    1. [GACARROL] marriage look up
    2. Can someone do a marriage look up please: Peyton Flournoy Horton & Susan/Sarian Allen It took place b/t 1850 and 1860. Mr Horton was in Pike Co., GA, but family legend has it that his 2nd wife, Miss Allen, was from Carrollton, GA. According to the 1860 Pike Co., GA census, it looks like her first name was Sarian or Susan. If there is anything involving a P. F. Horton, I would be most interested. 1. [GACARROL] Carroll Co, GA Marriage Licenses Indexes on E-Bay
    2. In my weekly scan of E-Bay for genealogy material, I saw the following item is up for bid. It's currently at $75.00, but the description states that it originally sold for $150.00. . . Included in the description: INDEX TO MARRIAGE LICENSES CARROLL COUNTY, GEORGIA, 1827-1980; VOLUME 1 GROOM INDEX, VOLUME II BRIDE INDEX. Compiled by J. M. Fagg, 1984, 614 pages each volume, for a total of 1228 pages. Excellent condition, 9 x 11.5", hardbound. Set retailed for $150, 17 years ago. Entries are arranged alphabetically in each volume, and read as such: "Abberger, Donald Lee, Dantio, Betty Lou, 2/21/1978, Z, 96, white." Carroll Co, was established in 1826 from Indian Lands, so that means almost (if not all) of the marriages are preserved in this set. Carroll Co. is currently bordered by the following GA counties: Haralson (formed from Carroll in 1856), Paulding (from Carroll in 1832), Douglas formed from Carroll in 1870, Fulton, Coweta (an original county) and Heard formed in 1830. It is bordered by Alabama counties Cleburne and Randolph, which was burned in 1897 and all records destroyed. --------- To view the auction, go to this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1607028260 -or- go to: www.ebay.com and do a search using: Carroll Marriages I have NO interest in this auction, but I just thought someone researching in Carroll Co might be interested. Perhaps someone could look them up for you. I do not have the book. Have you checked the Genweb for Carroll Co. GA to see if there are cemetery listings there. Your local LDS Family History Center has microfilm of records you can order for viewing for the time period you are looking for. 1. [GACARROL] William Ba(t)chelor died 1869, need help
    2. Peggy
    3. Hello, I am brand new to your list. I have just been informed my grgrgr grandfather was listed in Carroll Co., GA in the mortality index, as passing away in September of 1869. It is very important that I can connect him to his family from NC to the present generation. Without a will, this has been difficult as census when the children were young did not show their names only ages. Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to find the Probate records for this time period? Can anyone tell me what I could do besides this idea? I would love to know where he is buried. His wife's name was Martha. He frequently went by the spelling Bachelor, but our name has been spelled 40 different ways including Bachelder and Bachler. I am told he is listed in the 1870 mortality schedule as William Batchelor Sr. Thank you so much for listening! I could use help at this point, being so far away from GA. 1. [GACARROL] Cullman County, Alabama
    2. It is my understanding that the Railroad owned a bunch of land in Cullman County and that a Colonel Cullman worked a deal to sell the land to farmers on very low interest and easy payment terms. Supposedly Colonel Cullman went around the country trying to interest farmers to move to Cullman and offered them good farm land very cheap. He obviously did well in Carroll County, and he was right on target about it being good farm land. Carroll County was very rocky farm land. I understand that if you visit some of the older cemeteries in Cullman you will see very many of the family names from Carroll. My Jordan's moved there with some of their cousins, my family moved back to Carrollton but others stayed then moved on to Texas.

    1. Re: [GACARROL] Why did this happen? GA > AL
    2. Richard, I was noticing the same thing. Both my Wrens and McWhorters moved to Cullman and, as I've put in more names in my family tree, I noticed some of my Paynes moved also. Some of the McWhorters ended up in Etowah and Blount counties (AL) too. My Wrens married into the Cochran family and I think I have a Brock or two in my Paynes. In fact, William's second marriage to Mrs. Bentley must have had the family blessing. One of the witnesses on the marriage certificate is "C.C. Cochran," his late wife's brother-in-law! I would be interested to know if anyone has any ideas on this. I know the Atlanta area was devastated by the war, but my migrations were long after that --- at least 30 years. Anybody got answers? Opinions? Ideas? Judy

