John, my Great Grandfather Thomas Absalom Dutton enlisted from his military records I received from National Archives on May 6, 1862 in Savannah as a Private. On May 16, 1862 he was mustered into "I" Co. 54th Georgia Infantry. His enlistment is signed by Captain Rawls for a period of 3 years or war. He was paid a bounty of $50.00, he apparently received an issue of clothing as I have the receipt for that. He was present at roll call Nov & Dec 1863, then another receipt for clothing in 1864. but they were unable to find any more records for him. I know that story has been told down through the generations. That when he came home finally that the family cook wouldn't let Mr. Tom in the house, he was so dirty, that she made him go out behind the shed and take a hot bath with lye and so on. She said she didn't want any of those bugs getting in the house. If you would like a copy of his records I will be glad to send it to you. I had these records verified when I was joining the UDC back in 1980. Jackie

I am glad you asked. I thought I had the correct answer but then as I looked back over my information and resources I realized they are the not the same person and my earlier conclusion was incorrect. Andrew died young after two possible marriages. His second wife Sarah Margaret Williams (I believe at this point) married Joseph Dutton - Andrew's brother. I think what is confusing is that Joseph Dutton is buried next to Sarah Williams Dutton at New Hope Church Cemetery in Bulloch County, GA -- while marriage records in Bulloch County show Sarah Williams married Andrew Dutton. I made a mistake in assuming they were the same person. Since you raised the question I have reviewed my information with the sources I have and have revised my "Draft" of the Dutton family. There is still so much that is confusing and missing in this family. I believe that many Dutton children were reared in households of other relatives but the early census records do not show their true relationship. Below is the latest DRAFT of what I believe the early Dutton family looked like. I hope others working on this family will offer corrections and new information. The history of this family is far from complete. If you copied the former information I posted earlier into your records please make the necessary changes in PENCIL -- this too will most likely change with the next email and shared information. I have included my references for anyone to check out. Sincerely, Alfred Chassereau Descendants of Henry Dutton, (JP) Justice of the Peace/Bulloch County Generation No. 1 1. Hi Al. I was reviewing this message and since I am always trying to piece together my Henderson line through, it seems, all the other surnames around instead of Henderson <bg!>, I was especially interested in the ? entry of yours in reference as to who the wife of Robert Williams might be. Robert and Sarah Williams were the witnesses for a deed in Screven County, if memory serves me correctly, of my Michael Henderson. So my ears perked up at the question of a wife for Robert. I found the following in the abstracts from Screven County Deed Book A, 1794-1805, compiled and typed by Huldah Kelly for the Statesboro Library. "p. 27. Aug. 15, 1792. Effingham Co. SARAH WILLIAMS, wife of ROBERT WILLIAMS, to SUKY MIZELL, for 5 shillings, a Negro girl named Dina, a stock of cattle and all her claim in the personal estate of her father ROBERT DIXON, dec'd. Wit: MATTHEW JONES, JAMES JONES, LUKE MIZELL, JP. Rec: July 6, 1795." So perhaps the answer to your question about the wife of Robert is SARAH DIXON Williams. As a FARR, I am always interested in the Williams and Moore line from Screven County and Bulloch County, and the Jones and Young families of both counties, too. [I guess, technically, you could throw in Jenkins County and Birdville, and Brooks and Thomas Counties, too!] Have you any info to tie these lines together prior to their coming to Screven, then Bulloch counties? Can anyone tell me who were the parents of Adna Mixon that married George Dickson in Bulloch Co? Thanks, Linda
Ann, I found a listing for a May 2, 1803 deed, Deed Book A, p. 355...Screven County, Georgia Records, 1794-1805... Sam'l Parrish, of Tattnall County, to James Caswell, of Scriven Co., for 200 Spanish Milled Dollars, 250 acres on Great Ogeechee River, known by the name of Odum's Old Survey, originally granted to Abraham Odum, bounded on all sides by vacant land at the original survey but now on the e. by representatives of James Jones of chatham Co., dec'd, on the n. by Johnston Prentor, s. by Great Ogeechee. Wit: Wm. Stewart, James Archer. Rec: Nov. 2, 1803. and then same deed book, page 381, Jan. 17, 1804. Samuel Parrish of Tattnall Co., to Dennis Colson of Scriven Co., for $500., 250 acres in Scriven County on the n. side of the Ogeechee River adjoining lands of James Jones on n.e. side, John Storey on the w., with lands of Woods and James Jones on the other side, originally granted to Abraham Odum, Jr., in 1767, by George III. Wit: Benjamin Bleckinton, James Archer. Rec: Dec. 31, 1804. This, I think, would