Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 From: "cgrafton" <cgrafton@bellsouth.net> To: <cjarrard@earthlink.net> Subject: Bryan County Query Name=Charlie Copeland Grafton Query=I would like to correspond with anyone who is a descendant of James COPELIN/COPELAND, born approximately 1775 in Bryan/Chatham/Effingham County, GA. He married Dorcas ROBERTS. Their children were Martha Ellen, (Patsy - married Sanuel HENDERSON); Mary Ann, (Polly - married James REEVES); Isabel (married Peter HELVESTON); Isham (married Rebecca WELLS). James was given a land grant on Three Rivers Lake, (MS Territory) for 640 acres in 1797. The area later became Baldwin Co., AL. and then Washington Co., AL. By 1805 the land belonged to the "Heirs of J. COPELIN." I have no proof that James ever physically lived on the property. However, there is proof that Dorcas did live there. So, I suppose it is possibe that he died in GA., and not in AL. Some say Dorcas was part Indian. I have no proof of this either. Who were James's parents? Who were Dorcas's parents? I would like to compare/share information with anyone from this family; however, at this time I have little to offer. I do know that this James COPELIN/COPELAND is the grandfather of James COPELAND, the noted outlaw from the Pascagoula River Valley, Jackson Co., MS, who was executed in Perry Co., MS in 1857. I have seen the COPELIN/COPELAND name spelled a variety of ways - even within the same family. Any information in the research of this family would be greatly appreciated.
