Patsy, Could you check if there was a Newton Marion DAVIS , or John F. DAVIS Jr. listed among the Burke Co. Confederate Soldiers. In the Burke County Cemetery book, under the Mallard Cemetery, there is a footnote that refers to the "History of the Mallard Family", cited in the "Introduction". It says it is a useful additional source. I have been to the Mallard cemetery in Girard, and have read about the Mallard House, in the "History of Burke County", which is right next to the Mallard Cemetery, but have not learned much about the Mallard Family. I thought this book may help me. Does anyone have the Cemetery book that could give me the information from the introduction on the "History of the Mallard Family", or someone have this book. My link to the Mallards is this: (I am looking for information on Arnold and Catherine parents) Arnold A. Don't know if this relates, but in a June 1914 edition of the Forest Blade newspaper, it shows 2 court cases between Fannie Scarboro vs. S.H. Scarboro.

Hi Listmembers! It has been awhile since I have posted my query re Martha BELL so decided to try again. Martha was enumerated Burke Co. 1820. She had received a land grant, 1817. Is anyone researching Martha and her family? Thanks. Fred fpowellsr@starpower.net
Is anyone familiar with the CROSS Family of Emanuel County? They lived along the Emanuel-Burke County line, primarily in the area around Coleman's Lake in the northern part of Emanuel County and the Midville area in Burke County. I am trying to locate the parents of my g-g-grandmother, SUSAN CROSS, who was born January 28, 1870 in Emanuel County and died December 24, 1938 in Treutlen County where she is buried at Boiling Springs Church Cemetery. After having given birth to three children out of wedlock, MINNIE CROSS, LITTLETON ENON "JACK" CROSS (my g-grandfather), and REMER CROSS (male), her family disowned her. She moved to Treutlen County, Georgia sometime between 1905 and 1909 and married GEORGE SCARBORO. I think he may have been of the Emanuel County SCARBOROS. They had two children, SHELLY and DELOIS (male) SCARBORO. While these two children were still very young, she and GEORGE separated and he took both children with him to Hazelhurst, Georgia where his grown daughter from a previous marriage lived. DELOIS became so homesick for his mother that GEORGE had to return him to SUSAN. However, he kept SHELLY in Hazelhurst where she was raised by his grown daughter. The 1880 Emanuel County Census lists SUSAN CROSS in the household of LITTLETON J. CROSS and MARY ANN STEVENS (also spelled STEPHENS) and states that she was their granddaughter. This household was in District # 57 and consisted of: Littleton Cross Age 65 Mary Ann Age 63 Wife Lulu (Lula) Age 20 Not Related Susan Age 09 Granddaughter Enaun (Enon) Age 27 Son This ENAUN (also spelled "ENAUN" and "ENAUM" in some records) was ENON A. CROSS who was b. 1854, Georgia; d. 1926, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia near Coleman's Lake; m. LULA "LOU" W. (?); b. 1861, Georgia; d. 1936, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia near Coleman's Lake. My grandmother said SUSAN had an UNCLE ENON and talked very fondly of him. This is problably the same ENON. She even named one of her sons (my g-grandfather) LITTLETON ENON CROSS. When he was a small child, her UNCLE ENON began calling him "JACKBOY" as a nickname and it stuck. He was known throughout his life as JACK CROSS. Considering all of this, I don't think ENON was her father. However, I guess it's not entirely impossible since she also had an older great-uncle named ENON (brother of LITTLETON) who was born about 1815 and married a Bethany (?) about 1835. LITTLETON and MARY ANN also had two more sons that I am aware of. They were: * WILLIAM L. CROSS, b. April 20, 1845, Georgia; d. April 14, 1905, Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery in Emanuel County; m. SARAH J. (?), Abt. 1870; b. July 07, 1837, Georgia; d. March 06, 1902, Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Cross Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia. * ISAAC "IKE" L. CROSS, b. September 1849, Emanuel County, Georgia; d. Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Hines Church Cemetery in Emanuel County, Georgia. He married JULIA ANN SPENCE January 30, 1870 in Emanuel County, Georgia, daughter of GREEN SPENCE and AMANDA MCGAR. She was born 1856 in Georgia, and died in Emanuel County, Georgia - Buried at Hines Church Cemetery in Emanuel County, Georgia. Due to their date marriage, I have ruled out ISAAC "IKE" and JULIA ANN SPENCE CROSS. They married January 30, 1870, two days after SUSAN was born so they aren't likely to be her parents. This pretty much narrows it down to WILLIAM L. and SARAH J. CROSS, both of whom I know nothing more about. Does anyone know of this couple or any issue they might have had? Are they listed in the 1880 Emanuel County Census? I thought I had made copies of all the CROSSES in that census, but I might have overlooked WILLIAM. Also, my grandmother recalls SUSAN having a sister called MAE who married and may have moved up around Athens, Georgia. I'm posting everything I have on the Cross Family below in hopes that maybe something might ring a bell. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Does anyone have historical information for the Hopeful Baptist Church in Burke Co similiar to what Ms. Dolorus Thompson has kindly posted for the Bark Camp Church? One of the first preachers, if not THE first, was Rev. Edmund Byne who brought his large family from King and Queen Co VA after the Rev War. Edmund Byne is my ancestor. He is presumed to be buried in the graveyard of this church. Thanks for your help. Ed T of PGH

List Members Bark Camp Baptist Church is a very old Baptist Church located a mile or so north of Midville. Following is a brief history of the ministers and the charter members of the church. This is typed from an article appearing in Georgia Genealogical Magazine in 1981, pages 100 - 107 and submitted by Mrs. Robert L. Green. As time permits, I will type and submit some of the earlier membership lists from this church. At the end of the article a note states "The minutes of this church and the membership lists are to be found on microfilm at hte Georgia Department of Archives and History, drawer 35, reel 79." Don't know if they're still there or not but Georgia Baptist records are archived at Mercer University in Macon. Their website lists their holdings. I have seen several questions regarding the railways and the history here in these areas. I have several extensive articles and histories regarding the subject that i have collected over the years. I also am in contact with a local railroad historian and can perhaps answer some of your questions. the articles and published histories of these railway in this area are quite well done, including some photos. They can be found in local libraries. If you are not in area I can copy and send them to you. The histories run into each other of course as the rail lines grew over the years. And they changed hands quite often. Unfortunately, there is not much background on the actual working men, just those who financed or started the lines. But, my contact mentioned above may be able to answer some of your questions, or offer more reading material. This person is just so thorough in his interest-is not on line-and has done many historical booklets for our local Historical Society. Just send me your questions. If you want hard copies of the articles I hve send me your mailing address please. Too much to just scan and send. I too hve a general interest in the industry as some of my ancestors started those beganning logging lines, or worked for for them. This is why I have the material. Holly, I have some railroad info here encompassed the development of the local railways of Screven, Burke and Effingham (Bulloch, too) Quite lengthy! the lines changed hands as well as names. I can cop all of what I have if you would like it. or I can look for a specific date for a name if you can supply it. Let me know. Might take me a day or two to copy it all but can drop it in mail to you. The material came from several different sources and has some photos as well. I have always been interested in it becuase of my ties with the Brinson and Foy lines. And two of my great-grandfathers brothers worked for the railroads. Let me know if this is suitable with you. how are you, haven't heard from you in ages! For whatever this is worth: In reading various Census' I have noticed groups of persons listed as "working on the railroad." I suspect they were living in some type of camp when the enumerators arrived.
