Belinda E. Savadge 568 Rock Forge Rd. Jefferson, Georgia 30549 706-367-8909 savadge@alltel.net August 14, 2001 Dear Family Members: This year the 7th. Annual Bailey and Related Families Reunion will be on Saturday, September 15, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. (CST, Alabama Time). The reunion will be held at the Kiwanis Park in Wedowee, AL. I have reserved the park so the children will also have a good time and be able to play. We will also have use of the baseball field. In the event that it rains, we will move the reunion to the Wedowee Church of Christ on Hwy. 48 (West) going toward Lineville. The church is on your right. I am asking everyone to bring a covered dish to help with the food. We had a good size crowd last year and we are hoping for a bigger crowd this year. Please tell other family members that you may know about the reunion, since I dont have everyones address. This year I am also asking if there are any family members that would like to donate something as door prize to please let me know. The item can be store bought or even better a handmade craft. You can contact me at the above address, phone number or e-mail address. Please bring old and current photographs, family bible records, news articles, old stories, or anything else you think would be interesting to share with other members of the family. Also please bring along any updates on your family such as: births, marriages, deaths, new addresses and phone numbers, so I can keep the Family Tree and records current. Anyone wishing to submit recipes for the Family Cookbook please bring the recipes to the reunion or mail them to me. I had a computer crash and the disk that I saved them to got corrupted. So please everyone re-submit your recipes for the book. I am still working on the Bailey and related families but I still have a good bit of missing information. I would like all the information to be as accurate as I can possibly get it. I would like to write a book that is not just a list of names and dates. On the contrary, I would like the book to be a history and record book for our families and future generations to come. I would like photos and stories of as may ancestors and relatives as I can obtain. This would make the book more interesting for everyone. I hope you can make this year's reunion. This is a way to meet new family members and reacquaint yourself with family members you have lost track of. I look forward to seeing you all there. If you have any questions or need further information about the reunion, please contact me at 706-367-8909, if no answer please leave a message, or you can e-mail me at savadge@alltel.net Sincerely Your Cousin, Belinda E. Hi Help! Is anyone doing research on John T. Duncan in Carroll during the mid 1800s. I am finding confusing information I would like to discuss with someone. Thanks. Bob
Hi Linda, I'm not familiar with the Banning area of Carroll County, GA, but here's a URL that might be helpful: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form There are pull-down lists for state and then county, and for feature type, I use "church" for one query and then "cemetery" for another query. Oh, and I didn't see any Godby graves, but when I looked at the Jordan Memorial Cemetery (near Bethany Christian Church on Hwy 61), I noted there were Godsby graves. (I didn't make a note of anything other than their surname, as I was in a hurry and was actually looking for someone else.) Best of luck! Dear List, I am trying to locate the burial site and/or death date of my husband's ancestor, Elizabeth Velvin Johnston. Elizabeth was married to Joseph J. Johnston who died at the Camp Douglas prisoner of war camp in Illinois during the Civil War. They had a number of children, including John T. Johnston who was only two at the time of Joseph's death. John married Susan Francis Richardson and they are both buried at Ramah Baptist Church in Palmetto. Family information is that John worshiped at County Line Baptist Church as a child. Yesterday I searched microfilm records of church minutes and found that an Elizabeth Johnson (without the "t") was a member of the church, but I think she was too early to be ours. The minutes were lengthy and difficult to read. There were not many recorded burials for this church that I could locate. Finally, my question, does anyone on the list have knowledge of this church and a possible burial place for Elizabeth? The only Velvin burial I can locate is Elizabeth's brother, John Jethro, who was buried at a Villa Rica cemetery. I have no knowlege of siblings for Joseph. Elizabeth probably died after 1880. Thanks in advance if anyone is able to help, carole
Hi, Could someone tell me the names and locations of any old cemetaries near Banning in Carroll County? My great great grandparents are buried there. We will be traveling to Carrollton for a wedding next weekend and I would like to be able to take my mother to that cemetary. We will be going to the one where her grandparents are buried as she grew up down the road from there. Is there anyone on this list doing research on any Godbee, Nix or Mullenix families? Thank you. Linda Turner
