Greetings everyone, I am new to the list. I am performing genealogical research for a college project and would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me. My Bowman and Baker ancestors came from Barwick, Brooks County, Georgia. Are there any kind souls who do look-ups in that area? If so, here is a list of items I am searching for (all in Barwick): 1. Marriage of William A. Bowman to Bessie Mae Baker, between 1900 and 1910 2. Births of the following children of William and Bessie (Baker) Bowman: Muriel Mae Bowman, born 5 September 1909 Frances Bowman, born 11 Mar 1914 3. Marriage of Rupert Singletary to Claudia Bowman, between 1920 and 1940 4. Births of the following children of Rupert and Claudia (Bowman) Singletary: Lamar, born circa 1925 Laura, born circa 1927 Lucille, born circa 1930 5. Death of Bessie (Baker) Bowman, sometime between 1900 and 1925 6. Marriage of William A. Bowman to Eula Mae Barker, sometime between 1907 and 1918. I do not require certified copies of this material--e-mailed transcriptions would be ideal! My address is: woodr97@yahoo.com. Any help would be appreciated beyond words. Gratefully, Ryan D. The directions should > read, "South of Highway 122, Old Tallokas District". I will take your word that > the dirt road is Old Bethel Church Road. I didn't see a sign when I was going up and down Hwy 122 Harry, For a little trivia here, if you continue past Bethel Church and Cemetery on the dirt road you will come to an intersection that was and is known as "Chitlin Switch." I have been told that this was a stagecoach route or something like that. Onward to the south is Okapilco but you have to get back on the paved road to get there. In case anyone is interested, the Bethel church is surrounded by video camera. When you approach the church you will see one on the front porch. I do not know if there are any others hidden in the area. There are a lot of interesting graves there, quite a variety. charles t. zeigler
Hi Pat, Thanks for alerting me to the error. I should have caught that one myself since I have been to Old Bethel a few times myself and the one time I tried to find it on my own was quite an adventure. The directions should read, "South of Highway 122, Old Tallokas District". I will take your word that the dirt road is Old Bethel Church Road. I didn't see a sign when I was going up and down Hwy 122. I would estimate the distance from Hwy 122 to the Church to be less than 2 miles. Let me know whose tombstone you are looking for and I might be able to help you. My Aunt Jo Clark Hanna is very familiar with the place and if I recall correctly has a sketch of the layout. Your "fuss" is appreciated. My goal is to get it right not to exercise my ego. Warm regards, Harry Folsom -----Original Message----- From: Roger & Pat Crabtree [mailto:rcrabtree@sysmatrix.net] Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2001 8:00 AM To: miamibig@flash.net Subject: Brooks Co. website Hi Harry, I'm a member of the Brooks Co. mailing list & use your web site frequently. Thanks--you're doing a really good job. I'm so pleased with how active the mailing list is---everyone really tries to help. Last week I was in Brooks Co. doing research & decided to visit Old Bethel Pr. Bapt. Ch. cemetery. The info. on the web site says it is on Hwy 122 east of Pavo. No, it's not. Old Bethel Church Road meets Hwy 122 about 6 miles east of Pavo. Then, you have to drive down Old Bethel Church Road( a dirt road) about 5 miles (I didn't measure it, & I'm a terrible estimator.) I would have never gone there by myself had I known it wasn't on a highway; the area is rather deserted, & I didn't feel safe. (As my mother would say, "A woman alone....") I would have measured the distance for you, but based on the directions, I assumed the cemetery must be just off Hwy 122. The next time I go I'll take someone with me & will measure the distance, but it'll be several months. I live in S.C. I have to go to Old Bethel again because I didn't find the tombstones I was looking for, but that's another story. It's too bad that whoever surveyed the cemetery didn't explain how they determined the rows. Meanwhile, thanks again for your work & for letting me fuss. Pat Crabtree

The names you listed are my family, and all of their graves are marked. Joe and Janie Dickinson were my grandparents. I know that James and Dolly Dickinson, (my great-great grandparents) died in Brooks Co, but I am not sure where to look to find out when they died or where they might be buried. I was hoping that there might be a record somewhere of who was buried where, even if there was not a grave marker. If you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to share them. Once again, thank you. Kindest Regards, Barbara Rozier Courson

