    1. CROSS - STEVENS - SCARBORO - SPENCE
    2. Is anyone familiar with the CROSS Family of Emanuel County? They lived along the Emanuel-Burke County line, primarily in the area around Coleman's Lake in the northern part of Emanuel County and the Midville area in Burke County. I am trying to locate the parents of my g-g-grandmother, SUSAN CROSS, who was born January 28, 1870 in Emanuel County and died December 24, 1938 in Treutlen County where she is buried at Boiling Springs Church Cemetery. After having given birth to three children out of wedlock, MINNIE CROSS, LITTLETON ENON "JACK" CROSS (my g-grandfather), and REMER CROSS (male), her family disowned her. She moved to Treutlen County, Georgia sometime between 1905 and 1909 and married GEORGE SCARBORO. I think he may have been of the Emanuel County SCARBOROS. They had two children, SHELLY and DELOIS (male) SCARBORO. While these two children were still very young, she and GEORGE separated and he took both children with him to Hazelhurst, Georgia where his grown daughter from a previous marriage lived. DELOIS became so homesick for his mother that GEORGE had to return him to SUSAN. However, he kept SHELLY in Hazelhurst where she was raised by his grown daughter. The 1880 Emanuel County Census lists SUSAN CROSS in the household of LITTLETON J. CROSS and MARY ANN STEVENS (also spelled STEPHENS) and states that she was their granddaughter. This household was in District # 57 and consisted of: Littleton Cross Age 65 Mary Ann Age 63 Wife Lulu (Lula) Age 20 Not Related Susan Age 09 Granddaughter Enaun (Enon) Age 27 Son This ENAUN (also spelled "ENAUN" and "ENAUM" in some records) was ENON A. CROSS who was b. 1854, Georgia; d. 1926, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia near Coleman's Lake; m. LULA "LOU" W. (?); b. 1861, Georgia; d. 1936, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia near Coleman's Lake. My grandmother said SUSAN had an UNCLE ENON and talked very fondly of him. This is problably the same ENON. She even named one of her sons (my g-grandfather) LITTLETON ENON CROSS. When he was a small child, her UNCLE ENON began calling him "JACKBOY" as a nickname and it stuck. He was known throughout his life as JACK CROSS. Considering all of this, I don't think ENON was her father. However, I guess it's not entirely impossible since she also had an older great-uncle named ENON (brother of LITTLETON) who was born about 1815 and married a Bethany (?) about 1835. LITTLETON and MARY ANN also had two more sons that I am aware of. They were: * WILLIAM L. CROSS, b. April 20, 1845, Georgia; d. April 14, 1905, Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery in Emanuel County; m. SARAH J. (?), Abt. 1870; b. July 07, 1837, Georgia; d. March 06, 1902, Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia. * ISAAC "IKE" L. CROSS, b. September 1849, Emanuel County, Georgia; d. Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Hines Church Cemetery in Emanuel County, Georgia. He married JULIA ANN SPENCE January 30, 1870 in Emanuel County, Georgia, daughter of GREEN SPENCE and AMANDA MCGAR. She was born 1856 in Georgia, and died in Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Hines Church Cemetery in Emanuel County, Georgia. Due to their date marriage, I have ruled out ISAAC "IKE" and JULIA ANN SPENCE CROSS. They married January 30, 1870, two days after SUSAN was born so they aren't likely to be her parents. This pretty much narrows it down to WILLIAM L. and SARAH J. CROSS, both of whom I know nothing more about. Does anyone know of this couple or any issue they might have had? Are they listed in the 1880 Emanuel County Census? I thought I had made copies of all the CROSSES in that census, but I might have overlooked WILLIAM. Also, my grandmother recalls SUSAN having a sister called MAE who married and may have moved up around Athens, Georgia. I'm posting everything I have on the Cross Family below in hopes that maybe something might ring a bell. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
