SAGA endeavors to meet the following organizational objectives: To promote and encourage interest in the science of genealogy and biographical history, the compilation of accurate and complete genealogies, and the preservation of genealogical and historical records; To foster education and training in genealogy through classes, lectures, forums, and special workshops to members and to the general public; To locate genealogical and historical records and promote their availability to the public through cooperation with record depositories and other organizations; and To disseminate information on research techniques and procedures, special collections, original records, genealogical and historical publications, and news pertinent to genealogy and history. Genealogy News, the SAGA newsletter, is published monthly. It contains information about upcoming meetings and minutes of previous meetings. In addition, the newsletter includes informational tidbits and queries from genealogists from all over the world. Seminars are offered for both beginner and intermediate genealogists. Computer seminars are being planned as more genealogists are using this medium to find their ancestors. Regular meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 PM, except in December. Refreshments are served prior to the meeting beginning at 6:30 PM. Locations and speakers are announced through the SAGA newsletter and the area newspapers and television. Guest speakers have been area genealogists, authors, and professionals from state archives and historical agencies. SAGA is a non-profit 501c3 organization. Your tax deductible contributions are greatly appreciated. Any questions should be directed to President, Nancy Birkheimer at (912) 238-1962 or NBSAV@aol.com.

    2. Carl Jarrard
    3. From: TINAWITCHYWITCH@aol.com Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 23:14:01 EDT Searching for information on the marriages of A. S. HARVEY. I believe he was married twice - first to a woman known only as Babe, mother of Thomas and Georgia Harvey, and second to Anna (or Indianna) SHUMAN (possibly formerally DOWNS). I believe Anna had a daughter named Thelma. And I have learned from deed records that Indianna shuman was the heit of Georgia Ann Shuman. Most curious about Babe, since she would be my great, great grandmother. Thanks Tina

    1. [GABRYAN] Increase in Fees at the SSA (SS-5; etc.)
    2. Gerald Gieger
    3. I have just discovered that the SSA is raising the price by 286% for the most valuable tool that genealogists request, the SS-5 form, Original Application for SS Number... It is going UP from its present $7 to $27, effective 1 July 2001. Reference: <http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm#_Toc517745431> This is untenable, since many people who do genealogy are older retired folks on fixed income... and this large increase appears to be intended to discourage the public from access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act. How can it cost $27 to receive a request, then make and mail a copy of the one page document??? ...Government is not intended to be making a profit... The $7 seems high, when you actually evaluate the task...and Researching costs more...Could it be that they have some awfully high-paid clerks...and/or interns...??? Since anything can be proven by statistics, I don't believe their "analysis" but you might want to make your representatives in Congress aware of this... Senate Addresses <http://www.senate.gov/> House Addresses <http://www.house.gov/> President George W. Bush: <president@whitehouse.gov> Vice President Dick Cheney: <vice.president@whitehouse.gov> Assistant-Secretary for HHS: <Sandra.Eubanks-Brown@hhs.gov> Notify all your Genelogical buddies, too??? 3. This the same virus that was circulating under another name (W32.Badtrans.13312@mm) several weeks ago...YOU should NEVER try to open an attachment unless you ask the person who appears to have sent it, or you are expecting it to come... This virus blocks the senders mailbox from receiving any mail from all the people whom it sends messages to, thereby keeping the ones it infects from notifying the source that they have the virus... 2. << AL,,WE ARE TALKING ABOUT JOHN CLARK DAVIS B NOV 18 1828 MARRIED TO SARAH MITCHELL ON 1/25/ 1850 ,BURIED IN THE DAVIS MARTIN CEMETERY,SON OF LEVI DAVIS AND SUSANNAH BRAGG?? JOHN >> John, below are the children of John Clarke Davis and his wife Sarah Jane Mitchell Davis. Their children are my double cousins -- I am a direct descendant of Levi Davis and Susannah Bragg Davis (parents of John Clarke Davis) and Uriah Mitchell and his wife Elizabeth (parents of Sarah Jane Mitchell). They are all my GGG-grandparents. John C. Davis and Sarah Jane Mitchell Davis had a son William Daniel (Dan) Davis who was a blacksmith in Statesboro, GA and is buried in Eastside Cemetery. I published a family history (Mitchell Family) in 1994 that details these families. The "double" comes in through John Clark's sister Hester Davis who married William Wesley Mitchell, brother of Sarah Jane Mitchell. Hester and Wm. Wesley are my GG-Grandparents. I suspect brothers of John Clarke Davis may have been William (Willie) Shep Davis' father -- but I don't have enough information about those Davis lines to connect him to any of them. See an outline of Levi and Susannah Bragg Davis family below. Any suggestions? Can anyone provide more information about these Davis lines?
