Joan, There is a good bit in the article on EMANUELs and WHITAKERs. I am sending you all I could find. By this I mean I'll send them even when the first names were not David or Benjamin. So here goes: Asa Emanuel is the first name and Levi Emanuel is also listed on a petition (67 total names) asking that the confiscation of estates of Tories be deferred. (Law authorizing the seizure was passed 5/4/1782.) The author thinks this petition was probably in 1783 or 1784. David and John Emanuel signed a petition asking for a pardon for Rhoda Pope in 1797. She was convicted of Larceny and was to receive 20 lashes and was pregnant. (About 60 signed) John Emanuel listed as a Capt. on the Court of a Court Martial trial for Capt. Blassingame Harvey on Mrach 15, 1794. (Harvey was found not guilty.) Of note Hudson Whitaker is listed as the Majoy at this trial and Benjamin Whitaker is listed as a Captain. David Emanuel, Jr. is listed as a Captain for the 3rd Regiment, First Division, Second Brigade, Burke Co., 1798. Int. (?) Emanuel listed on a jugy for trial of Samuel Moore on Feb. 27, 1795 for selling liquor. John Emanuel signed petition(62 signers) asking for a pardon for John Hume Manderson for murder. This was prob. 1796 or 1797. The author says there is a write up in March 16, 1797 issue of the Southern Centinal and Universal Gazette in Augusta GA about this case. Manderson supposedly murdered Sarah Bailey. This is an interesting case for any family members of the involved parties. Jacob Whitaker signed a petition for the pardon of James Taylor. (62 signed) The year is not certain but Gov. Telfair (who the petition was addressed to) served in 1786 and 1790 - 92. Captain Benjamin Whitaker is lised as responsible for a tax district in 1793 and 1790. Capt. John Emanuel is lised as responsible for a tax district in 1790 and 1793. Hudson Whitaker is listed as responsible for a tax district in 1790. In April 1791 evidently there was a fight between Wm. Allen Burton and Blassingame Harvey and both were tried and found guilty. Amos and Hudson Whitaker signed a petition along with 135 others, asking for a pardon for Wm. Allen Burton. The charge was "gouging" since there had been a law passed in GA against gouging in 1787. There was another petition asking for a pardon for Harvey and Hudson Whitaker signed this one along with 123 others. Of interest Harvey lost part of his ears. There is a list of estates and their administrators found in various newspapers. The following Emanuels are included: 1. Estate of Col. Asa Emanuel listed in Feb. 1794 -- David Emanuel is Administrator 2. Estate of Levi Emanuel listed May 9, 1791 with Asa Emanuel as Administrator 3. Estate of Levi Emanuel listed Feb. 1794 and David Emanuel is Administrator 4. Estate of Levi Emanuel listed Nov. 30, 1797 and David Emanuel as Administrator Keep in mind these were listed in different newspapers. Numbers 1 and 3 were listed in the GA Gazette in Savannah. Number 2 was listed in Augusta Chronicle. Number 4 was listed in the Columbia Museum and Savannah Advocate out of Savannah. Hope this helps others as well as you. Sandy
