, GA? ) I notice that you have GAY families indicated that you are researching and wondered if you are also descended from Allen Gay and Abigail Castleberry family? I have received correspondence recently on the David Moseley and Elizabeth Spivey family who resided in Coweta County, GA and Carroll County, GA areas between 1830-1900's. This Moseley family is in my allied GAY and STAMPS family lines. There was a different David Moseley who married Nancy Floyd who was in Heard County, GA at the same time that this David Moseley who married Elizabeth Spivey was in Coweta County, GA. Some researchers have confused these two David Moseleys who were born within a few years of each other. To add to the confusion, some of the Coweta County, GA David Moseley family had ties to the Heard County, GA area families. I do not know at this point how or if these two David Moseleys were connected/related to each other. Both of these Moseley families had ties to Henry County, GA area prior to going to Heard and Coweta Counties. The below information is for the David Moseley and Elizabeth Spivey family: DAVID MOSELEY was born 1803 in Georgia. He married ELIZABETH SPIVEY August 24, 1820 in Putnam County, Georgia. She was born 1803 in Georgia. Carol, In looking over my paper files on the Beck families in Carroll and Heard Counties in Georgia, seems likely that your Sarah Ann Beck and John M. Duke were connected to the Beck and Duke families in one (or both) of those counties. The Beck and Duke families were involved in the Betheleham Primitive Baptist Church which served both Carroll and Heard Counties, from the church minutes, some of which is excerpted below: Sept 1849 - -"This day being previously appointed for preaching by John > M. Duke to preach at the house of Sherwood H. Hand, five of the members > of the regular Baptist Church of Christ of the Primitive order called > Bethlehem being present, John Hand, Isaiah Beck Jr., Elizabeth Beck, > Elizabeth Avery and Abraham Hagler, agreed to receive Susan Hand and > Nancy Wall both by experience and they were both baptised on the same > day in the River Tallapoosie, Carroll County, GA by John M. Duke." > Sept 22, 1849 - - Extend the "right hand of fellowship" to Nancy Wall > and Susan Hand. > Dec 22, 1849 - - Received John Gay be experience and baptism. The Duke and Hagler families were related to each other, as were the Dyer, Gay and Beck families in both Carroll and Heard Counties. There were Duke families in both Heard and Carroll Counties and not sure how they were related to each other. (The Duke families in Troup County, GA were related to the Duke families in Heard County, GA.) Also looks like from the paper files and notes from my research that Isaiah Beck Sr.'s wife Dorcus maiden name was probably York, and their daughter Dorcus Beck married John Holloway. I have also recently received several emails from other Beck family researchers who may have contacted you also, who have more info on the descendants of Isaiah Beck Sr. and his wife Dorcus York. The Jeffrey Beck (b. ca 1826 in GA) who was in Heard County, GA in the 1860 census was most likely a son of Isaiah Beck Sr. and Dorcus York. Jeffrey Beck and his wife Elizabeth ? also had a son named Isaiah Beck (born in 1845 and married to Sophronia ? ). That Isaiah Beck and wife are buried in Carroll County, Georgia at the Carrollton City Cemetery. Their tombstones indicate: Isiah Beck April 6, 1845 - April 2, 1923 Sophronia E. Beck Dec 7, 1855 - Jan 27, 1940 Buried next to them is: James W. Thompson March 18, 1919 - May 15, 1955 Dell (?) W. Thompson 1883 - 1966 That Isaiah Beck may also have served in the Civil War and received a pension in Carroll County, GA. (There is an Isaiah Beck listed as a pensioner in a 1909-1911 list of Civil War pensioners in Carroll County, GA ) The other Isaiah Beck (b. ca 1834 in GA) who married Martha Davis, (that Isaiah Beck was the son of Isaiah Beck and Elizabeth Tanner) died in the Civil War and his wife Martha Beck was shown in an 1864 list of Widows of Deceased Soldiers receiving Salt Rations in Carroll County, GA. >From the census and other records for these Beck families, they appeared to move back and forth between Heard and Carroll Counties in GA, or maybe the county lines changed. There may be other records in either county which could shed some light on who the parents were of your Sarah Ann Beck and John M. Duke. Will let you know if I come across anything as research continues in these areas. As we can see, with these families naming the children same names with varying years of birth given in the census records through the years, makes it a little tricky to figure out which ones belong to which family groups. Candace
