Below you will find information about what happened to some of the pioneering families that lived early on in Screven, Bulloch and perhaps a few surrounding counties before and around 1830 and after. Sometimes it helps to find this kind of information to help see how families moved to different areas together, etc. Carole Farr Drexel 1825-1987, pg.90 Dates of birth/death from gravestone -- LaVonta Sue Caldwell >From Valdosta Daily Times, June 3, 1993 by Dean Poling, Times Staff Writer: "Most folks think of Highway 41 North as the road to Hahira from Valdosta. But also along Lowndes County's stretch of the highway rests the small community of Mineola. Some folks don't even realize Mineola is even on the road; nonetheless, this community has a rich tradition following most South Georgia towns and communities. Years after the Seminole and Cherokee Indians left the South Georgia/North Florida area, a fellow by the name of Remer Young bought a good bit of land in the northwestern section of Lowndes County. He started a plantation which covered most of what is now Mineola. In the mid 1830s, Isaiah H. Tillman was a Hawkinsville storeowner. He bought some of Young's land and lived with one of the Youngs for a spell -- at least until his own house was finished. During that time, Tillman fell for Matthew Young's daughter, Arminta. Tillman married her and together they moved into his new house on his parcel of land. Meanwhile, more families were moving onto land close to the Young plantation. The Howell, Kendall, Barfield, Dampier, Hodges, Scruggs, and Copeland families were among these early settlers. By 1888, the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad took an interest in the area and built a rail line though the community. As in most towns' cases, a post office and a depot soon followed. Considering the good fortune of getting a railroad, John Young and J. T. Roberts built a sawmill along the tracks near the depot named the Mineola Station. In keeping with that name, the two men named their sawmill Mineola Mill Company. By the late 1890s, the Coleman family built a turpentine still near the depot. Farmers shipped their goods to Valdosta by train. The railroad made life a little easier for the farmers. Before the train, they'd have to haul their crops eight miles to Valdosta by wagon. The coming of Highway 41 spelled the end for the trains as most farmers took their produce to Valdosta by truck. In the 1940s, train stops were discontinued." >From pg. 185 "History of Lowndes County Georgia 1825-1941 By General James Jackson Chapter NSDAR, Valdosta, GA, 1995: Mineola "Among the early settlers of the county was Mr. Remer Young, whose large plantation included the present village of Mineola. It was here he reared a most interesting family. John Young (later of Savannah), Mrs. W. F. Pendleton, Mrs. John Roberts, Mrs. Henry Peeples, Mrs. Jerry B. Jones, Jim Young, Mrs. W. B. Fender and Mrs. Austin of Atlanta were his children. After the railroad came through that section, the Mineola Mill Company was organized by Messrs. John Young and J. T. Roberts, which they operated for many years, later selling to W. S. Fender. Nearby lived other early families, among them Mr. Isaiah H. Tillman, who came to Lowndes County in 1834 from Hawkinsville, where he had been a young merchant. He stayed, until his own house was completed, in the home of Matthew Young, across the river in that portion of the county which later became Brooks. Having married Arminta Young, a daughter of his host, he moved into the new home where he continued to live until his death in 1896. Mr. Tillman was a progressive farmer and inspired his son, Henry Young Tillman, with the same love of the land. Other farms in this locality have been owned by the Howell, Kendall, Barfield, Dampier, Hodges, Scruggs, and other families. The Young farms are now owned by the J. A. Dasher family, C. L. Smith, J. T. Mathis and Henry Young Tillman, who owns also the farm north of the Young place, formerly farmed by his father, Henry Y. Tillman. Since the saw mill no longer operates in Mineola, the only industry left is the turpentine still now owned by Mr. Coleman, who has operated there for many years

