Sanders Manning was slipping through the river swamp looking for beavers. He saw something shaking the bushes on the riverbanks and thinking it was a beaver fired at the object. It proved to be young Joe Ray who was fishing. The load of buckshot entered his head and neck and he died in three or four hours. Young Manning, the boy who did the shooting, is in the greatest distress on account of the sad accident. Special guests, the Texian Legacy Assn., will re-enact the Nov. 18, 1835, encampment of Ward's Battalion after their first day's march from Macon and the presentation by Joanna Troutman of her banner was a forerunner of the Lone Star Flag of Texas. We're planning horseshoe and checkers tournaments, a Shape Note Singing, a courtroom drama, a pottery exhibit, agricultural demonstrations, old-time games and music, and foods like our great-great-greats would have eaten. We're still accepting applications from vendors of period handcrafts. We would love to find descendants of Joanna Troutman, Ward's Battalion volunteers, and Macon organizers of the volunteers for a registry. Please email me for more information.

All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: kirby heard kirbz@northstate.net September 1, 2004, 12:05 pm Macon Daily Telegraph 5 Oct 1907 Peyton W. Jones Died Yesterday Afternnon He was first building inspector after office had been created, had been an alderman and was well known. The death of Peyton W. Jones, one of the old citizens of Macon, occurred yesterday afternoon at 2 oclock at his residence 1019 Ash street. Mr. Jones had been in ailing health for several months, and while he was frequently seen on the streets, and up to recently, he was far from being a well man. He enlisted in the Eufaula Light Artillery on January 1, 1861, and after a year at Pensacola, Fla., where his command had been ordered, he went into the Western army and remained throughout the war. He served as an Alderman from the Fifth ward, when the city was divided into six political wards, for the years 1896 and 1897. In 1903 he was elected building inspector for the city, being the first to hold that position after its creation. He completed the term and was reelected in December 1905, but on account of failing health resigned the office in the early part of this year. Mr. Jones was at one time one of the most extensive building contractors in the city, and was later associated his sons with him in the business, giving up actual work only when forced to do so. He then sought to find health in the full retirement from business. He was a public spirited citizen, and when in Council his vote and voice was always given to all that tended to build up the city of his adoption. The funeral will occur from the residence, 1019 Ash street, this afternoon at 3 oclock and will be conducted by the Rev. Turner, pastor of the Tattnall Square Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. J.E. Seals, pastor of Centenary M.E. Church. Interment will be in Rose Hill cemetery. Ruthford E. Douglass, officiating. The church, especially about the chancel end, was decorated lavishly with palms and ferns, mingled with which were dozens of small white and red incandescent lights, making a very charming and effective background for the bridal party. The choir railing was banked with smilax and ferns and on the raised dais just back of this the bridesmaids and groomsmen formed a semi-circle during the ceremony facing the bride and groom. The bridesmaids included Miss Hettie Garrett, of Columbus; Miss Marie Adams and Miss Louise White of Macon. The groomsmen were: Messrs. Tom Carson, of Columbus, Jim Clyatt, of Unadilla, Tom Marcy and Marshall Ellis of this city. The two matrons of honor were: Mrs. Henry R. McLean, of Athens, sister of the bride and Mrs. Tom S. Murphey of Barnesville, the grooms sister. The bride who came in with her father, R.A. Scandrett, was preceded by her maid of honor, Miss Mary Scandrett, and they were met at the altar by the groom and his best man, Bob Flournoy, the officiating minister who awaited them, performing the beautiful and impressive ceremony. The bride made a lovely picture in her wedding gown and veil, the filmy folds of which enveloped the slight girlish figure. Her gown which was made with long train, was of white dutchess lace over satin and with pearl trimmings. Her long tulle veil was caught to the coiffure with a half wreath of orange blossoms, and she carried an exquisite bouquet of bride roses showered with Lillies of the Valley. They were driven to the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Scandrett, where before leaving for Florida on their wedding trip, the bride changed her wedding gown for a handsome gray traveling dress, with which she wore hat, gloves and shoes to match. On their return Mr. and Mrs. Saunders will be at home to their friends at 400 Vineville Avenue, the home of the grooms parents, Dr. and Mrs. J.W. Saunders for a few months.