Dear Candace, Thank you for your post regarding Isaiah Beck. I have long tried to tie the parentage of my Sarah Ann Beck to this line. There is a Sarah Ann daughter of Jesse and Mary Beck in the 1850 Fayette (I believe - going from memory here) Census. All I know for certain is that Sarah Ann Beck born March 18, 1826 married John Monroe Duke. Is he possibly the John M. Duke of your post? John Monroe and Sarah Ann Duke lived their lives in Douglas and Paulding Counties. Their daughter, Martha Jane Duke, was a midwife in Douglas and Paulding and married John Thomas Camp in 1879. Martha and John Camp were my great-grandparents. They are buried at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Paulding County. I belive that Sarah Ann Beck Duke is buried there also. I don't know where John Monroe Duke was buried. He was a CSA veteran and died in 1899. If anyone has any information on any of these families (BECK, DUKE, CAMP) I'd love to exchange what I have. Thanks, Carole
Anyone researching the Conners of West GA in 1800? Paul WhitePaul@aol.com
Have been working on research for Isaiah Beck Jr. family who are in my allied GAY family lines and prob. in my TEAL lines, still working out the Teal connection to my direct Teal family lines. I think that Isaiah Beck Jr.'s father was most likely Isaiah Beck Sr. and his wife Dorcas Holloway, but haven't found the documentation yet. So just have Isaiah Beck Jr. family and his descendants at this point in research. These Becks are in the Allen Gay (rev. war soldier) family bible along with some Teal families and I have not figured out how these Teals were connected to my Teals. My grandmother was Etta Gay who married Joseph Teal, and Allen Gay is my 4th great grandfather. My father always said that in the older days, it was not uncommon for distant cousins to marry, and I have found that to be true, even 1st and 2nd cousins, etc. Would like to exchange info on BECK, GAY, DYER and TEAL families who were in Carroll County, GA between 1830-1880's. Bill, Also meant to say that it does not cost anything to use the genealogical society library collection which is housed at the public library in Carrollton, GA, it is free for anyone to use like any library. I mentioned joining the Genealogical Society for Carroll County because I feel it is well worth the annual fee to get the quarterly publications that are full of great info such as old deed records, marriage records, old newspaper obits and queries from other researchers of Carroll County,GA families. If one lives close to Carrollton area, could just go see what is at the library there which will include the old genealogy (and probably current one) quarterly publications also, but if one lives too far to get there very often, the quarterly publications are a great way to stay in touch with researchers in that area and to receive historical information about the area and families who lived there. I refer back to the data in the quarterly publications quite alot, especially when I learn of new surnames or family connections, and usually find something in them which is helpful. And of course, always good to be able to join the societies such as these to help support their efforts so they can continue providing the great service. Candace
Bill, The Carroll County, Genealogical Society library is in Carrollton, GA at the public library there. I have been getting their quarterly genealogy publications since 1990 and they are one of the best that I have ever seen, and well worth the annual fee of $20. to join. Here is their web site which has a little more info about them which includes the location of the library, their hours, phone number, etc. I live in Oregon and our libraries don't have alot on the southern states, so I have joined various Genealogical Societies like this one which has been a tremendous help for researching in Carroll County and nearby areas. Also have met some new cousins through queries in their quarterly publication. I was at the library in Carrollton, GA in 1996 and felt it was well worth the trip there for family research. The people at the library were extremely nice and helpful and I enjoyed my visit there. Can't wait to get back there again on my next visit to AL and GA areas. Here is the web site for the Genealogical Society. They offer some great publications at a reasonable cost also. http://ccgs.westgeorgia.org/ Candace cteal@dnc.net
My family was in Carroll Co. from before 1850 to aft. 1870 (U.S. Census) and then migrated to Chattooga Co. GA. James Stephenson m.Elvira Scoggins about 1836. Spelling is Stevenson in 1850 census. Candace, I would like to know more about the Carroll County Genealogical Society library -- where is it, what are the hours, what is in their collections, who can use it, ....... I keep promising myself that I will make a trip to Carroll Co. to do research and this is the first time I have heard of this resource. Should I have it on my list and how much time should I plan. Emily, In case your NAIL family connection is with John or Burrell NAIL family, here is what I have found on the Nail families from research in Carroll County, GA, Henry County, GA and Randolph County, AL areas: JOHN NAIL was born 1759 in Amherst County, Virginia, and died 1865 in Georgia. He married MARTHA TEAL, daughter of EMANUEL TEAL and MARTHA MCHENRY. She was