    2. I noticed that the Burke Co. Genealogical Society is having a speaker March 20th by the name of Robert Reeves. He will discuss the book "A Lost Arcadia" by Walter A. Clark. Here is what they say -- "This book details family and historical data regarding the Brothersville/Hephzibah area and nearby parts of northwestern Burke County." Is this book for sale? Has anyone seen it? Sandy

In a message dated 03/18/2000 10:22:25 AM Eastern Standard Time, DonnisRae@webtv.net writes: << I was wondering if you knew what years the English Crown Grants were given in St. George's Parrish (later Burke Co.) Ga. or have any general information about the early settlers? >> The message was not directed to me but I have the following: Gene Lamb General Information: The Royal Charter of June, 1732, given by King George II to the Trustees for Establishing the Colony of Georgia in America, defined the boundaries of the new colony as lying between the Savannah and Altamaha Rivers, extending as far north as those rivers flowed and thence from their sources in a straight line to the South Seas. *********** In 1758, without treaty or permissions from the Indians, an Act of the Assembly created seven parishes, i.e., St. Paul, St. George, St. Matthew, Chrish Church, St. Philip, St., John and St. Andrew. By Royal Proclamation in 1763, the English Crown extended Georgia's southern boundary to the St. Marys River, and by Act of Assembly again, the four new parishes of St. David, St. Patrick, St. Thomas and St. Mary were created from that extension in 1765. Source: Introduction, English Crown Grants in St. George Parish in Ga, 1755-1775, issued by Ben W. Fortson, Jr., Secretary of State and Surveyor General, March 22, 1974 ABRAHAM LAMB The following information was copied from actual plats and surveys received from the Dept. of Archives and History, Atlanta, GA. July 1999. 1767, St George Parrish, 200 acres. Granted on September 1, 1767. Dept of Archives states this plat is lost/unavailable but the grant in Book F, page 352 states "200 acres bounded on all sided by vacant land". 1770, St George Parrish, 200 acres. English Crown Grant. Warrant dated Aug 1767 and surveyed Dec. 1767. "Situated and being in the Parish of St George in our province of Georgia; Bounded North by land of the said grantee & on all other sided by vacant land. South by the Alatamaha River, East by John Manns land, West by Surveyed land and North by Vacant land. One Bounty. This is the actual grant, signed 31 Dec 1784 and registered 5 Jan 1785. Signed by Geo. Handley. Surveyed by Joseph Tamell, Surveyor of the County of Washington. The survey states "Surveyed by virtue of affidavit from under the hand of the Hon. John Habersham, Esquire, president of the Exective Council, dated May 17 & executed June 22nd, 1784". Power of attorney for Abraham. "State of Georgia Lamb, Abraham I do hereby authorize and empower LUKE MANN to petition in my name and stead for a bounty of land which I am entitled to by an act passed at Augusta the 20th of August 178? 3. Hi list. I was reviewing some Jarrell list postings. I came across one dated 15 August 1999 from JanetW111@aon.com. I wondered if she had more info or anyone else on the list had any info...on the following: WILEY P. JARRELL-first wife Martha Miller WILEY P. JARRELL-second wife MARTHA E. MOORE, b. 30 April 1839 md. 9 March 1880 d. 9 June 1909, buried Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetary, Sylvania. MARTHA E. MOORE JARRELL was aunt to JOHN M. FARR, who erected a monument to his Aunt Martha that marks her grave at Oak Grove. JOHN M. FARR was father to Harry Leon Farr, Earl Farr and Carroll Franklin Farr, Sr. There was an administrator's bond in 19/52, Screven County, GA, dated 21 Feb 1891, which names R.H.FARR as administrator of the estate of LEVENIA E. FARR, and signed by R. H. Farr, Charles H. Moore, and W. J. Moore. Wiley P. Jarrell's farm adjoined the farm of William Michael Henderson in the (then) 35th G. M. District of Screven County, GA, and William Michael Henderson, Captain, 5th GA Calvary, CSA, was the father of ANNIE LAURIE HENDERSON who married JOHN M. FARR. There was, and still is, a really big pond by the name of JARRELL POND that belonged to Wiley P. Jarrell's family. Sherman camped about 1 mile from there during the march to the sea. Wiley's sons, I feel sure, died in the War of Northern Agression. There are many Jarrell family members buried at the Middleground Methodist Church Cemetary not too far from there. All this area is located on/very near the Ogeechee River which is the border for Screven County, GA (on the far southwest side) and Bulloch County, GA (Statesboro, GA). Does anyone have any information about any of this? I would really appreciate any help. Carole Farr Drexel in Ft. Worth PS...John M. Farr, nephew to Martha E. Moore Jarrell, was supposed to have gone to Texas and we wondered if he went with some of his Jarrell relatives. Just a hunch.

    3. Recently I came across an article in the old Springfield Herald, of Effingham County, Ga. The article was published on April 16, 1990. Copies also submitted to Effingham County News and ENTERPRIZE-GAZETTE. The submitter was called the "MT. PILGRIM MISSIONARY SOCIETY." Can anyone idenify this society, or the name Mt. Pilgrim? It is obvious from the text that it may well have been from a close area near Effingham Co. The article is in reference to the death of a young "Christian worker" who had recently deceased. His name was GEORGE GROVENSTEIN. A series of resolutions had been set forth and signed by three committee members. One of who I am very interested in, for reaearch purposes. HENRY GABLE, Lula Bishop, and Kate Grey. Any help or suggestions appreciated, Judy Mason 2jv@bellsouth.net

    2. Robert Temples
    3. Dear Researchers: In 1788, James Temples Sr., father of Sarah, moved his family to Burke Co.(later Jefferson Co. area), GA. This family had ties to the Temples in Edgefield Co., SC. We have found no Roberts in the Edgefield area yet and were wondering if they in Georgia at that time. also, is that where the marriage took place? We have found very little on the "Temples" in Jefferson Co. in the time line they were there, 1788-1815. After 1847, she marrys William Proctor. We have no clue on the dispossession of her first husband. We are far from the area, so, any assistance will be appreciated. Robert Temples

    3. Hi All, I'm looking for a Lucy Herrington (maiden name unknown). The 1900 Burke County Census had her listed as being around 70 years old visited by a son Jedediah (born. August 1847). Six of her ten children were living. I am trying to find out who Lucy was. She was widowed by 1900 and had a considerable amount of land and had some land transactions in Screven County (would love for anyone to look and see what else they could find as I'm in NC and don't get home as often as I'd like). If there's any information I would greatly appreciate it. I'm at a total loss. Please advise as I can't find too much more on her besides the Census, a will, and some land records. Thanks, Vrtreena R. Jenkins
