Attn: Thor Egede-Nissen Ever hear of "Queensborough", the Irish settlement/township in St. George Parish (later Burke County)? John ALLEN, and wife Jane BEATTY, with 5 children, came to GA on ship "Hopewell" in 1771 to settle in "Queensborough". John ALLEN was from Belfast, Northern Ireland. 400 acres granted by President and Council, Jan. 1771; 150 acres granted by President and Council, Nov. 1771. No registered grant found. John ALLEN living in Burke County, Oct. 1, 1798; land at dwelling not over 2 acres, assessed within $100. On Jefferson County tax list, 1802. Will in Jefferson County, Will Bk. A, made Oct. 24, 1801, probated Jan. 25, 1805, mentions wife Jane, granddaughter, Margaret FLEMING, daughter of Robert FLEMING, grandson John FLEMING, 3 grandchildren by James MCCONKEY, son-in-law, Robert, son-in-law. Executors: Benjamin WALKER, William FLEMING, John MARTIN, Matthew MARSHALL. Witnesses: James WILSON, William BEATTY, William HAIR. ( I don't believe the above ALLENs are any relation to my family line ). The two James ALLENs from the 1820 census of Burke Co., GA are as follows: James ALLEN from pg. 6 of census: 1 male, 10 to under 16; 2 males 16 to under 18; 2 males 18 to under 26; and 1 male 45 yrs. or older. 1 female 10 to under 16; 1 female 16 to under 26; and 1 female 45 yrs. or older. Number of persons engaged in agriculture = 3. No slaves were listed. James ALLEN from pg. 23 of census: 2 males, under 10 yrs.; 1 male. 18 to under 26; and 1 male 45 yrs. or older. 2 females, under 10 yrs.; 2 females, 10 to under 16; and 1 female 45 yrs. or older. There were 10 male and 13 female slaves in this household. 8 persons were engaged in agriculture. This James ALLEN apparently was a wealthy planter. There is a remote possibility that the John ALLEN on pg. 20 of the 1820 Burke Co., GA census could be the John ALLEN, b. 1745/54 that I am searching for. The 1820 census, unfortunately, does not show area of residence. I'm looking for a John ALLEN who settled in area around Bark Camp Baptist Church circa 1778. He was supposedly one of the 29 charter members and one of the first deacons. I have been unable to make any "positive" identification with my ALLENs and the ALLENs in the 1820 census of Burke Co., GA. I have been able to "positively" identify two ALLENs in the 1830 census that are from my ALLEN family. They are Andrew Y. J. ALLEN, pg. 118 of 1830 census of Burke County, residing in GMD#70 (area north of Bark Camp Church) and his brother, William P. ALLEN, pg. 124, residing in GMD#73 (Midville and surrounding area ). Andrew Young John ALLEN was still single and living alone. William Price ALLEN, his brother and my 2nd gr-grandfather, had just gotten married and had no children when 1830 census was taken. Any additional information regarding the aforementioned will be appreciated. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Edwin T. Drew
