Today it still is mostly commercial. City Hall is located at the top of Poplar Street, as is the Catholic and Baptist churches. Currently Poplar Street is going through a transition - many medical offices are moving in as well as new businesses. Several years ago there was a nation-wide contest to redesign historic Poplar Street in Macon and architect Walter Hood from California was chosen. The redesign with new market-type areas as opposed to parking lots is almost complete. I believe that the part of Poplar your ancestor resided in is at the other end of Poplar from City Hall. It would probably be nearer Broadway (also called Martin Luther King Blvd.).