born 1785 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1870 in Randolph County, Alabama. Notes for JOHN NAIL: Notes: 1850 census Carroll County, GA shows John Nail, age 84, living with Delilah Nail, age 57, and Mary Henry, age 40, and 4 children; also living with them is Lewis Thrower, age 30, presumably his wife Martha, and two children. Family records of decendents of Burrell Nail indicate that John Nail was first married to Martha Teal, then to Delilah...See further information in the section of Burrell Nail families in this report. Nail was born Sept 6, 1802. probably in Franklin County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth Henry on Oct 13, 1832 in Henry County, GA. Burrill and Elizabeth had 13 children between 1832 and 1852. Sometime between 1865 and 1870, Burrill Nail moved his family to Randolph County, Alabama. Elizabeth died in 1901 and Burrill in 1905 at age 103. Both are buried in the Old Rocky Branch Cemetery near Wedowee, Alabama." Article from a Randolph County, Alabama newspaper "The Roanoke Leader", Wednesday, Sept 10, 1902: 100 Years Old. A Century of Life Appropriately Celebrated Last Sunday, Sept 6, a unique celebration occurred at Rocky Branch Church, in Beat 5. It was the public celebration of the hundredth birthday of the oldest man in Randolph County---Mr. Burill Nail. The scheme was the idea of Mr. G.O. Hill, and to him is largely due the credit for the successful execution. A large crowd estamated at from 800 to 1000, was present, including some of the most prominent people, notably Mr. Frank McMurray, who is over 92 years of age. The formal exercises were opened with music and Rev. T.C. Culpepper led in prayer. Mr. G.O. Hill presided. His opening remarks were happy and instsructive. He stated that Mr. Nail was born in Morgan County, Georgia, Sept 6, 1802. He was married to Betsy Henry in 1829 and to them was born 14 children, all of whom were reared except one. His oldest child is now age 72 years of age, his youngest age 45. He has numerous descendants. His father John Nail lived to be 104 years of age. Burrill Nail been living in Randolph County (AL) since 1866, and has ever been a good man and useful citizen. For the past several years he has been blind and partially deaf but can walk and talk as well as many men of fewer years. " Note: Above article shows photo of "Grandpa Nail, age 100". " Burrell Nail's father John Nail was born in Wilkes County, GA ca 1759. John Nail married a North Carolina Indian, Martha Teal....John and Martha were in Franklin County, GA by 1800, moved several times in central Georgia before settling in Henry County, GA by 1830. At least three children were born of this marriage: Burrill L. Nail (b. Sept 6, 1802; Mary Nail (b. 1810) and Martha Nail (b. 1820). It appears that John and Martha separated/divorced and she lived the remainder of her life (Martha) with her oldest son Burrill, dying sometime after 1870. John Nail took a new wife, Delilah, and was shown in the census for 1860 at age 99. " (Article from the "Heritage of Randolph County, AL", submitted by Don C. East of Lineville, AL in 1998.) Emily, Here are some excerpts from the DAR grave marking ceremony for Nimrod Jones from an article in the Carrollton Times Newspaper in 1997 which provides some interesting information about Nimrod Jones family: Notes: From "The Times, Georgian Sept 1997" " A color guard from the Sons of the American Revolution stands at attention Saturday during a ceremony marking the grave of Revolutionary War soldier Nimrod Jones. Jerry Shadinger, a descendant of Jones, unveils the grave maker that had been placed by the Abraham Baldwin Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Jones is buried in a family cemetery south of Carrollton, Georgia. The ceremony, according to the DAR, was the first of it's kind in Carroll County, Georgia. ...Nimrod Jones drew a plot of land in the lottery for the creation of the county in 1827 (Carroll)...he was one of the counties earliest settlers, and died young, before January 1849 when his Will was probated. >From the reading at the dedication and grave marking ceremony, excerpts: " Richard Jones is believed to be the father of Nimrod Jones, and was living in Orange County, North Carolina in 1759 when he sold 140 acres on March 13 with Aaron Jones (listed as 'probably a Quaker' in the deed book) as witness. On May 14, 1765 Richard Jones bought 260 acres while an Evan Jones bought 89 acres. William Pickett, 'a Quaker' affirmed the sale of 110 acres by Richard Jones on 12 Nov 1765; Jeremiah Pickett 'a Quaker' affirmed a sale by Andrew Jones of 110 acres the same day. In 1767 Quakers living in Newcastle and Chester Counties, Pennsylvania moved to Orange County, North Carolina. By 1769 the Quakers moved from North Carolina to the Wrightsborough settlements in Georgia. In a roster of the first headright land grants in the settlement, Richard Jones received 150 acres. Nimrod Jones was born ca 1765, probably in Orange County, North Carolina. In 1793 he was listed