Ga Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Brooks/398 Surname: ------------------------- Jerrie, there is a book containing the burials of the Oak Hill cemetery In Quitman (Brooks County) but I am hoping there is a sectional listing of those who are buried there. I think I might need to write the Society there and see what they have. I do not know which people you are looking for but the Ponder name is popular in that area.
Jerrie, I am going to the Library today in Thomas Co. There is a possibility of finding a book on Burials in Brooks Co. If you can e-mail me right back with the names you are looking for. Winnette
Forwarding to the lists I am own that most likely would be interested in this. I hope it is not improper to do so since I feel this is genealogy too. A couple of the cemeteries I have surveyed are on private property and certainly not being taken care of right here in Thomas Co too. Winnette ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jones, Brad" <Bjones@JJG.com> To: <GA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 11:12 AM Subject: [GA-CEM] Georgia Cemetery Laws-Rights of Access Hello Cemetery list subscribers: I am undertaking a project and am looking for some help, on what I think is an important issue regarding the preservation of historic cemeteries in Georgia. You may not be aware that there is no specific law in the state that allows someone the right to access cemeteries on private property. However, it is the position of the Department of Natural Resources that under the state's common law, rights of access are indeed granted. Yet this is vague and can be easily challenged, perhaps even ignored, by the property owner. I know, because I am having a problem like this right now, trying to access an old cemetery where my ancestors are buried. The property owners refuse to allow me access to the graves to see them or to begin maintaining them, mark them properly, etc. I have contacted an attorney to try to resolve the situation, and it could prove costly. I do not want someone else to have to go through what I have. This is primarily a problem in rural areas. There are cases of old cemeteries on timber land and other areas, and there have been cases where the timber companies will not give specific access either--they basically take a "dont ask, dont tell" position if one wishes to access a graveyard. Basically, the issue is becoming very confusing. Who has responsibilty of such cemeteries? Abandoned cemeteries are protected under state law, which requires local government to take responsibility for them. However, once someone has "claimed" an abandoned cemetery to be the burial place of their ancestors, then it's not abandoned anymore, now, is it? This is where the law becomes tricky. Therefore, I have contacted my state legislator about amending the Cemetery Preservation law to include specific direction and language that allows someone with legitamate claim to a family cemetery previously abandoned to be allowed access to maintain it. It would clear up much confusion and allow for people to be able to preserve thier family history without interference. I have gotten verbal support from such groups as the Cobb County Cemetery Preservation Commission, the Georgia Society of Professional Archaeologists, and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. However, I need further support from those interested from a geneological point of view. If anyone knows of a Georgia geneoloical group interested in having such an amendment passed, please let me know. I plan to meet with my legislator in Mid-November so any help or suport will be appreciated. Thank You. If anyone wishes to contact me you can call me at work or at home at 770-901-9731. Ga Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Brooks/397 Surname: Ponder ------------------------- I'm not familiar with a listing but if you find one please post to the list as to where it's located. I have been to Quitman twice to find my grandparents family. I can find the family plot but it has 1 or 2 unmarked slabs and possible some graves that are totally unmarked. The funeral home burned in the 1950's and lost all of their records so we are unable to identify who is buried there.

Posted on: Brooks Co. Ga Queries Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ga/Brooks/392 Surname: Collins, Johnson, Shaw, Lashley, Easters, Mitchell ------------------------- I am looking for links of my family in Adel, Morven, Quitman, Hahira and Thomas County. My ggrandfather was C.B. Collins. He married 3 times. First to my gggrandmother Sallie Easter. They were married in Brooks County in 1909. His brother, Ernest Collins married her sister Carrie Easters. The four of them are buried together at the Old Camp Ground Cemetery in Morven. Sallie died in 1925. He then married Ida Lee Shaw; they had 2 children, 1 died and the others name is James. He then married Clara Lashley; children from this marriage were: Francis, Betty and Jerry, which I believe is a baptist preacher. My grandfather, son of CB or Columbus Bryant was Lewis Andrew Collins born in Adel in 1911. He had one real brother, Frank born in 1914 CB's sister was Zollie Priscilla Collins and she married LM Johnson. Zollie and LM are buried in Gornto Cemetery. Does this sound familiar to anyone??????
Posted on: Brooks Co. Ga Queries Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ga/Brooks/391 Surname: Collins, Johnson, Easters, Shaw, Lashley ------------------------- GORNTO Cemetery I believe it is on 122 East. I can't seem to find the directions that I wrote down. If you look closely you will see a dirt rd. with a road Name sign (green). It says Gornto Cemetery Rd. Take that road and the cemetery is on the left. It is a very small family cemetery. My great great aunt is buried there She was Zollie Prisilla Collins, she married LM Johnson, which was the sheriff for Berlin. They also have a daughter buried there. I'm not sure the relationship with them to the Gorntos, unless LM Johnson's Mother was a Gornto. Zollie Collins' Mother and Father, C.B. Collins and Sallie Easters were married in Brooks County in 1909. Good Luck

Mar 1882 ,, GA In the 1910 Census from Florida I show: George Washington (age 76) and Nancy (age 69) (married 53 years) running a boarding house. George W. was wounded at the Battle of Olustee and on a pension from the Civil War. Andrew J. (age 52) married to Amanda (age 46) for 19 years but showing Andrew had 10 children and Amanda had only 7 with 5 still living for both. With them in Coconut Grove they had: Son - Walker age 27 Son - Eugene age 14 Son - Charles age 11 Daughter - Ruby age 3 Just looking at the age of Walker I would venture to say that Missouri was Andrews first wife. Charles H. Perry (age 41) and Mary (age 27) married 15 years with 3 daughters Isaac M. Perry (age 36) and Roxie B. (age 26) married 8 years with only son Roy George L. Perry (age 47) and Mollie (age 48) married 26 years with 8 of their 9 children still living. William Lafayette Perry (age 21) and Catherine A. (age 17) just married in 1909. These are my grandparents. I show all these persons on the 1900 Census in Coconut Grove, FL. It is interesting to note that under Andrew and Amanda there is a 14-year-old daughter named Anna L. showing a birth of Oct 1885. This must be Annie Lee. I show George W. and Nancy in Sumter County GA on the 1880 Census with Andrew J. not living with them. Andrew and Amanda must have married around 1880-81. The oldest son on the census, Walker , was born somewhere around 1873 so I would guess that Missouri was his mother. I hope I have given you something to use. I would love to receive any info you have on any of these ancestors in the Perry line.
