    3. Good morning, Anita. I was going to suggest that you start at the Brooks Co. GA web page @ <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/brooks.htm> but checked the page out again this morning and saw that you had already registered the BURNEY and EVERETT surnames. If you haven't already, you could call the Probate Judge's office (The Ordinary) at 912/263-5567 to ask them to check the marriage books for these surnames. I learned while completing my research in Brooks Co. that they initially kept separate marriage records for "Whites and Coloreds". I even found one of my white relatives listed under "Colored". Perhaps she was considered "Colored" because she was Native American. I checked the Quitman telephone directory for BURNEY and EVERETT and found the following: BURNEY, Roy A., Jr., Hickory Head Plantation - 912/263-9743 EVERETT, Mary, Route 2 - 912/263-8776 "A Survey of Brooks County Cemeteries" Old Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery located south of Highway 122, Tallokas District, Page 6: BURNEY, Amanda Hicks, b. March 6, 1835, d. April 11, 1921 BURNEY, Gaston, b. Dec. 23, 1838, d. June 8, 1896 Columbia Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery is located approximately 12 miles south of Quitman off the Quitman-Madison, FL road to Nankin. Turn right onto dirt road at Nankin. The church is a short distance on the left. Page 34 EVERETT, Robert F., b. Feb. 8, 1883, d. Oct. 24, 1966 EVERETT, Jessie Rambo, b. March 17, 1880, d. Jan. 15, 1964 w/o Robert F. EVERETT. Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery located at Dixie on the Barwick Road. I believe these cemeteries are usually regarded as white cemeteries. I learned while I was in Quitman in September 1999 that the genealogical society had asked the African-American community if they would work with them to complete surveys of their cemeteries. You may want to contact Alene Kitchens at 912/263-8880 to see if she can give you a contact name for the African-American community in Brooks County. Do you live near Quitman and Brooks Co., GA, Anita? I hope some of this information is helpful to you. Faye Jones Yager - Alexandria, MN -----Original Message----- From: A.