have been across the Ogeechee River from Bulloch County. Tattnall, I think, was cut from part of Bulloch. Perhaps all this should also go to the Bulloch County list. There are still wonderful Blitch researchers living in Bulloch County, along the Ogeechee River. Carole p.s. Will keep my eyes open for Blitch and Parrish. ----- Original Message ----- From: "ann parkinson" <[email protected]> To: "G A Drexel" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 11, 2001 10:51 AM Subject: Re: [GASCREVE] Re: Sarah McCall > Hi, > My 'brick wall' is the parents of Hiram Parish b. > 1819 in GA (on one cnesus & SC on another). George, do you have the entry from Mrs. Register's book on Bulloch County Genealogical Material from page 129, which reads..."Ordered that Henry Dalton (or Dutton) and Andrew Wilson be appt. admrs. of the estate of Samuel Wilson, deceased. Also, the same day, ordered that Henry Dutton and Andrew Wilson be appt. exrs. of the LW&T of Absalom Hagin, dec'd. in accordance with said Will. and more about those two estates. Morning Margaret & John, and all the rest of the Dutton cousins, Isn't it great all this activity on our Dutton families. Wish I could make it back to both Bullock and Effingham Co. this summer to do more research. I did find out one interesting bit of information. My G.Grandfather and my Grandfather were both Thomas ABSALOM Dutton and I always felt that it must surly be a family name. Then when I received the information from Alfred Chassereau, I found out that Sarah Hagan (Hagin) who married to Samuel Dutton, her father was Absalom Hagan. What a thrill. Now if I can find the information as to where Samuel & Sarah are buried I would really be happy. Then yesterday when the information from George Flake came I am now wondering, when Sarah died. In the 1850 census she is listed along with Samuel and the children, then in the 1860 census she is not listed. In doing research on the family I have found that along with my Thomas Absalom who served in the 54th. Reg. GA Regulars, CSA enlisted as a private; also his brother Zedakiah E. served in the 54th Regular Ga., he enlisted as a private. Then the information you sent me that Andrew did as well. William H. Dutton was listed in the 54th Inf.Reg, CSA and transferred to 1st. Troops & Defense Reg. GA. Then John Welsey in the Toombs guard, but took the oath of allegiance to the US Government. Wonder why he did this??? I have always wondered this since the time in 1980 when I sent for papers for Thomas Absalom to confirm his military record for my joining the Daughters of the Confederacy. Why Andrew would be in the entire war from June 1861 to March 1865, then sign the oath? Well our families continue to grow and really enjoy all this input. Now would like to find out where Henry Dutton came from in Mass.and who were his parents and where they came from, and for what reason he ended up in Bullock Co. I had an e-mail, a couple years ago that he might have been in the War of 1812 and came to the region at that time?? Any thoughts on this. Have a nice day. Jackie in California

The only Andrew Dutton listed in the 1860 Bulloch C. Census, does not list any of the children listed in the Common School Fund list. His wife, Sarah Martha Wilson, is too young to have had these children and they were not married until 1857. Could Andrew been married before 1857 to another woman? I have a genealogical interest in Sarah Ann Waters, the daughter of my gggrandparents Isaac Waters and Jane E. Barber. In accordance with information from Alfred Chassereau, email: [email protected], April 8, 2001, Sarah Ann Waters married John C. Dutton on 12/24/1878 in Bulloch County. Also she died in Jacksonville, FL on 1/9/1931. I would appreciate any information on this family that might be available. The information, if I am not mistaken, showed John C. Dutton as the son of Andrew Joseph Dutton. From the census information shown below, it seems more likely that John C. Dutton is the son of Henry Dutton and his second wife, Ann Theresa Cox who he married about 2/6/1845 in Bulloch County. It is also likely that Joseph and Andrew are separate sons of Henry Dutton and Mary Ann Wilson who he married on 1/21/1818 in Bulloch County. It appears that Mary Ann died about a year after the birth of their daughter Martha. Martha b. 1/28/1842 - Mary Ann d. 2/10/1843. Henry Dutton died 6/27/1851. John C. A possible event is that John C. was orphaned to James E. Hagan after Henry died. Note that John C. Dutton, FN 301, Joseph Dutton, FN 303, Samuel Dutton, FN 309, and Andrew Dutton, FN 310, lived in close proximity to each other. John C. Dutton would not have appeared in the 1850 census with Henry Dutton because he was not born until 1851, according to the 1860 census (however, Al shows him being born 3/1/1850 in which case he should have appeared in the 1850 census.) A possible event is that John C. was orphaned to James E. Hagan after Henry died. Note that John C. Dutton, FN 301, Joseph Dutton, FN 303, Samuel Dutton, FN 309, and Andrew Dutton, FN 310, lived in close proximity to each other.