I need to find where four grandparents are buried. If you can help me I would appreciate it very much. 1. My grgrgrandfather Camillus{Melus} Thigpen was pastor of Bethel Church [later called Old Bethel Primitive Baptist Church] 1833-35. He was pastor of Bethany Church from 1835 until his death18 January1839. I do not know where Bethany Church is in Brooks County. How happy I would be to know where he is buried! My great grandfather Irvin James Lewis died 26 September 1849 in Brooks County[ it may have been Lowndes at the time] He and his wife Susan Thigpen Lewis were married in Bethlehem Church [probably in Lowndes County] She died 10 August 1900. Bethlehem Church is the only church as far as I know related to them. Do you know where this church is located? I don't know where either one of these great grandparents are buried. There are no family members left who might know these four are buried or where the churches are. I would appreciate any help you can give me. How foolish I was not to ask the proper questions of my Mother while she was alive! By the way, my grandparents Wiley Melus Lewis and Ophelia Folsom Lewis lived on the Tallokas Road north of Quitman. You mentioned that road. Thanks again for any help you can give me. Ernestine --part1_fe.4ee1427.280cb00a_boundary--

Has anyone in Brooks Co. come across listings of Bible records published in FAMILY PUZZLERS, the weekly genealogy magazine edited by Mary Bondurant Warren from 1964 until 1998? I thought that HERITAGE PAPERS went out of business when Mrs. Warren stopped publishing Puzzlers the end of 1998. Not so!! I recently found the new websites for HERITAGE PAPERS as well as for FAMILY PUZZLERS, TNG, the monthly magazine edited by Mrs. Warrens daughter Amy Warren Sanders! Most of the items that Heritage Papers used to advertise in their annual catalog are still available, including back issues of the quarterly magazines GEORGIA GENEALOGIST and CAROLINA GENEALOGIST, lots of historic maps, as well as source materials for Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. Some bound volumes of Family Puzzlers are still available. Mauldin, who were married 8/18/1880. They had three children, Claude Dixon, b. 1/6/1882, Maude Gertrude, b. 1/11/1884 and Eli Colon, b. 1/12/1886. I know that Maude was born in Brooks County, and that Elizabeth was probably born in 1856 and passed away 7/3/1888. Maude Gertrude's 1st husband was Hiram Hilliard and her second husband was John James Johnson (10/20/1871-3/23/1936). Maude had 4 girls and 2 boys with Hiram Hilliard, who died around 1916, Lille Mae, Lillian, Florence, Elizabeth, Hiram Jr. and John Henry. Maude married John James Johnson on 9/22/1917 and had 4 girls, Claudia, Beulah, Hattie and Annie. Maude died in Waycross and I believe she lived there most of her life. We have never met any of our southern family and would love to have any information. You may email me directly at hartmanw@mindspring.com. Thank you. Wendy
Benjamin Johnson and many of his descendants are buried in Providence Methodist Church cemetery between Valdosta and Morven. Probably your best source will be one of the volumes of "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" by Folks Huxford. Many Georgia genealogical libraries have the set or you could contact the Huxford Genealogical Society, Box 595, Homerville Ga., 31634. He was killed in a tragic automobile accident on July 21, 1939. His funeral was in the church in Sandersville on Sunday, July 23. After his death his wife, Dora Sanders Marshall elected to make her home in Quitman, and Rev. Marshall's burial was in Quitman, in the Oak Hill Cemetery - West. Mrs. Marshall is also buried there; she followed him in death on August 5, 1943. My husband is a descendant of Rev. Marshall, and we searching for other descendants of Rev. and Mrs. Marshall. Any information will be appreciated. We live in Florida and I have searched the web for Marshall's who now live in Quitman, but have been unsuccessful to-date. We believe that the fellowhship of the church members, and the local community was sweet to Mrs. Marshall and that's why she decided to make Quitman she home after her husband's death. There is also the possibly that they had children who would have been of marrying age during the time he pastored in Quitman and they could have married members of the commnunity of Quitman. Help!