Hi all... My mother was kind enough to share her scrapbook with me recently --- memories she kept as a pre-teen and teen. In the scrapbook, there is a newspaper clipping which mentions several Carroll County youngsters. These may be your ancestors or relatives ... some even may still be living. The time frame was about 1927-1931. If there are any still living, I know my mom would love to hear from them. E-mail me privately and I'll give you her e-mail address. This is from a Carroll County newspaper ... don't know what the name of it was: "MISS KATHLEEN AND MR. RALPH PAYNE COMPLIMENT VISITORS AT PICNIC "Miss Kathleen and Mr. Ralph Payne entertained at a picnic Tuesday evening at Kinney's Lake, complimenting their guest, Miss Marian McWhorter of East Point. Those enjoying the occasion were Misses Marian McWhorter, Kennon Henderson, Margaret Cheney, Virginia Webb, Jane Mandeville, Jane Luck, Eleanor Sheats, Mary Lyle, Lula Herndon, Marjorie Proctor, Floryce Williamson, Evelyn Fuller, Kathleen Payne; Messrs. Damon Webb, Beverly Thompson of Lexington, Ky., James Bledsoe, Donald Williamson, Paul Brock, A.W. Ford, Edwin Harmon, James Harmon, Tom Loftin, Robert Harmon, Appleton McKinley of Atlanta, Lloyd Griffin of Leesburg, Fla., and Ralph Payne. Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Payne were chaperons for the occasion." Ralph and Kathleen Payne were the children of Coie L. Payne and Annie Belle Hyde, and were my mother's first cousins. Coie was the son of Joseph Joshua Payne and Louisa Elizabeth Boyd. My mother is the daughter of Sarah Jane Payne and John Allen McWhorter. Kathleen married Henley Logan and lived in Roopville. Ralph married Frances Foster from Heflin, Alabama. The Paynes, Boyds and McWhorters all were early Carroll County residents. My mother says she spent many a happy summer with her Carroll County cousins. Just sharing... Judy in Newnan, GA
Jody: This is the beauty of the County Heritage book series. Hundreds of people from all over the Country submit material on their ancestors. If you place your name and address at the bottom of the article, you will hear from many other relatives who can shed light on your family line. If you need more info. on the Carroll Co. I am looking for a magazine called "Georgia Magazine" (sic) --- issue dated June-July, 1963. It is supposed to be a history/genealogy magazine, but I cannot find it anywhere - can someone tell me anything about such a magazine and if that title is correct? Tony
Sorry, y'all ... I forgot two things: 1. I have seen files on the net that give Rev. Leroy's full name as "Leroy Jackson McWhorter." Can someone tell me where this information came from? If it is true, I'd love to be able to add a full name to my ancestor. In his will, Leroy gives his name simply as "Leroy McWhorter." 2. Eliza J. Wren (my great-grandmother), who married William Leroy McWhorter (son of Moses McWhorter and Sarah Kinney), is seen in some places as "Lemer," "Lizer," "Limer," and "Lima." Her name was "Eliza." "Lima" was her nickname. On her marriage certificate, her surname name is written, "Wrenn." Since her father, William Wren, and all the relatives I've come across spell it with one "n." I think we can safely say that this is a clerk's error. Thanks for listening. I hope responses to both my messages will be posted to the list so we can all share in this controversy and maybe get some things resolved. Judy
To all you helpful folks out there: A few weeks ago, I put a query here, asking for information and help on finding the siblings and ancestry of Rev. Leroy McWhorter, Baptist minister and farmer, who moved from Greenville, SC to Carroll County, GA in the 1840s. One of the reasons was because I didn't have the information and had no idea where to begin, and another was that having that information would help me figure out the McWhorter-to-McWhorter marriages that occurred within my line. Leroy was my GGGgrandfather. "Thank you" does not come close to the gratitude I feel for all the responses I received. A few are still trickling in. However, the answers I received were as varied as the persons who sent them, and I have a few more questions since Rev. Leroy's ancestry seems to be a very controversial issue. And, the names of Leroy's siblings depend on which person you "choose" as Leroy's father. I know you "old timers" have been through this dozens of times, but we newcomers need to know, so please bear with me. I think it's important that we all have the same information so as to avoid confusion, at least as much as possible. While I have done a mere fraction of the research most of you have done, I have read a few things and really need to know the reasons why people have come to their conclusions. Please, please, correct me if I am wrong in any of the information that appears below. First: Has there been further research since Davis McWhorter, Ura McWhorter Byars, Minnie Bowman and Max L. McWhorter did their work on this line? They do not agree on