Any information about that railroad would be appreciated. For those who don't remember them, the old South Ga. & West Coast (of Fla.!) RR was known as the "Slow Going and Worse Coming." This book will list and briefly describe all Civil War manuscript collections held by organizations in this state. Due to the large number of such organizations, I cannot visit them all. I need a couple of volunteers to help me with Brooks County. The task involves visiting the Brooks County Historical Society, the Quitman-Brooks Cty Genealogical Society, the Brooks Cty Library, and the Quitman-Brooks History Museum to see if they have any unpublished Civil War era letters or diaries. After that a brief description of the item is all I need. In most cases this entire process can be completed in an hour or two. All volunteers will be credited for their work in the foreword of the book. This work will be of great importance to historians and genealogist all across the nation. If you would like to help me, please contact me. Regards, David Slay d1861@aol.com

Rebecca, I checked the index of Brooks County Georgia-Echoes of its People for the names of Ola McALISTER and Cassie GREENE. This is what I found for Ola McALLISTER (note, there were two L's) in the index: Pages 89 and 90, Sand Hill Community (Sand Hill Schools)--Excerpts from Article by Leona Copeland. "...Central School appears to have been organized about 1894, located between the Wallace Peek and Raymond Gay families' homes. Moody Griffin and Vernon Elmore remember their teachers, sisters Ola and Agnes McAllister. One teacher was in charge there a term; then the other sister would teach a term, only five or six months of school. Both these men remember when Sand Hill was built, four nice rooms and large front porch, with side entrance to the two rooms in the back part of building..." Index states: Page 315, ? McAllister was 2nd m. for Elizabeth RAMSEY, b. 1830. Page 90, Agnes, and Ola, Page 4, Asa F., Page 112, Chrysterbell, Lorenso, Modena, Roy, Will, and Winifred. Let me know about the other McALLISTER names. If they are yours, I'll let you know what I find on those pages. Brooks Co. Ga Queries Forum A new message, "Davises," was posted by Earl Davis on Mon, 27 Mar 2000 Surname: Davis --- NAME: Earl Davis EMAIL: edavis@midsouth.rr.com DATE: Mar 27 2000 URL: http:// QRYTEXT: Here's my situation. I am tracking a group of Davises whose trail I first get in SC around the turn of 1800. In 1800-1820 or so they are in Washington, Wilkes and Warren Counties of north Ga, and win land along the way in Monroe Co, GA, the Indian lottery land. They seem to end up in Jefferson County, Florida by the late 1820s. There is a possibility that one of them, James Davis, son of John Davis, came through Thomas county and may be tied in to Brooks County. The major names are Ann Davis and her sister Cyntha or Cynthia, Edmund Davis, Francis Davis, Samuel Davis, Willis Turner Davis (who married Emma Charlotte Rowell in 1852). While all these names turn up on land transactions as witnesses to each other, etc. I cannot make a direct connetion between them. They even swap slaves around, so I know they are related, and are, at one point, dividing an inheritance. The father of one of them died in Ga in the 1830s. But who and where? Any help appreciated.