    1. [GACARROL] Rev. Leroy McWhorter/Carroll Co., GA
    2. Looking for descendants/relatives of Rev. Leroy McWhorter (1797-1875) who moved from SC to GA sometime in the 1830s or 1840s and settled in Carroll County, Villa Rica area. Leroy was one of the founders and the first pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church. Married Mary Elizabeth Thomasson (Thompson, Thomson) in SC. Children: Moses Allen McWhorter (1820-1902, my link) m. Sarah Kinney. Both buried in Powell's Chapel cemetery near Villa Rica. Sarah M. McWhorter, b. 1822, m. George M. Johnston Mary Ann E. McWhorter, b. 1823 Johnson McWhorter, b. 1826 Laura McWhorter, b. 1827, m. William Thompson Thomas Benson McWhorter, b. 1829, died in Civil War. Married Martha Barr. Elizabeth McWhorter, b. 1831, m. Madison M. Bolton Newton Alexander McWhorter, b. 1833, m. Celia Eliza (Elizabeth) Wilson Dr. Franklin, b. 1836, died in Civil War. Married Nancy Ann Lucinda Wilson (sister to Celia above). Moses Allen and Sarah Kinney McWhorter's son, William Leroy McWhorter (1857-1900) married (1) Eliza J. Wren (dau. of William Wren and Martha Wilson) and raised their family in the Villa Rica/Fairplay district of Carroll County. William moved the family to Cullman, AL following Eliza's death (mid 1890s) and remarried (2) Mrs. Selie Bentley in 1897. William and Eliza's son, John Allen McWhorter (1882-1938) either never left, or came back to, Carroll County after attending school in Athens and taught school along with his uncle, Thomas Newton McWhorter. John married one of his students, Sarah Jane Payne (dau. of Joseph Joshua Payne and Louisa Elizabeth Boyd) and lived first in Shellman, GA (1908) and then Turin, in Coweta County (1910), where he also taught school. This family intermarries with the McWhorters, Boyds and Paynes A LOT. John Allen and Sarah Jane Payne McWhorter moved first to Atlanta (abt. 1915) and then to East Point, GA, in the 1920s and lived out their lives there. Both are buried in College Park Cemetery on Virginia Avenue. I have some information but need to fill in a lot of gaps on spouses, children, etc. of the early McWhorters. Also would like clues to the ancestry of Rev. Leroy. Was his father Moses? One source says it was John ???? I think he is related to Allen Marlin McWhorter who also settled in Carroll county ... but how? Will gladly share any info I have. Any help appreciated. Many thanks ... Judy

    1. [GACARROL] Why did this happen? GA > AL

    3. I keep seeing where families moved from Carroll county Georgia to Cullman county Alabama, likely about the time of the forming of Cullman county in 1877. Does anyone know the history of the attraction of the one and the leaving of the other in this regard? I know my Brock family and some associated with them moved this way, and it didn't seem to be all that successful in Alabama since fairly shortly they moved on to Texas. And these families had been in Carroll county for long term, some having fought that great Northern enemy of States Rights, the War of Northern Aggression, from that county. ;-) If any of Carroll county whose families were of the BROCK, DAVIS, NELSON, WATSON, COCHRAN, GREEN surnames, especially if living in the region of Villa Rica, could relate, I'd like to know of your research. -- Richard Brock

My husband grandfather was Issac Cobb Weatherby one of four children of Edmund J. Weatherby. Edmund married first Mary Jourdan in Carroll Co. Ga. 15 Oct. 1848 second Mary Blackstock in Haralson Co. 27 July 1858 Edmund was the son of Aaron Weatherby and Mary Robertson who are on the 1840 and 1850 census' for Carroll Co. I know nothing of Mary Jourdan's family or Mary Robertson's family or who Aaron Weatherly's parents were. Is there anyone out there that can help me? Thanks, Betty

    1. [GACARROL] Dean/Boyd connection in Carroll Co.
    2. Looking for information on the following Dean family in 1850 Meriwether County, some of whom may have moved to Carroll. Trying to find maiden name of wife of Christopher Columbus Boyd, possibly sister of (Mrs.) Caroline Dean. I know this is going through the back door but the front door's locked :-) 1850 Meriwether: HH#1319 DEAN, Thomas B., 46, b. NC DEAN, Martha, 46, b. NC DEAN, Thomas, 18, b. NC DEAN, Jane, 15, b. Christopher Columbus BOYD (above) married SARAH G.H. ---- in Oct. 1868, as noted in his Bible records. There is no record of the marriage in Carroll or Meriwether. However, in 1870 and 1880 Carroll County census, Christopher Columbus Boyd and Sarah ---? have living in the house with them a CAROLINE DEAN, b. abt 1842 in GA, (widowed/divorced, according to census) said to be C.C.'s sister-in-law. I assume this is his wife's sister who married a DEAN, possibly one of the DEAN boys living next door to the BOYD family in 1850 Meriwether. Marriage records in Meriwether do not show a DEAN married to a CAROLINE ----. I suspect that since she is widowed in 1870, her husband may have been a Civil War casualty.? Hoping someone out there is related and can come up with a maiden name for CAROLINE DEAN and SARAH G.H. BOYD. Any information appreciated. Judy