Leroy's parentage either. Some responses I received say Leroy's father was Moses, some say Landon, some say John. The files and web pages online disagree also. Obviously, Leroy can only have one father. Is it possible that we can come to some agreement on this? In the information I received from you, without exception, ALL people who are descended from Rev. Leroy, and a few who weren't, said his father was Moses. Without exception, ALL people who gave Landon and John as their choices were NOT descended from Rev. Leroy, but were from related branches back in the family tree. At this point, I tend to go with the Moses believers. Since there seems to be lack of hard proof, the fact that Leroy named his first son "Moses Allen" --- not one child named John, not one child named Landon --- certainly would tend to make one lean in that direction. I understand that the Bible records of John did not give Leroy as a son. Wouldn't that tend to eliminate John as Leroy's father? I also understand that there are no records of Landon as an adult and no conclusive proof that he is Leroy's father. Second: Has there been further research on the two wives of Moses McWhorter who died in Edgefield Dist., SC, in 1797 (said to be Leroy's grandfather) and left a will naming his wife, Elizabeth and "her"children and "my" sons? Here again, the answers differ -- some saying Moses only had one wife, Elizabeth Puckett, some saying he was married to Ruth Barnett, some saying he was married to Sarah Barnett, some saying he was married to Unknown Barnett. A Sarah Barnett is said to have been married to Jeremiah, and one person indicated that Sarah was married to both Moses and Jeremiah. Comments, anyone? (Can you understand why I, and many others, are totally confused?) Third: In Mrs. Byars book, there appear to be several misprints which have been propagated and passed on. (And this I am sure of.) The family that Polly Ann McWhorter (daughter of Moses McWhorter and Sarah Kinney and one of the McWhorter triplets) married into was named NOLES. It appears in Mrs. Byars' book and in two of the family files I received as NELES. If you look for the "Neles" family in Carroll County, you will not find one. Census records, marriage records, and Carroll County history books give this name plainly as NOLES. It was interchangeable with KNOWLES, also. (I have corresponded with Noles/Knowles descendants and heard my own mother speak of her "Noles" cousins.) Sarah Kinney, wife of Moses Allen McWhorter, was born in HABERSHAM County, Georgia ... not MABERSHAM as it appears in the book and in the same two files I received. Leroy Alexander McWhorter, son of Newton Alexander McWhorter, married H.E. MUSE (I have her name as Harriett Eugenie), not MUME, as it appears in the book and in the same two files I received. Once again, you will not find a MUME family in Carroll County and the marriage record plainly states "MUSE." If you think these are piddly errors and don't matter, try doing a search on the net for a misspelled name. NELES could even be interpreted as a spelling for NEALS ... way off the track. So, with all that said, does anyone have comments? Maybe if we air the differences where everybody can see the responses, we can at least put this thing to rest. Whew! Thank you ALL again for all your help. And special thanks to Kathryn McWhorter Martinson, Kathy Gregory, Laura Harker and Tricia Pettit for all their time and trouble. I'm sending this to both the McWhorter list and the Carroll County list in hopes that it will bring some response. Judy
Candace, Just noticed your questions ref. LODGE LANGLEY, posted on 7/29. (I've been out of the country). Did you get all the information you needed from Donna? I too, have a bit of information about that line and am willing to share what I know. Idalu Bishop mombalu@alltel.net

Hello list, I hope someone can help me find my ggrandmother's maiden name. It was either Mary E. Turner or Mary E. Hulsey married William L. Hays abt. 1847-1850. Thanks for all your help once more. Lorrie
Searching for info. on Levi LANGLEY. Believe him to have been in Carroll Co, GA about 1850. Any help? Donna Wall
Donna, I have wondered if Levi Langley (age 18 in the 1850 census in Carroll County, GA with is wife Eliza age 20, no children born yet) was a son of Lodge Langley (age 62, born NC in 1850 census in Carroll County, GA) since they are living near each other. By 1860 Lodge Langley family is living in Heard County, Georgia, but did not see Levi Langley there. I have suspected that Lodge Langley also had a son William Langley who is living next door to him in the 1860 census in Heard County, Georgia. William Langley's son Robert S. Langley married Mary E. Gay (the daughter of John Gay and Martha W. Dyer). Does this sound like the same Langley family that you are researching? I recall seeing something on the Langley genforum about Lodge Langley, but the researchers who have queries on it didn't know about theWilliam Langley family that I was researching. Perhaps some of them know more about Levi Langley and his family. Candace
