    3. Steph: I'm no authority on grave markers, but in the "rural" south there are very few marked graves before the mid-1800s. I don't know why but I suspect most people were just too thrifty to spend money on carved stone. Or perhaps there was a fundamentalist reason for a protestant not to do so. My own family cemetery in neighboring Emanuel County has an old section probably dating from the early 1800's with several dozen rock markers (no carving). Surprisingly the rocks don't appear to be native to that immediate area so I suspect they were brought in for that specific purpose. Perhaps in traveling about people would spot a nice sized rock and say, "ooh, that would be a good grave marker." At one time I'm certain family members knew who each stone represented. Unfortunately that verbal chain of knowledge got broken somewhere along the way. I have ancestors who died in Burke County in the early 1800s whose family members could have afforded to purchase a carved marker but apparently did not. That's why I think it was just not important to people of that era. I wish you luck in finding a grave marker for James McMullen but don't be surprised if you don't. Perhaps someone with Gravemarkers of Burke County would do a look-up for you. Also, perhaps there is an expert on grave markers on this list who could enlighten all of us as to why our ancestors are not immortalized in stone. Can anyone tell me if there is a site [url] that has cemetery listings for Burke Cty? I have been to several sites but can't seem to locate one. Have I just missed it or are the "old" Burke cemeteries not on line? I am hoping to find the resting place of my ggggrandfather James [RS] McMullen, b. prob Scotland, 1762 and died bef Aug 1794 in Burke Co--possibly Halifax district-- Ga. Any help greatly appreciated.