Jeanette, Thomas and Mary Duggar Futch are buried in the Futch Cemetery in Cook County, Georgia. At the time of their deaths they lived in then Berrien County. The cemetery is one very well kept and is located on current Futch property. Most of the Futch markers in the cemetery are of beautiful white marble. The perimeter of the cemetery is surrounded with a nice white vinyl fence. There is not a problem in getting to the cemetery....it is appreciated by the landowner(s) if you called first before driving back onto their property. As one would expect, Thomas' tall flat marker is very old; made from concrete. At one time, it was painted with white paint, which now is chipping off. The old inscription is fairly readable but it does take a little time to figure out. Last year whenever we visited the cemetery, there had been a new marble marker placed directly in front of the old. Mary's marker is white, easy to read but hard to photograph in the early sun...without adding a little chalk, engraving doesn't show up in photo. The dates on Thomas and Mary's markers are as follows: Thomas Futch Born March 7, 1799 Died June 22, 1869 Mary Wife of Thomas Futch January 22, 1799 January 6, 1882 The marriage date I have is July 24, 1816 and in Chatham County, Georgia. The source is from Huxford and agreed he has had mistakes (as in all gen publications) but I'll keep this until otherwise informed of another source. I too, have seen the other date/discrepancy you mentioned. Hope this helps a little or perhaps helps someone else on the list. George, thank you so much! This puts a whole new light on a long-time question for me concerning Elizabeth Lastinger. In looking for the family of Welthann/Welthy Ann Duggar, I can't tell you how many times I looked at the Henry "Driggers" family and wondered....... I also seem to recall seeing in a source (can't remember which one now) the name "Duggan" that should have been "Duggar". Refering to "The Futch Family" by Rose E. Bell, page 549: "VI. Margaret (Mary Ann) Futch was born in Georgia about 1803, being age 47 on the 1850 census of Leon County, Florida. On January 3, 1826, in Bulloch County, she married William Duggar, who died on January 19, 1857. (Bulloch County Book 2A.) They ( William and Margaret Duggar) moved to Leon County, Florida about 1848-1849 and appeared on the 1850 census of that county, this record has the following: William Duggar, age 47, a native of Georgia; his wife, Mary Ann, age 47, also born in Georgia; and ten children, all born in Thomas County, Georgia, except the youngest, who was unnamed in 1850. These children as shown on the 1850 census were: Mary, age 22; James, age 21; Simeon, age 18; William, age 16, Welthy Ann, age 15; Isaac, age 14; Elizabeth, age 12; Emma, age 8; Daniel, age 6; and an unnamed male, age 1 year. (Census was taken in November 1850.) As may be noted, their daughter Welthy Ann Duggar was about 20 years older than Wealthy Ann, the daughter of Henry W. Dugger.. George H. I found this from an old query. Purvis, Henry Married Hester Ann Woodrum 3/17/1836 Bulloch Co. Georgia Purvis, John married Zaphi Cone 1/3/1808 Bulloch Co. Ga. Purvis, Avery Married Sarah McCall 6/7/1827 Chatham Co. GA My question is this. Can anyone tell me about John Purvis and Zaphi Cone? I am trying to find the parents of Charlotte Purvis b 1830's who married John REDDISH in Tattnall Co in 1856. She may be a 'orphaned' sister to LaFayette Purvis. There is a Zilpha Purvis on 1850 census for Appling Co. No husb. Did john die or divorce her or just be away fishing? Any information will be appreciated. Elaine
Jimmy, A.K. Register's book, "Bulloch County Georgia Genealogical Source Material", p. 159, does show the marriage of William Duggar and Margaret Futch on Jan. 3, 1826. the only other info I have about William Duggar and possible children is this from Rootsweb WorldConnect and a few other family tree websites but I haven't seen their sources, so I don't know about accuracy. Most of my info is on the Futch side. In response to the Duggar Family Forum comment on Wealthy Ann, I found William Duggar married Margaret Futch on January 3, 1826. This is documented in Bulloch County, Georgia Marriages 1796 to 1850 on USGenWeb Archives. duende37@aol.com
