I am looking for information on the families mentioned below. These Lanes were also in Quitman and Valdosta, Georgia. I am especially interested in the G. E. Lane, aged 5. >From the 1880 Madison County, Florida Census Hamburg Section (This is NW Madison County) Name Color Sex Age Relationship Born Father Mother LANE, Sylvester W M 53 Widower GA GA GA W. S. W M 11 Son GA GA GA G. E. W M 5 Son FL GA GA Elizabeth W F 50 Sister GA GA GA Clara A. W F 18 Cousin GA GA GA Also, listed just before Sylvester is: LANE, J. T. W M 25 FL GA GA H. L. W F 25 Wife FL GA GA E. S. W F 2 Daughter FL FL FL C. F. W F 5/12 Daughter FL FL FL VICKERS, Carolina (as best I can read it) W F 56 Mother GA GA GA (Wondering if she could be mother of the wife??) I believe this is probably the same Sylvester in 1870. >From a printed census of Brooks County, GA in 1870. Nankin is in south Brooks County. LANE, Sylvester Age 40 Henrietta 30 James 16 Willie 2 John 35 Elizabeth 42 I feel the James could be the J. T. Lane listed next to Sylvester in the Madison County, Florida, 1880 census. Could John be a brother to Sylvester? A Sylvester and John LANE are shown in the Civil War unit called the Piscola Rifles, enlisting from Brooks county. A Sylvester LANE (shown on some records as Lam) was shown to have married Nancy REDDING and moved to Texas in the 1850’s. This could possibly have been the same one. The G. E. LANE (called Ed), shown on the 1880 census as age 5, was raised by his Aunt Elizabeth who is also shown on the same census. I have pictures of both. He does not remember his father, nor did he know he had brothers. This is a puzzle, though it is probably explained by his father’s death when he was young. He always tried to get family images better in his mind, but he just couldn’t. He talked of an Old Will LANE in Quitman, but we never knew just who he was. He said he knew, but couldn’t prove, that a Mayor Tom LANE in Tampa was a cousin. My dad tried for years to find info for him, and he did find that he was born in Madison County, Florida. Apparently Madison County records were destroyed by fire. Sorry to post such a long query, but I couldn’t figure how to shorten it. Hope someone is aware of this family. Sydney Cardner (the Sydney is female)
Mary, I checked The Political Graveyard for your WEST line. I found William Stanley WEST (1848-1914) listed there. He is buried at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta, Lowndes Co., GA. You can read his congressional biography if you go to http://politicalgraveyard.com/bio/wells-westb.html I also checked the index of A Survey of Brooks County Cemeteries for your HUNTER and WEST families. I didn't find anything. Scott, you didn't give your g grandfather PEACOCK's given name. I checked the index of "A Survey of Brooks County Cemeteries", "Brooks County Georgia: Echoes of Its People, Vol. I" and Brooks County Georgia: Echoes of Its People, Vol. II" for the PEACOCK surname. There are numerous listings in each book. I just received my copy of Volume II this week from the Brooks County Genealogical Society. Since I'm taking care of my 3-month old grandson for two weeks, I haven't had time to read it yet. It is a wonderful addition to my research library. I'm anxious to "explore" its contents. All of these books are available for use at the Brooks County Library in Quitman, GA. You can still purchase this new book by visiting the Brooks County, GA website. They have an order form you can print, fill out, and mail to them along with $44. Let me know the given name of your g grandfather. I will be happy to see if he is listed in any of the resources I have. GA Korean War MIA/POWs need help ----- Original Message ----- From: "B & C Pierce" <ltlbit@mindspring.com> Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2001 10:23 AM Subject: Fw: GA Korean War MIA/POWs need help I received the following message this a.m. - There are several listed for GA Counties - if any of you know families of these military personnel, please follow the instructions and provide that information ----- Original Message ----- From: Harold Keisling Subject: GA Korean War MIA/POWs need help Dear List Administrator; You will note that DNA is need on several of the service men. That is DNA from a living person who descends from the same blood line. The message below can also be posted along with the request. As a former service member I am doing everything within my power to get the message out. Feel free to modify, abbreviate, or alter this to best suit your needs. Thank you. Sincerely, Harold Keisling, Cookeville TN -----------------message follows--------------------------------- The Army has some unidentified remains of service members from North Korea. Since DNA data was unknown in the 1950s there was no profile on these personnel. The Army can now conduct DNA on the remains, but they have an incomplete database of DNA form close family members with which to compare. There are several on the list for your state and some may be from your county. Please look at the list and see if any from you county are annotated with needing DNA "Yes". If find one, look under DNA and see what relative is acceptable. Then find a relative in your area that meets this criterion and send their name, address or phone number to the following contact at Department of the Army. There is not guarantee that the missing service member from your county will be found, but thru DNA testing the Army can confirm or eliminate him as a name for the remains that they have. This is an important service that we can provide to our fellow citizens. We owe this much to our service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country and in the name of freedom. Let us resolve to get all of these needed DNA for our state submitted. Steps to follow: 1. Look at the state List and find people from your county 2. copy and paste the service member name or jot it down on paper so that you use the same spelling when you go to the DNA database. 3. Go to DNA database and see if they need DNA, if not then the Army has what data they need. If they need DNA then you need to find a good DNA source. 4. Look under DNA on one of the pages and it will tell you what is acceptable. 5. Develop a list of siblings, offsprings etc with addresses/phone number and send them to the e-mail address or call them into the 1-800 number. 6. The Army has its own procedure for following up and getting the DNA samples. PMKOR Data by name search: http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/pmkor/files.htm Your state Data, select ASCII and then open in place: http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/pmkor/statefiles.htm?State=ga&Name=Georgia Korean DB search by name DNA needed: http://www.koreanwar.org/html/korean_war_databases.html Send you data to this address or call the 800 number that is listed on the database.
