bob If Ann had a sister name Caroline is only supposition. She is thought to have been the daughter of William Dugger of North Carolina. Here's some of the info I have on her: Source: The Duke Family I, c 1979, Evelyn D. Brandenberger, pages 434- Ann was born in NC in 1796, and was probably the daughter of John DUGGER. The Duke Family I; page 435: "In 1819 William Duke of Bryan Co., GA drew Lot 57, 14th Dis Irwin Co. On Dec 15, 1847, Ann Dukes of Chatham Co., GA, formerly Ann Haymans of the county of Bryan, and Joseph G. Blanco of the county of Paulding for fifty dollars sells 202 1/2 acres known as Lot 165 in the 11th Dis of carroll Co., GA. The said Lot was drawn to the name Ann Haymans as a widow of Bryan Co. Witnessed by Patrick Lanier and James M. Butler. Proved Dec. 25,1947 and signed by the mark of Ann Dukes (Carroll Co., GA., Deeds, Bk. F, p. 203. The lots in Carroll were raffled in 1827." The Census Report of 1830 finds William Duke listed with his family on the Black Creek lands with James Alexander, Isaac Harvey, Hiram Walker, Jesse Butler, and the Clantons for neighbors. Although William was not in the 1840 census, his wife, Ann, is found in the same location, listed in the same area with the same neighbors. When the 1850 Census was taken Ann Duke and her two youngest children had also left, presumably to join William Duke. The records of Bryan County were burned in 1864 but it appears that William and Ann Duke had sold or otherwise disposed of the land. Ann's son, William Haymans had married Mary Ann Clanton and lived nearby. In 1847 a list of the Bryan Co., school children included Ann's youngest son, James William DUKE as well as children of neighbors. By her 1st husband Ann Haymans Duke had two children: William H. Haymans, born March 12, 1816 and died Aug 21, 1909. Her 2nd child by Haymans was Mary Ann Haymans, born Jan. 25, 1820. The info I have in my records for CAROLINE DUGGER is as follows: "There is no record showing that Caroline Dugger and Ann Dugger are sisters. I detached them from the same parents for this reason. I will research this more and try to find out where they are related. It may be that they were possibly cousins, instead of sisters." I guess that doesn't help an awful lot. Afraid I haven't done a lot of reseach on this line lately. You have opened a line for me, I'll have to get back to it. If I find anything out, I'll let you know. Thanks! Diane, Thanks. Caroline seems to have been a Duggar name. My g-g-grandfather Daniel Claotn married Caroline (possibly Mary Caroline) Duggar about 1814. Both of them appear to have died early and there's a huge gap in family knowledge. For example, I've seen genealogis indicating her father was a William Duggar but some of these Bryan-Bulloch County genealogies appear to be based on supposition and legend as much as information. |I'm hoping to gather info on the Duggars to sort it out. All those Clantons in that area seem to have sprung from a Charles Clanton and Christianne Etheridge who moved there about 1800, probably from the Carolinas. Interested in hearing from anyone researching the CLANTON and related Duggar families of Bryan County. Bob
Bob, My ggrandfather, William DUKES (B 1801) was married to Ann DUGGER (b 1796). She was also married to a Jeremiah HAYMANS, and had two children, William and Mary Ann. William and Ann had 5 children, one of whom was my grandmother Caroline DUKES. Caroline (1804-1901) married James Calvin MARSH (1823-1899) ON 2/4/1850; however, she first married James Henry CLANTON (1824-1908) in 1840. Don't know the story about why the married/why they divorced? or what happened, but I have a lot of Clanton's in my files. Caroline is buried in the Hendrix Cemetery in Statesboro, GA.