on the muster roll in Columbia County, Georgia. He had married Charlotte Bullock in Columbia County on Jan 15, 1791. Bullochs were found in both Orange County, North Carolina and Columbia County, Georgia. Nimrod Jones sold 60 acres on Maddock's Creek in Wrightsborough to Amos Green. The Quaker settlement began to dissolve when most of the Quakers migrated to Ohio between 1805 and 1809. Charlotte Bulloch and Nimrod Jones had five children; Charlotte died before 1812. On March 15, 1812, Nimrod Jones married Elizabeth Gray. Her family lived in the Quaker settlement at Wrightsborough. Elizabeth Gray and Nimrod Jones are thought to have had three children; Elizabeth Gray died before 1821. On July 15, 1821 Nimrod Jones married Rebecca (Gray?) in Columbia County, Georgia. Rebecca and Nimrod had two children. During the American Revolution, Quakers were exempt from the draft. However some joined a militia group. In the early land lottery of 1820, Nimrod Jones received land in Columbia County, Georgia. In the fifth land lottery of 1827, Nimrod Jones received land lot #256, 5th District, Carroll County, Georgia. This land was awarded Dec 20, 1830. Enroute to Carroll County, GA Jones and his family were in Henry County, Georgia at the time of the 1830 census. By 1840, Nimrod Jones was in Carroll County, GA. In 1843, he ws elected coroner of the county. He became a member of the Tallapoosa Primitive Baptist Church on Feb 2, 1842. His wife Rebecca joined by letter on the same day. On Mar 21, 1846, Richard Jones, son of Nimrod Jones, joined the church and later was one of the founders of the Whooping Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Notes for RICHARD JONES: Notes: From the "Carroll County Times Aug 31, 1911 " (Carroll County, GA newspaper) REUNION OF THE FAMILY OF RICHARD JONES " Richard Jones, Uncle Dick, as he was familiarly called, moved to Carroll County, Georgia in the year 1840 and settled on Whooping Creek where he principally raised his family of ten children and where he lived til the time of his death. The descendants of this pioneer citizen met in reunion on the date above mentioned. There was present at this reunion our old and highly esteemed friend W.T. Jones, the oldest of the family, celebrating his seventy-fifth birthday. He raised seven children and has sixty grand children, forty great grandchildren and one great great grand child. Uncle Tom is now living with his second wife and is hale and hearty and quite active for one his age. Richard Jones' daughter, Mrs. W.H. Nail, who is 73 years of age was present. Also, Hon. N. J. Jones, a highly respected citizen, who has seven children and twenty grand children, and Hon. J.H. Jones, a spendid citizen and one of the leading merchants of the county, who has four children and six grand children and is 58 years old, also our much esteemed fellow citizen R.A. Jones, the youngest son of Richard Jones, a prominent merchant of East Carrollton, who is 52 yrs old and has four children. In addition to those mentioned, there was present quite a number of the descendants of this numerous and honorable family, together with a few invited guests whose names we have been unable to get. The reunion was held in the grove in front of R.A. Jones' store and thus assembled they talked over old times and refreshened the memories of childhood and paid honor to this good old man's memory, father, grandfather and great grand father. Just as the mid day passenger train blew it's long whistle for Carrollton, the ladies began to spread the dinner on the table and very soon the kin-folks and friends were invited around, and after thanks were returned by the youngest son, R.A. Jones, all were permitted to partake of as fine a dinner as it has ever been our pleasure to enjoy, as can be fully attested to by our friend, Baliff W.M. Jones, if he ever lives to tell it. Though Uncle Bill is not related to this family, he has borne the name with honor and there is not a Jones in the world that would be ashamed to claim kinship with him......" Emily, My gggg grandfather was Nimrod Jones, the Rev. War soldier who died in Carroll County, GA and is buried at Whooping Creek area. His daughter Elizabeth Ann Jones married my ggg grandfather John B. McElroy in Carroll County, GA. Their daughter Rebecca Ann McElroy married 1st to Burrell Green Phillips (Burrell G. Phillips' parents were Charles Phillips and Sally Nail); after Burrell G. Phillips died in the Civil War, Rebecca Ann McElroy Phillips married my gg grandfather Andrew Jackson Skinner and they moved to Cleburne County, Alabama by 1870's. If you are going to Carroll County, GA and if you have time to go to the Carroll County Genealogical Society library, there is a huge file on Nimrod Jones there and his family. The DAR had a nice ceremony in 1996 or 1997 and placed a Rev. War. tombstone for Nimrod Jones. I am happy to exchange/share information on the Jones and Nail families and can connect you with other researchers/descendants of these family lines. Candace cteal@dnc.net
