Janet, I checked the index of "A Survey of Brooks County Cemeteries" of 1999 for the surname of HURST. This is what I found: Columbia Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, page 36 This cemetery is located approximately 12 miles south of Quitman off of the Quitman, GA-Madison, FL highway to Nankin. Turn right onto dirt road at Nankin. The church and cemetery are a short distance to the left. HURST, Infant 03/17/1917 - 05/29/1917 c/o W. H. & Cora W. H. 02/04/1894 - 11/13/1918 NOTE: Many people in south GA and north FL died of the Spanish influenza in 1917 and 1918. My g grandparents William BROWN and Alice M. SPILLER BROWN died four days apart in December 1917 from the influenza. They lived in Madison Co., FL just over the FL/GA state line from Brooks Co., GA. My g grandparents Charles Monroe GRANT and Sara Elizabeth "Sadie" DENNIS GRANT lost two small children to influenza. They are buried at Dixie, Brooks Co., GA. I would suggest that you check out the Thomas County, GA RootsWeb page for your HURST relatives. Some of the HURST given names you listed are shown on the 1850 Federal Census index for Thomas Co., GA. I also found the HURST surname in the index of the History of Thomas County. <http://www.rootsweb.com/~gathomas> I'm sure you'll find the HURST surname in the counties around Brooks Co., GA at <http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/georgia.html> Hope this helps. Luther, I checked my copy of "A Survey of Brooks County Cemeteries" which was published by the Brooks County Museum and Cultural Center, Quitman, GA in 1999. This is what is shown for your Stephen Henry HAMPTON: Page 9: b. August 1835, d. May 3, 1919, h/o Eliz. J. CUMBEST, CSA Soldier 4th Corp. Co. E. 17th Regt. GA. He is buried at Old Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery which is located south of Highway 122, Old Tallokas District. I did not find a listing for Eliz. J. CUMBEST HAMPTON under CUMBEST or HAMPTON. I found in "Brooks County Georgia - Echoes of Its People" the following: Page 17 - INDIGENT SOLDIERS: PENSIONS HAMPTON, S. Homer, I believe you and I have relatives in common. My name is Faye (JONES) Yager and I now live in Alexandria, MN. I was born in Quitman, Brooks Co., GA in July 1944 to Sam Thomas JONES and Virginia Grace GRANT. He was a farmer share cropping land in the Harmony community of Madison Co., FL at that time. Mother was just 20 years old and I was the fourth child born to them. Their 3-year old daughter, Sue Elizabeth had died in January 1944 from burns received in a house fire. Sam Thomas JONES was b. July 15, 1916 in Madison Co., FL to William Irvin JONES and Gillie BROWN. He died January 8, 1983 while living in Quitman, GA with his 3rd wife, Ola Lee (MITCHELL) WILLIAMS. Sam was a farmer, carpenter, produce vendor, and cabinet maker before retirement. Irvin JONES (b. Jan. 9, 1884 in GA d. Oct. 6, 1971 in Quitman) was a woodchopper, sharecropper, and carpenter. He was a long-time "fixture" in front of the courthouse with his friends before his death. He was the son of John Thomas JONES and Jane Elizabeth MANNING. John Thomas JONES, b. May 18, 1855 in GA d. Jan. 14, 1941 in Quitman, GA. He is buried at Hickory Head Cemetery, Brooks Co., GA. He m. Jane Elizabeth MANNING (b. Feb. 14, 1858 in GA d. Feb. 19, 1909) in Brooks Co., GA Jan. 2, 1879. He was a farmer, master carpenter, a blacksmith, and justice of the peace in Empress, GA from 1921 to 1941. My grandparents William Irvin JONES and Gillie BROWN JONES moved to Mr. Tom Jones' Empress home after his death in 1941. Grandma Jones died in 1972. I do not know who John Thomas JONES' parents were, but do know that Jane Elizabeth MANNING was the daughter of William MANNING, CSA and Amanda SIMMS. They also had two sons, William MANNING b. May 1853 and James Gatlin MANNING b. 1861. Amanda SIMMS MANNING was sister to Prudence Jane SIMMS who married Joshua BROWNING. Their son, Asa Floyd BROWNING married Nannie Lou DENNIS who was the daughter of my maternal gg grandparents, Charles Westbrook DENNIS and Martha N. SAXON. Their daughter, Sara Elizabeth "Sadie" DENNIS married Charles Monroe GRANT in Dixie, Brooks Co., GA in Dec. 1897. They are my maternal g grandparents. Their son, Daniel Richmond GRANT, Sr. is my maternal grandfather. He was born in Dixie, GA April 10, 1900. His first wife was Nancy Elizabeth KING who d. in 1938. He m. 2nd, Clara O'NEAL d/o Gilbert Burton O'NEAL and Lilly Pearl RAMBO. While I was visiting my father's sister, Ouida (JONES) HOWARD in Quitman, GA last September '99, we were talking about Walker LEWIS, Jr. whom I had met in 1995 while my cousins Neal and Evans BROWN were visiting with me and aunt Ouida. They are cousins through their father Will BROWN and his sister, Gillie BROWN JONES (my paternal grandmother). I recall that Walker LEWIS, Jr. lived on the Empress highway near the country club. I believe aunt Ouida told me last year that he had recently died. Since I am related to the BROWNING, MANNING, and SIMS/SIMMS families, I must be related to the LEWIS family too. Do you know if the LEWIS family was related to the BAILEY families? You mentioned that you have a picture of Prudence Jane SIMMS BROWNING. I would love to have a copy of that photo. I will be happy to reimburse you for any expenses incurred.
